Andrew McAuley was an Australian adventurer known for his solo kayak expeditions, including his attempt to paddle from Tasmania to New Zealand in 2007. Tragically, he disappeared during this attempt, and his kayak was found empty, sparking a large-scale search operation. His courage and determination in pursuing his passion for adventure left a lasting legacy.

Andrew McAuley was not just a sea kayaker, but also an accomplished mountaineer. He climbed many peaks in Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan, and Patagonia. His preference for new routes and exploratory climbs showcased his adventurous spirit.

Before his fateful journey across the Tasman Sea, McAuley had already made a name for himself in the world of sea kayaking. In 2003, he became the first person to kayak a direct, non-stop crossing of the Bass Strait, a treacherous stretch of sea between mainland Australia and the island of Tasmania. His 136-mile trip took 35 hours to complete. Another notable journey was an almost 330-mile trip across the Gulf of Carpentaria, located in Northern Australia. This week-long journey required him to sleep in his kayak overnight.

McAuley’s kayak was specially designed for his Tasman Sea crossing. The sleeping arrangements at sea involved deploying a drift anchor, squeezing his body down into the kayak, and sealing the hatch with a bulbous fibreglass capsule. This capsule, dubbed “Casper”, was fitted with an air-only ventilator and had self-righting capabilities, allowing McAuley to ride out severe storm conditions. However, when the capsule was pivoted to its stowing position behind the cockpit, it made a kayak roll impossible due to being filled with water, like a bucket. Therefore, whenever he capsized, he had to swim out of the kayak, push it upright, and perform full self-rescue.

Frank Lucas, the African-American drug lord who ruled Harlem in the 1970s, was so discreet that the police didn't know who he was in 1971 when he decided to wear a $100,000 full-length chinchilla coat — to a Muhammad Ali boxing match.

He later wrote that this was a “massive mistake.

Apparently, Lucas’s coat caught the eye of law enforcement — who were surprised that he had better seats than Diana Ross and Frank Sinatra.

As Lucas put it: “I left that fight a marked man.”

The reconstructed face of 'Ava', a Bronze Age woman who lived in present-day Scotland, around 3700 years ago...

The woman's bones, including a skull and teeth, were discovered at Achavanich in Caithness in 1987. Known as "Ava", an abbreviation of Achavanich, she is the subject of a long-term research project managed by archaeologist Maya Hoole.

Forensic artist Hew Morrison, a graduate of University of Dundee, created the reconstruction, using specialist software.

Ava's remains, along with other artefacts found with her, are held in the care of Caithness Horizons museum in Thurso. Unusually, the Bronze Age woman was buried in a pit dug into solid rock and her skull is an abnormal shape which some suggest was the result of deliberate binding.

It is believed Ava was part of a much wider European group known as the Beaker people. Short and round skull shapes were common amongst this group, but Ms Hoole said the Achavanich specimen is exaggerated and of an abnormal, uneven shape.

Mr Morrison, a graduate of Dundee's Forensic Art MSc programme, specialises in creating facial reconstructions. He used an anthropological formula to calculate the shape of Ava's missing lower jaw, and also the depth of her skin. Mr Morrison also used a chart of modern average tissue depths for reference.

A specialist examination at the time of the discovery in the 1980s suggested that the skeletal remains were that of a young Caucasian woman aged 18-22. He said: "The size of the lips can be determined by measuring the enamel of the teeth and the width of the mouth from the position of the teeth."

Mr Morrison created the reconstruction by rebuilding the layers of muscle and tissue over the face. He drew on a large database of high resolution images of faces to recreate the facial features. The individual features were then adjusted to fit with the anatomy of the skull based on the underlying facial muscles. The features were then "morphed together", using computer software to create reconstructed face.

In 1989, an unlikely bond was formed in Costa Rica when Gilberto "Chito" Shedden, a local fisherman, stumbled upon a dying crocodile on the banks of the Reventazón River.

The crocodile, who Shedden named Pocho, had been shot in the head by a cattle farmer. Chito took Pocho home and nursed him back to health, feeding him of chicken and fish.

Chito believed that, beyond food, "the crocodile needed my love to regain the will to live". He gave Pocho kisses and hugs, talked to him, petted him, and even slept with him. When Pocho's health improved, Chito released him into a nearby river. Pocho refused to return to the wild and chose to stay with Chito.

For over 20 years, Chito and Pocho swam together in the river outside Chito's home. They played together, with Chito hugging & kissing the 16-foot-long crocodile. Pocho would even respond when Chito called his name.

Their unique friendship caught the attention of people around the world. They performed a weekly act on Sunday afternoons in an artificial lake at Finca Las Tilapias in Siquirres, Costa Rica. Pocho died of natural causes in 2011.

Before and after of Texas college student Jacqueline Durand, who was viciously mauled by 2 dogs she was supposed to dog sit. The dogs tore off and ate both of her ears, her nose, her lips, and most of her face below her eyes. She had over 800 bites, resulting in permanent disfigurement.

A 22-year-old UT Dallas student working as a dog sitter remains hospitalized after she was attacked by multiple dogs, a lawsuit alleges.

According to attorney Chip Brooker of Dallas' Brooker Law, Coppell resident Jaqueline Durand was mauled by two dogs and left "permanently and catastrophically disfigured."

Brooker, who represents Durand, said Dr. Justin Bishop and his wife Ashley hired Durand last month to care for the couple's animals while they were out of town.

Durand went to the couple's home in Coppell two days before Christmas and one day before her 22nd birthday.

When she opened the door to the Bishop's home, their mixed-breed German Shepherd and mixed-breed pit bull immediately attacked her, the lawsuit alleged.

She suffered multiple life-threatening injuries, including the loss of both ears, nose, lips, and most of her face, in addition to severe puncture wounds over her entire body.

According to the lawsuit, Durand has undergone several reconstructive surgeries and will require many more. She remains hospitalized locally.

Brooker filed a lawsuit in Dallas County on Tuesday.

The dogs were captured and placed in the care of the City of Coppell before a municipal judge decided earlier this month that both animals should be euthanized, the lawsuit alleged.

Brooker said he and his team have appealed the judge's order to give them time to inspect and examine the dogs to confirm their dangerous tendencies.

In 2014, 24-year-old Daniela Liverani from Edinburgh had been having frequent nosebleeds for weeks.

She thought the nosebleeds were from a burst blood vessel caused by a motorcycle she had been involved in.

But a couple of days later, whilst taking a shower, she began to feel something in her nose move.

And as she got out of the shower to look in the mirror, she could see something sticking out of her nostril.

After seeing this, she rushed to the hospital, where doctors informed her that a 3-inch leech had been living inside her nostril, which they promptly removed.

A former airline captain named Philip Marshall wrote a book on 9/11 which highlighted various inconsistencies in the official story. Weeks after the book was released, Philip was found dead with 2 gunshot wounds, along with his 2 teenage kids and dog in his California home. According to a former NSA officer Wayne Madsen, this was "100% certain" a black ops hit, and the alleged murder-suicide is transparently absurd.

Simone Segouin, mostly known by her codename, Nicole Minet, was only 18-years-old when the Germans invaded. Her first act of rebellion was to steal a bicycle from a German military administration, and to slice the tires of all of the other bikes and motorcycles so they couldn't pursue her. She found a pocket of the Resistance and joined the fight, using the stolen bike to deliver messages between Resistance groups.

She was an extremely fast learner and quickly became an expert at tactics and explosives. She led teams of Resistance fighters to capture German troops, set traps, and sabotage German equipment. As the war dragged on, her deeds escalated to derailing German trains, blocking roads, blowing up bridges and helping to create a German-free path to help the Allied forces retake France from the inside. She was never caught.

Segouin was present at the liberation of Chartres on August 23, 1944, and then the liberation of Paris two days later. She was promoted to lieutenant and awarded several medals, including the Croix de Guerre. After the war, she studied medicine and became a pediatric nurse. She passed away at the age of 97 in 2023.

In 1948, a man wore 30-pound, three-toed lead shoes and stomped around a Florida beach during the night. The footprints lead people to believe that a 15-foot-tall penguin was roaming their lands. He kept up the prank for 10 years, visiting various beaches. The hoax wasn't revealed until 40 years later.

The man who did it was Tony Signorini, sporting 30-pound lead shoes and marched along a Florida beach under the cover of night.

This elaborate prank managed to deceive numerous people, resulting in reports of sightings of a mysterious creature and sparking speculation about the presence of a colossal penguin wandering the Florida shoreline. Law enforcement and even British biologist Ivan Terence Sanderson conducted investigations into the strange tracks, with Sanderson initially leaning toward the belief in a 15-foot-tall giant penguin.

However, in 1988, after keeping his secret for 40 years, Signorini finally unveiled the truth behind the elaborate hoax. He revealed to a reporter a pair of iron feet with three toes, laying bare the fact that there never was a giant penguin. The entire episode had been a prank orchestrated by Signorini himself.

1} This is Oxana Malaya and she was neglected by her alcoholic parents, so between the ages of 3 and 8, she took refuge in a shed inhabited by wild dogs behind her house.

When she was rescued at age 8, her behaviour mimicked that of a wild dog. She growled, walked on all fours, sniffed her food before eating, couldn’t talk and it is said that her bark was indistinguishable from that of a real dog.

She was transferred to a hospital for mentally disabled patients and after years of specialised therapy she was taught how to subdue her dog like behaviours and act like a human.

She now works at a farm, but remains somewhat intellectually impaired.

2} Dina Sanichar was a feral boy. A group of hunters discovered him among wolves in a cave in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, India in February 1867, at the age of around six.

The hunters decided to take the child away, smoking the pack out of the cave and killing the mother wolf in the process.

He was sent to the Secundra orphanage at Agra where he lived among other humans for over twenty years and was given the name, Dina Sanichar.

The boy continued to walk on all fours while eating only raw meat. He only communicated in wolf-like grunts and howls, and never learned a human language.

He died in 1895.

3} Nicknamed the "Russian Bird Boy," Vanya Yudin was kept isolated by his mother in a room surrounded by dozens of birds in cages. When he was rescued in 2008 at the age of 7, he could only communicate by chirping and flapping his arms.

In 1928, nine-year-old Walter Collins disappeared in Los Angeles. Then, five months after Walter's disappearance, a boy claiming to be Walter was found in DeKalb, Illinois.

However, after being reunited with her ‘son’ Christine Collins was convinced this was a different boy and was not her son.

Bizarrely, the officer in charge, Captain J. J. Jones, convinced her to "try the boy out" by taking him home.

Three weeks later, she returned to the cops, reiterating that he was not her son.

Despite having dental records and support from friends to substantiate her claim, Collins mentioned that Jones accused her of being an unfit mother and subjecting the police to ridicule, ultimately resulting in her commitment.

Jones then had Collins committed to the psychiatric ward at Los Angeles County Hospital.

The boy who originally claimed to be her son admitted to Jones that he was 12-year-old Arthur Hutchens, Jr., a runaway from Iowa.

Hutchens was apprehended by police in Illinois. Initially denying being Walter Collins, he later changed his response to affirm that he was.

His motivation for assuming Collins' identity was driven by a desire to reach Hollywood and meet his favorite actor.

Released ten days later, Collins filed a lawsuit against the Los Angeles Police Department.

She succeeded in her legal action against Jones and was granted $10,800 (equivalent to $190,000 in 2022), a sum that Jones never fulfilled.

In 1929, Gordon Stewart Northcott was convicted of abducting, molesting, and murdering three young boys in the infamous Wineville Chicken Coop murders.

His mother, Sarah Louise Northcott, admitted in late 1928 to her involvement in the murder of Walter Collins, acknowledging him as one of her son's victims.

This incident is from the resthouse adjacent to the Kombaru sanctuary in Karnataka.
A leopard was chasing the dog. The dog entered the toilet through a window. The toilet was closed from the outside.
The leopard entered behind the dog, and both got stuck in the toilet. When the dog saw the leopard, he panicked and quietly sat in one corner. He didn't even dare to bark.
Even though the leopard was hungry and was chasing the dog, he did not eat the dog. He could have had dinner by tearing off the dog in one leap.
But the two animals were together in different corners for almost twelve hours. During these twelve hours, the leopard was also quiet.
The forest department zeroed in on the leopard and captured him using a tranquilliser dart.
Now the question is, why didn't the hungry leopard tear off the dog when it was easily possible??
The wildlife researchers responded to this question: According to them, wild animals are very sensitive to their freedom. As soon as they realize their liberty has been taken away, they can feel deep sorrow, so much so that they can forget their hunger.
Their natural motivation to feed the stomach begins to fade away.
Freedom and happiness are connected . Freedom to think, act and live in a way that we wish.

In 2018, Greg Manteufel was at a birthday party where he played with many dogs. A few days later, he experienced a fever and weakness in his limbs so he went to the doctor’s office.

His condition rapidly deteriorated and doctors discovered Manteufel had contracted a blood infection caused by capnocytophaga, a bacteria found in the mouths of dogs.

His situation was so severe that doctors told him his blood platelet count was so low he only had three hours to live.

Typically the infection caused fevers, diarrhea, headaches and vomiting. But in more extreme cases it can lead to severe sepsis, fatal septic shock, and gangrene of the extremities.

Manteufel had to undergo numerous amputations to save his life, which left him without his forearms, legs and parts of his nose. But thankfully, he survived the infection.

Manteufel’s journey to recovery was not an easy one. After the amputations, he had to learn to walk again using prosthetic legs. He also had to adapt to life without his hands, learning new ways to perform everyday tasks. His resilience and determination were truly remarkable. He even expressed his continued love for dogs, showing an incredible spirit of forgiveness.

The bacteria that caused Manteufel’s condition, Capnocytophaga canimorsus, is commonly found in the saliva of dogs and cats. While it rarely causes infections in humans, when it does, the consequences can be severe. In Manteufel’s case, the infection led to sepsis, a potentially life-threatening condition caused by the body’s response to an infection.

Manteufel’s case was particularly severe, but it also brought attention to the potential dangers of Capnocytophaga canimorsus. It highlighted the importance of seeking immediate medical attention if symptoms such as fever, vomiting, and diarrhea occur after a dog bite or close contact with a dog.

In June 2012, 16-year-old Yasser Lopez and his friends went spear fishing at a Miami lake to way to celebrate the last day of school.

One of his friends was loading the spear gun when it accidentally deployed, hitting Yaseer in the head. Yasser was airlifted to Ryder Trauma Center with three feet of the spear protruding from his forehead.

The spear entered Yasser’s head two inches above the right eye and came out at the vertex at the back of his skull.

A rebar cutter, provided by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, and vise-gripes (locking pliers) were used to stabilize the spear in the patient’s head.

Eighteen inches of the protruding spear was removed on the outside of his forehead to allow doctors to do a complete radiographic evaluation of the patient. Luckily, the spear didn’t hit any vessels in his brain.

Yasser was then rushed to the operating room where doctors were able to successfully remove the spear from his skull and brain. The surgery lasted approximately three hours.

Yasser underwent physical, occupational and speech therapy at Jackson Rehabilitation Hospital for two months.

He eventually made a full recovery and went to college.

In 2006, a woman was found in her London apartment, as a skeleton, after 3 years of being dead - with the tv still running.

Joyce Carol Vincent's story is a touching narrative of urban isolation, compounded by modern financial mechanisms that obscured her absence. Born on October 19, 1965, in London's Hammersmith district to Grenadian parents, Vincent was the youngest of five sisters. Her early loss of her mother at age 11 marked a significant emotional event in her life. Her career took her from a promising start in the corporate world, including a notable tenure at Ernst & Young, to a drastic shift where she found herself in a domestic abuse shelter, indicative of her personal struggles.

Vincent's professional life, which once flourished in the bustling financial districts of London, saw a downward spiral leading to her resignation from Ernst & Young in March 2001. This period marked the beginning of her withdrawal from social and professional circles, culminating in her move to a bedsit in North London. Her life in isolation was marked by her transition into a state where she was estranged from her family and distanced from her friends, culminating in her death around December 2003 at the age of 38

The discovery of her body in January 2006, in a state of advanced decomposition, highlighted the profound solitude that characterized her final years.

Her body was in such an advanced state of decomposition that the cause of death could not be conclusively determined. Speculations include an asthma attack or complications from a recent peptic ulcer, both conditions she was known to have suffered from

The mechanism of automatic bill payments played a critical role in this tragedy. Vincent had set up her rent and utility bills to be paid automatically from her bank account. This system kept her utilities running and her rent paid for a significant period after her death, delaying the discovery of her passing. The Metropolitan Housing Trust, which owned her flat, did not realize the arrears until over £2,400 had accumulated, prompting an investigation that led to the grim discovery. The continuous operation of her television and heating, due to debt forgiveness

Majestic lenticular cloud captured over Mt. Fuji on January 28, 2024.

A lenticular cloud is a lens-shaped cloud formation that typically appears near mountain ranges or other geographical features that disrupt the flow of air. These clouds are stationary and form at high altitudes where moist air is forced to flow over obstacles, causing it to cool and condense into a distinctive lens or saucer-shaped cloud.

In 1993, a harrowing incident unfolded involving 24-year-old South African Sipho William Mdletshe and his fiancée. They were in a devastating car accident, with his fiancée surviving while Mdletshe sustained injuries so severe that the first responders on the scene believed him to be fatally wounded. Consequently, he was promptly transported to the morgue.

For 48 hours, Mdletshe endured confinement within a cold metal cabinet at the morgue. Against all odds, he miraculously regained consciousness, likely prompting him to fear the worst.

The young man began desperately crying for help and pounding on the enclosure. Eventually, mortuary workers rescued him, and he was reunited with his fiancée, who was understandably shocked to see him alive once more.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, Stanley Praimnath was at work on the 81st floor of the World Trade Center’s South Tower when he witnessed an American Airlines jet heading directly toward his building.

In a split-second decision, he prayed and took cover under his desk just as the plane struck the tower above his office level.

The collision tore a hole in the wall behind him and sucked out almost everything in his office, leaving only his desk, which providentially protected him from the ensuing fire and debris.

Trapped amidst the wreckage, Stanley’s pleas for help were heard by Brian Clark, another survivor, who bravely came to his aid.

Together, they navigated the stairs and managed to flee the building mere minutes before it collapsed. Stanley attributes his miraculous survival to divine intervention and sees Brian as a lifelong friend.

Following this life-changing experience, Stanley turned to pastoral work and motivational speaking, maintaining a deep friendship with Brian.

In October 1983, Tami Oldham Ashcraft and Richard Sharp, her future husband, began a lengthy 4,000-mile sailing trip from Tahiti to San Diego.

Barely three weeks into their voyage, they faced Hurricane Raymond, a formidable category 4 storm that capsized their boat, knocking Ashcraft unconscious.

After 27 hours, Ashcraft awoke to find herself alone, with Sharp nowhere to be found, adrift in the immense Pacific Ocean.

Relying solely on a sextant and a watch for guidance, Ashcraft courageously navigated for 41 days until she miraculously made landfall in Hawaii.

A movie followed the watery tale of Ashcraft and the sea titled Adrift. Starring Shailene Woodley as Tami Oldman and Sam Claflin as her husband Richard Sharp
