Cold wave intensifies, MeT forecasts dry weather for next 24 hours in J&K

SRINAGAR, Jan 12 : Intense cold because of the narrowing gap between the maximum and minimum temperatures continued in Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday as the Meteorological (MeT) office forecasted cold, dry weather during the next 24 hours in the union territory.

The maximum temperature was 5.8 degrees Celsius in Srinagar city on Saturday while the minimum temperature was minus 3 degrees on Sunday.

In Gulmarg, the maximum temperature was 2.4 degrees on Saturday while the minimum was minus 5.6 degrees on Sunday. Similarly, Pahalgam had a maximum temperature of 4.8 degrees while the minimum was minus 6.2 degrees on Sunday.

Jammu city had 10.5 degrees, Katra town 8.4, Batote 4.6, Banihal 0.7 and Bhaderwah 2.5 as the minimum temperature.

A MeT office statement said, “On January 12, generally cloudy in the morning and forenoon, and improvement thereafter. On January 13, mainly clear with dry weather. On January 14, generally cloudy with dry weather. On January 15 and 16, generally cloudy with light snow at isolated higher reaches. On January 17 and 18, generally cloudy.”

The 40-day-long period of harsh winter cold known locally as the ‘Chillai Kalan’ started on December 21 and will end on January 30. It is during this 40-day long period of intense cold that Kashmiris keep themselves warm with a loose tweed overgarment called the ‘Pheran’.

Underneath the Pheran, they hold a firepot woven in a basket of willow wicker called the ‘Kangri’. The two help locals keep cold away and survive the Chillai Kalan. — (IANS)

*Need to intensify ruthless war against drug trafficking: HM Amit Shah*

*'If we don’t act now, in 10-years, it will be too late; 44,792 kgs of seized narcotics worth Rs 2,411 crore will be incinerated in next 14 days'*

New Delhi, Jan 1: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday said that there is an urgent need for an uncompromising fight against narcotics to safeguard the future generations of India.
Addressing a regional conference on “Drug Trafficking and National Security” organized by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Shah, according to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), emphasized the critical importance of a "whole-of-government" approach and coordination between the Centre and States to combat the growing threat of drug addiction and trafficking.

"Seven percent of India's population are drug addicts. If we don’t act now, in ten years, it will be too late," Shah cautioned.

He warned that drug addiction has the potential to destroy entire generations, as seen in several countries across the world. “No country can remain secure if its youth are entangled in drug addiction,” he added.
Reiterating the government’s zero-tolerance policy towards drugs, Shah announced that during a drug disposal fortnight starting from January 11 to 25, over 44,792 kilograms of seized narcotics worth Rs 2,411 crore in the international market will be incinerated.

Highlighting the strides made over the past decade, he said that 24 lakh kilograms of drugs, valued at over Rs 56,000 crore, have been seized since 2014.
Shah said, “Critics are claiming that there has been an increase in drug consumption but the fact is that these figures reflect the success of enforcement agencies in cracking down on drug networks rather than an actual rise in use.”
He also emphasized the necessity of thorough investigations, financial probes into drug syndicates, and the complete dismantling of narco-terrorism networks.

Shah urged states to utilize technology like geo-tagging, videography, and real-time data-sharing through platforms such as the National Narcotics Helpline ‘MANAS’ portal to enhance coordination and effectiveness in anti-drug operations. He also called for increased use of the NIDAAN database to track and tackle trafficking activities.

The Unio Homer Minister pointed out significant gaps in enforcement infrastructure, such as the lack of special NDPS courts in several states, and urged states to make rules more flexible, train Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) officials, and ensure prosecution results in the punishment of accused individuals.

While advocating a tough stance against drug traffickers, Shah stressed the importance of a humane approach to rehabilitate drug addicts. “Drug addicts need to be treated as victims of a larger problem. We need detailed investigations that bust syndicates while also helping addicts return to society,” he said.

The Home Minister urged State Governments to act “ruthlessly” against drug peddlers, seize their properties under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT-NDPS) Act, and ensure swift trials through special courts.
He also called on state police chiefs to make districts drug-free and suggested regular evaluations of anti-drug efforts at the district level.

Shah further emphasized the need for Chief Ministers, Chief Secretaries, and Directors General of Police (DGPs) to ensure that anti-drug strategy meetings yield actionable results, adding that the establishment of strong State Forensic Science Laboratories (SFSLs) is crucial to bolster the fight against drugs.

Underlining Prime Minister Narendra Modi's commitment to a drug-free India by 2047, Shah said the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is pursuing a three-pronged strategy: strengthening institutional frameworks, enhancing inter-agency coordination, and launching massive public awareness campaigns under the ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat’ initiative.

“India is committed to preventing even a single kilogram of drugs from entering or leaving its borders. This requires top-to-bottom investigations, the destruction of trafficking networks, and a unified approach from all enforcement agencies,” Shah said—(KNO)

CM Omar launches J&K RTI Online Portal to simplify citizen access to information

Jammu, Jan 10 (KNO): Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Friday launched the Jammu & Kashmir Right to Information (RTI) Online Portal at the Civil Secretariat, marking a significant step towards enhancing transparency and accountability in governance.

The launch event was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary, Cabinet Ministers Sakeena Itoo, Javed Ahmad Rana, and Javed Ahmad Dar. Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister Dheeraj Gupta, administrative secretaries and senior officers were also present.

In his address, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah congratulated the officers involved in developing the portal, emphasizing its transformative potential in simplifying the RTI application process for citizens.

“This initiative will provide easy access to government information under the RTI Act, empowering citizens with a faster, more transparent, and cost-efficient mechanism,” he stated.

The Chief Minister also urged the concerned authorities to ensure widespread publicity of the initiative so that citizens across Jammu & Kashmir become aware of its benefits.

Developed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC) Jammu and Kashmir, the portal introduces a shift from manual to online RTI applications. This transition enables citizens to submit RTI requests, track their status, and receive responses electronically, eliminating the need for physical visits to government offices.

Earlier, Secretary General Administration Department (GAD), M. Raju, delivered a presentation on the portal’s features, highlighting its accessibility, convenience, speed of processing, cost efficiency and role in promoting accountability.

He outlined the portal’s key functionalities, including its user-friendly interface, streamlined RTI workflow, and robust documentation features.

A unique feature of the portal is the issuance of a registration number to applicants via SMS and email for future reference, enabling easy tracking of RTI applications.

The portal integrates 61 government departments, 272 nodal officers/public authorities, 720 First Appellate Authorities (FAAs), and 3,419 Central Public Information Officers (CPIOs) and Public Information Officers (PIOs), ensuring comprehensive coverage and making the citizens informed about the activities of the Government—(KNO)

*Mirwaiz Kashmir Kashmir Unveils the 2025 Mirwaiz Foundation Islamic Calligraphy Calendar*

*Calls for Heritage, Environmental Conservation And Collective Action for Sustainable Development in Kashmir*

Srinagar, Jan 10 : Unveiling the 2025 Islamic Calligraphy Calendar at Jama Masjid today, Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Dr Moulvi Muhammad Umar Farooq emphasized that this art form reflects the beauty and expression of human imagination and connects us to the eternal wisdom of the Word of Allah through the Quran. said that the theme for the year- The Splendour of Islamic Calligraphy, celebrates the art forms historical evolution, its diversity and cross cultural influences. The calendar is a tribute to Arabic calligraphy, the medium of Quranic revelation, foregrounding the connect between spirituality and our cultural heritage.

Addressing the gathering he said that safeguarding our heritage and our environment and ecology- which are all interconnected , is important as they all define our identity, our culture and our future survival as a people .Citing a Hadith of the Holy Prophet (PBUH), Mirwaiz emphasized that caring for Allah’s creations, protecting nature and avoiding wastage, are integral to a Muslim’s duty. Highlighting environmental concerns in the wake lowest water levels of Jhelum river in history of Kashmir at this time due to rising temperatures, glacial melting and irregular rainfall patterns, Mirwaiz said that experts warn that Jammu and Kashmir has lost 30% of its glaciers in the past 60 years, with the possibility of losing 70% by the end of the century if this trend continues. This will be devastating if allowed to happen. He further noted that unchecked and unplanned urbanisation, rapidly consuming agricultural land and orchards, and so forth are lopsided and narrow definitions of so called “development“. While growth is necessary, it must not come at the cost of disruption to the environment and ecology. Striking a balance is key, while foregrounding ecological and climatic concerns to protect the natural resources and beauty of Kashmir for future generations.

He called upon the government, the civil society, and all people in general to take accountability and collective action to address these challenges and protect Kashmir’s natural and cultural heritage.

Concluding his statement, Mirwaiz prayed for guidance from Allah toward wisdom and understanding in fulfilling these responsibilities. He also stressed upon the urgent need for the government to have a vision and follow it up with a proper road map and comprehensive planning to address these critical issues and ensure sustainable development in the region.

Meanwhile Anjuman Auqaf Jama Masjid has informed that physical copies of the calendar would be available at Jamia Masjid Srinagar, Gulshan Books Residency Road & Sheikh Mohammad Usman & Sons Gaw Kadal starting early next week against a nominal Hadiya of ₹ 75.

Two Brothers from North Kashmir Killed in Srinagar-Jammu Highway Accident

Baramulla, Jan 12, KNT: Two young brothers from North Kashmir’s Baramulla district lost their lives after their truck plunged into a deep gorge at Battery Chasma, an accident-prone stretch on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway.

The accident occurred late Thursday night at around 11:30 PM when the truck (JK04E-9110), reportedly out of the driver’s control, veered off the road and plummeted into a deep gorge. The victims, Yasir Ahmed and Danish Ahmed, hailed from Rafiabad Sopore in the Baramulla district.

Due to the massive depth of the gorge, the bodies of the deceased could not be retrieved during the night. An official from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) told the news agency Kashmir News Trust that, “the depth and terrain made it impossible to conduct rescue operations in the darkness. The operation commenced with the first light of Friday morning.”

The bodies of Yasir and Danish were recovered after several hours of effort. The truck, which had suffered extensive damage, was also located in the gorge.

The Battery Chasma stretch on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway is notorious for accidents due to its sharp turns and treacherous terrain.

The Ramban Police have registered a case under relevant sections of law and initiated an investigation into the cause of the accident. “Preliminary findings suggest that the truck may have skidded due to the challenging road conditions,” a police official said. [KNT]
