While most literature about Indian economics examines the country as the global nucleus, what makes author Saurav Jha’s latest book unique is how he breaks down major international powers, and seeks to understand India’s place in such a global scenario. Negotiating The New Normal: How India Must Grow in a Pandemic-Ridden World has been receiving acclaim for its detailed examination of declining Western power, the dissonance between US-China, and India’s ripe potential to prosper after the pandemic. In an interview with My Kolkata, the Presidency University alumnus delved into the process of writing the book, how it is different from his previous work and weighed in on India’s economic evolution. Edited excerpts from the interview…

'Saurav Jha’s new book, Negotiating the New Normal, takes on the intimidating task of helping India make sense of this new world. With central banks, governments and supranational entities at the centre of its narratives, the book offers a deep examination of the forces that animated the global economy between the Global Financial Crisis of 2008 and the pandemic shock of 2020. Closely studying each of the world’s major financial centres during this period – the US, the EU, Japan and China – Jha develops a sobering framework to help contextualise India’s own growth story.'

"I have found that the analysis of so-called 'large affairs does not really lend itself to a siloed approach. No geoeconomic paradigm arises in a geopolitical vacuum. On the other hand, the critical nature of certain national economic interests invariably shapes foreign policy. It is at the intersection of these currents that extant geostrategic trends may be identified," Jha told IANS in an interview of his book, "Negotiating The New Normal - How India Must Grow In A Pandemic-Ridden World" (Hachette)

New Delhi, Nov 5 (IANS) Geo-strategic affairs commentator Saurav Jha likes to think of a book as something that germinates within the writer, nourished by early impressions, then feeding on new data and experiences, but ultimately shaped by a crystallizing worldview. The interaction between geoecono...

Saurav Jha explains why US Dollar Supremacy will endure in the medium-term and why the Chinese RMB simply cannot match up.

When seen together with China's likely inability to overcome network effects that favour the incumbent dollar, and specific reasons why the euro has flattered to deceive, a case for persistent dollar supremacy in the medium term can be made.
