“Digital Arrest Scams”

Modus Operandi:

Digital arrest scams are a growing cybercrime where fraudsters impersonate law enforcement officials, customs officers, or judges to extort money.

Victims are contacted via phone, email, or video calls and accused of serious crimes like money laundering, tax evasion, or illegal transactions.

Scammers create panic by threatening immediate arrest or legal action unless payments are made quickly, often through untraceable methods such as cryptocurrency, wire transfers, or gift cards.

These scams leverage fake documents and impersonations to appear credible.

• In one case, scammers extorted ₹7 crores from a businessman by falsely implicating him in a money-laundering investigation 

• Fraudsters in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka created shell companies to launder cybercrime proceeds, converting them into cryptocurrency for transfer abroad.

To protect against such scams:
1. Verify Credentials: Always confirm the identity of anyone claiming to represent law enforcement by contacting official agencies directly.

2. Stay Calm: Do not act impulsively or under pressure; take time to investigate any accusations.

3. Avoid Sharing Personal Data: Do not disclose sensitive information over unsolicited calls or messages.

4. Watch for Payment Demands: Genuine law enforcement will never ask for payment through untraceable methods.

5. Report Incidents: Immediately report suspicious activities to the National Cyber Crime Helpline (1930) or at cybercrime.gov.in.
