Phonautograph. The first device that could record actual sounds as they passed through the air (but could not play them back—the purpose was only visual study) was the phonautograph, patented in 1857 by Parisian inventor Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville.
The initial invention made a recording of sound waves on a glass plate, but it was not able to play back the sounds. The purpose of Edouard-Leon Scott's invention was to evaluate acoustics rather than to play back sounds and music.

Phantom of the Opera NY • Wireless Microphone system
August 1987 • This is the original 21 channel EM-1036 receiver system sitting in the technical department at Sennheiser CT. at there new location from NYC. It consisted of 6 channels of 950Mhz UHF & 15 VHF. It was accompanied by SK2012 Transmitters & MKE2 Red Dot Lavaliere microphones .

This system is one of the earliest to incorporate the (Microport Display) to monitor The RF strength & Audio all to be viewed on an Amiga 1000 computer screen. Headphone monitoring was also achieved via a click of the mouse.
To add more fun to this, the computer screen and headphone audio was broadcast via analog TV channel to be used with a Sony Watchman portable handheld TV to listen and view the wireless performance while being mobile in the theater....The TV broadcast portion was a prototype and was short lived
