Me: How much is a customer really worth to you?

What is their CLV?

Customer Lifetime Value (CLV) is the tool that lets you put a dollar figure on what a customer could bring in over their entire relationship with you.

Once you know that, you know how much you can spend to bring in more customers just like them.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗖𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵?

To figure out CLV, you need to do three things...

1. Dig up all the transactions a customer has made with you. For each one, calculate how much profit you actually made after subtracting your costs.

2. Add those up, and there’s your number. That’s what each customer is worth on average.

3. Armed with that knowledge, you can now decide where to put your marketing dollars without throwing them down the drain.

𝗡𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗮𝗽

Are your campaigns experiencing higher costs, overspending and maybe even an under-spend?
One of the biggest reasons for poorly performing campaigns on Meta Ads I have experienced (Facebook Ads) is audience overlap!

Audience overlap occurs when individuals are included in multiple audiences you're targeting with your ads. Take, for instance, comparing two audiences: one interested in football and another that demonstrates the behavior of football fans. An analysis reveals a significant 86% overlap between these two audience segments. (refer image)

Why does this matter? Primarily, it can inflate your ad costs and lead to ad fatigue, making your audience less responsive due to repeated exposure.

The solution for me was in strategic exclusions or combining audiences at the ad set level, which can mitigate overlap and enhance campaign efficiency.

Note, that exclusions apply only to lookalike and custom audiences.

To manage overlap effectively on Facebook, consider the following approaches:

𝟭. 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁/𝗕𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘃𝘀. 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁/𝗕𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝘂𝗿:

Overlapping between these audiences is common. Combining them is often the best route. If distinct targeting is necessary you create an audience where specific interests & behaviors are excluded or you can allocate them to separate campaigns.

𝟮. 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁/𝗕𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘃𝘀. 𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲/𝗖𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺:

For overlaps between these groups, simply exclude the lookalike or custom audience from your Interest/Behaviour ad set.

𝟯. 𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲/𝗖𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺 𝘃𝘀. 𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲/𝗖𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺:

Here, you can either merge the audiences or exclude one from the other based on your strategic needs.

Addressing audience overlap effectively can significantly optimize your ad spend and campaign performance.

There are many other ways to mitigate audience overlap other than merging your audiences or exclusions, which include frequency capping, scheduling your campaign to run at different times etc.
