The Calcutta Tramways is facing an uncertain future. It is imperative that we the common people - the real stakeholders in this system - come together and ensure its survival for future generations. We don't have a lot of time left ... spread the word ... let's all come together.

Hooghly Imambara ( হুগলি ইমামবাড়া )

Hooghly Imambara is a Shia Muslim congregation hall and mosque in Hooghly, West Bengal, India. The construction of the building was started by "Muhammad Mohsin" ( Haji Muhammad Mohsin (হাজী মুহম্মদ মহসীন; c. 1733 – 29 November 1812) was a prominent Bengali Muslim philanthropist. His most notable contribution was to establish the Hooghly Mohsin College and the Hooghly Imambara. )in 1841 and completed in 1861. The building is a two storied structure, with a tall clock tower over the entrance gate. The mosque has intricate designs and texts from Quran engraved on the wall. The interior of the mosque is decorated with marbles, candles and hanging lanterns.

Hooghly Imambara is famous for its vaunted clock. It is at the middle of the twin towers constructed on the doorway of the main entrance. Each tower, having a height of approximately 150 ft., takes 152 steps to reach its top. The clock has two dials with three bells having weight 80 mds, 40 mds and 30 mds. Smaller bells ring at an interval of 15 minutes and bigger bell rings to signify one hour. The clock requires two people to wind it for half an hour of each week, with a key weighing 20 kg. It was bought for Rs. 11,721 (in 1852) by Syed Keramat Ali from the manufacturer: M/s Black & Hurray Co., Big Ben, London.

Chandannagar is a city in the Hooghly district in the Indian state of West Bengal.Located on the western bank of Hooghly River, the town was a former French colony of India. The city has a unique culture due to the mixed Bengali culture and French culture, different from other cities in West Bengal. Indo-French architecture is seen in the colonial bungalows, most of which are in a dilapidated state. The town still retains some of its Francophone culture.

The Chandannagar strand is the most important and popular pathway in all of Chandan Nagar. The strand is built along the Ganges river, lined with trees and lights.

The most important feature of the strand is that in addition to the stunning riverside view, the strand has numerous monuments and historical spots along the region, making it a complete days worth of visit. The area also has a lot of restaurants to make sure you don't go hungry. The Chandannagar strand is celebrated as the most decorated strip of Ganges, in all it's course right from the Himalayas.

Gita Jayanti is observed on the Shukla Ekadashi of Margashirsha month. This year, the auspicious day will be observed on December 25. Notably, December 25 is also the day when the whole world will celebrate Christmas.

What is the puja vidhi for Gita Jayanti?

On this auspicious day, devotees wake up before sunrise and take a bath. Wearing clean and new clothes is considered auspicious on this day and devotees also sprinkle gangajal in their house to spread positive vibes.

A wooden chowki, covered with red and yellow clothes, is placed by the devotees in their puja room and status of Lord Krishna is placed on it. After this, the devotees light an oil lamp and offer kumkum, Haldi and Chandan to Lord Krishna. Bhagavad Gita is also placed near Lord Krishna's status during the puja and aarti is conducted to seek his blessings.

Bandel church During Christmas 😍

Facts about Bandel church :

The Bandel Church is one of the oldest Christian churches in West Bengal, India. It stands as a memorial to the Portuguese settlement in Bengal. Built around 1660, it is dedicated to Nossa Senhora do Rosário, Our Lady of the Rosary. It is one of the most prominent historical churches in West Bengal.

In 1579, the Portuguese built a port on the banks of the Hooghly, as well as a fort, and enlisted the services of a band of Augustinian Friars, then the largest religious body in Goa. The following year, Captain Pedro Tavares obtained the emperor's full permission to preach the Catholic faith publicly, and erect churches. Thus the Bandel Church came to be constructed in 1599.

This first church was burnt down during the sacking of Hooghly by the Moors in 1632. A newer church, constructed by Gomez de Soto (also spelt John Comes de Soto), was built over the ruin in 1660.

The Dakshineswar Kali Temple was founded around the middle of the 19th century by Rani Rashmoni. Rani Rashmoni was a Mahishya by caste and was well known for her philanthropic activities. In the year 1847, Rashmoni prepared to go upon a long pilgrimage to the sacred Hindu city of Kashi to express her devotions to the Divine Mother. Rani was to travel in twenty-four boats, carrying relatives, servants, and supplies. According to traditional accounts, the night before the pilgrimage began, Rashmoni had a vision of the Divine Mother in the form of the goddess Kali in a dream and reportedly said,

"There is no need to go to Banaras. Install my statue in a beautiful temple on the banks of the Ganges river and arrange for my worship there. Then I shall manifest myself in the image and accept worship at that place."

Profoundly affected by the dream, Rani immediately looked for and purchased a 30,000-acre plot in the village of Dakhineswar. The large temple complex was built between 1847 and 1855. The 20-acre (81,000 m2) plot was bought from an Englishman, Jake Hastie, and was then popularly known as Saheban Bagicha.

The name of the idol of Kali worshiped in the temple is Bhavatarini.

Ramakrishna came to the temple in 1855, as an assistant to his elder brother, Ramkumar, the head priest, a job he took over the next year, after Ramkumar's death.
