Thusharagiri Waterfalls
Caressed in the folds of the Western Ghats is the picturesque Thusharagiri Waterfalls. Lying 50 km from Kozhikode, the Thusharagiri Waterfalls comprises Erattumukku, MazhavilChattom, and Thumbithullum Para which can be reached through trekking. Thusharagiri or 'mist-capped peaks' gets its name from the beautiful silvery crown formed at the mountain top due to the waterfalls. The nature here will transport to a different dimension where time itself comes to a standstill.

Having a dip in the cool water here is highly recommended as well, to revive one’s body and mind. The atmosphere on the way to waterfalls is filled with the aroma of various plantations that are on every traveller’s wish list like arecanut, pepper, ginger and spices.

Mist-capped peaks, ebullient streams, boisterous waterfalls, dramatic backdrops of lush woods and plantations makes it is a wonderful destination to enjoy nature at its finest.

The presence Muniyaras has made Marayoor a place of interest for archaeologists across the world and they are drawn in good numbers to this place every year. Located in the jungles and hillsides of Marayoor, this stone chambers were once buried under the ground but years of heavy rain washed away the soil and these Muniyaras became visible, as they are now. As many as 2,500 Muniyaras can now be seen in the entire region comprising Kanthalloor, Marayoor, and Chinnar.

Kakkadampoyil is situated in Chaliyar Panchayat in Malappuram District near Nilambur .This hilltop village is one of the coolest tourist destinations in Malabar region. It is about 15 km from Koodaranhi, 19 km from Thiruvambady and 24 km from Nilambur. Calicut city is about 50 km from here. There are many indigenous tribal groups in this area. It is set high on the Western Ghats, with altitudes ranging from 700 ft to 2100 ft. Kozhippara waterfalls are situated nearby here. KSRTC Buses are running services from Calicut and have few buses from Thiruvambady and Nilambur towns. There is also a continuous Jeep service from Koodaranhi town to Kakkadampoyil.

Pookkod Lake | Kerala Tourism | Exploring Wayanad

The beautiful freshwater lake in Wayanad, Pookode Lake lays 15 kilometre away from Kalpetta. Nestled between evergreen forest and Western Ghats, the lake is spread over 13 acre and is 40 m deep. This is one of the most preferred tourist destinations in Wayanad.

While reaching at this gorgeous lake, you will be experiencing a calm and peaceful environment around. The lake is surrounded by forest and you will see green and green all around, making this place an ideal location for photographers and nature lovers. One of the main tributary of Kabini River, the Panamaram rivulet originates from here.

The perennial freshwater lake has the shape of an Indian map. You can sight blue lotus and numerous fresh water fishes. Blue water lilies also can be seen scattered here and there in the water. The sight of wild animals and birds in the surrounding forest of the lake is another attraction of this destination. Plenty of monkeys are also seen here. Pethia Pookodensis is a species of cyprind fish, which is said to be found here only.

There are boating facilities for the tourist in the Pookode Lake. Pedal boats are available. Boating in the lake, viewing the stunning beauty of the lake is a unique experience. You can also make a visit to the nearby freshwater aquarium, children's park and shopping centre exclusively for handiwork and spices. The shopping centres are owned by District Tourism Promotion Council. You can get plenty of things made up of bamboo and coconut husk at this shopping centre.

A visit to this lake at the time of dawn or dusk is always recommended. The lake is maintained by the South Wayanad forest division. There are frequent bus services to this place. The timing is from 9 am to 5 pm.

Near to the famous hill station Munnar in Kerala is a lesser known destination called Meesappulimala - a destination for the highly adventurous. The second highest peak in the Western Ghats, here you can have a memorable trekking experience with clouds in company. This mesmerizing paradise of nature is slowly getting popular among ardent trekkers.

Travel a distance of 24 km from Munnar via Mattupetty through Aruvikkad estate and you will reach the base camp of Meesappulimala. The journey to the base camp is difficult, yet exciting. En route you can see the Pandava cave. The villagers believe that the Pandavas, the heroes of the Indian epic Mahabharata, stayed in this cave during their twelve years of exile in the forest. This beautiful cave also shelters countless small and chirpy birds.

The Kerala Forest Development Corporation (KFDC) will arrange all the facilities for trekking and camping. You will be accompanied by an expert guide provided by the KFDC. 4 km from the base camp is the Rhodo Valley, the last point accessible by any four wheelers. Tents are available at Rhodo Valley for those who want to enjoy a stay at this beautiful place. The walk way to the Rhodo Valley is bedecked with pine trees. The check dam here provides crystal clear ice-cold water for the weary travellers. Nature is clad in her best attire here, which will ease the weariness of the physically demanding climb. The crisscrossing streams make the trip all the more interesting.

Keep your eyes and ears open, if you are lucky you will even get a chance to come across elephants, gaur and Nilgiri tahrs, that too, in their natural habitat. If you start early in the morning, you will reach the top of the peak by noon, where you will be at an altitude of 8,661 feet from the sea level. From the top you will get a panoramic view of Anamudi, the highest peak in the Western Ghats the Mattupetty and Anayirangal reservoirs, and parts of Tamil Nadu. You can also relish the spectacular view of the surrounding waterfalls including the gorgeous Kurinji waterfall. At this height you can even have a tête-à-tête with the drifting clouds. Surely, Meesappulimala would be an experience that will linger on your mind forever.

Munnar is well connected to all major cities in south India. From Munnar you can take a jeep to the base camp, via Aruvikkad estate.

We have visited the island several times to watch sunset and when its not raining, watching the sunset is just awesome. You will get good fresh tapped toddy and traditional Kerala food like Appam, puttu, Karimeen roast, crab roast, shrimp fry, chicken, duck, pork dishes and though the side dishes are bit spicy, it is really tasty. Visiting Kakkathuruthu is a must for nature lovers and bird watchers too.

Amrithamedu, popularly nicknamed as Kurisumala (Hill of the Cross), is a popular pilgrim centre as well as a trekker's paradise. During Easter, pilgrims climb the 'Stations of the Cross', which would require a pilgrim to cover 14 points, with each point having a cross,symbolising various phases of Jesus Christ's last journey.

One can see tea estates in the distance and the rolling Kokkad Hills on the trek. The higher you trek, the more you are entranced by the beauty on display. Once the climb reaches the ninth cross, one would step on to a plateau and the mist that engulfs you at this place is quite an experience. This is Amrithamedu, the highest point in Kuttikkanam region in Idukki district.
