The Indian Health Ministry is concerned about a rise in Covid-19 cases, especially in the southern states. The first case of a new Covid variant, JN.1, was reported in Kerala. Currently, there are 260 new infections, with most cases in Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Odisha.
The Health Secretary, Sudhansh Pant, emphasized the need for continued efforts to control the virus. States were urged to take public health measures, monitor and report cases, conduct sufficient testing, and send samples for sequencing. Mock drills are being conducted to assess preparedness. After four deaths in Kerala, Karnataka is advising high-risk individuals to wear masks, increasing testing, and enhancing surveillance in border districts. The Health Minister assured the public about the measures in place and the availability of necessary resources in case of an emergency.

Iran has decided to allow citizens of India and 32 other countries to visit without needing a visa. The goal is to attract more tourists from around the world. The Iranian minister of Cultural Heritage, Tourism, and Handicrafts, Ezzatollah Zarghami, explained that this move is meant to counter negative perceptions about Iran and promote global interaction. The list of countries includes Russia, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Japan, and others. Iran has already removed visa requirements for several other countries earlier. The decision comes as Iran seeks to increase tourism, with a 48.5% rise in tourists during the first eight months of the current year. The minister also mentioned that the Ministry proposed visa-free travel for 60 countries, but it was not entirely approved. Additionally, Iranian citizens will now be able to travel to Saudi Arabia for Umrah through regular flights, starting December 19, improving relations between the two countries.
