National Conference's Legacy of Betrayal: Power Over People

Dr. Farooq Abdullah’s recent statement in Jammu, claimin that Article 370 was primarily meant for the Dogras and not Kashmiris, is yet another glaring example of the National Conference's (NC) habit of manipulating public sentiment to cling to power. When addressing Kashmiris, they promise the return of Article 370; in Jammu, they dilute its importance; and in Delhi, they shift their tone to appease the central government. This pattern of deceit has been the NC’s playbook for decades, sacrificing public welfare for political survival.

If Article 370 was not for Kashmiris, as Dr. Abdullah now claims, why did the National Conference run its entire election campaign in Kashmir on the promise of its restoration? Why did they mislead the youth, the unemployed, and the struggling working class by offering them false hopes? This contradiction reveals the party's true priority—retaining power at any cost, even if it means deceiving the very people they claim to represent.

Betrayal Across Generations

The betrayal of the people of Jammu and Kashmir did not start in 2019; it began decades ago when Sheikh Abdullah, Farooq’s father, abandoned his demand for autonomy and settled for the Chief Minister’s chair instead of fighting for the aspirations of the people. This surrender marked the beginning of compromises that slowly eroded the special provisions they once championed. Over the years, NC has repeatedly shifted its stance—sometimes demanding autonomy, other times aligning with the central government when it suited their political needs.

Today, the hypocrisy continues. While people are suffering from unaffordable electricity bills, empty promises of free gas cylinders, and a collapsing economy, NC leaders enjoy their official privileges and lavish lifestyles. The common man struggles to pay for basic utilities, while students are facing massive exam scams that jeopardize their futures. Daily wagers remain unpaid and without job security, despite being promised relief in NC’s election manifestos. Farmers were assured of having their Kisan Credit Card (KCC) loans waived, but they continue to struggle under the burden of debt. Meanwhile, countless youth remain imprisoned, victims of false promises made during election campaigns.

The False Promises and Current Reality

Despite the hardships faced by the people, the National Conference leadership has now shifted gears, praising the central government and aligning themselves strategically to ensure their comfort and political survival. Instead of fighting for the people, they are seen cozying up to those in power, hoping to secure their privileges while the citizens they claim to represent are left to fend for themselves.

While the youth struggle with unemployment, the government employees demand fair wages, and businesses suffer due to economic downturns, the NC leadership remains indifferent—more concerned with their position than the well-being of the people. The very leaders who once spoke against the central government are now trying to align with them, exposing their lack of ideology and commitment.

Conclusion: Time to End the Deception

The people of Jammu and Kashmir must recognize the National Conference's double standards and decades of deception. The party has time and again chosen power over principles, comfort over commitment, and betrayal over betterment. The people deserve leadership that prioritizes their struggles—affordable electricity, better job opportunities, and an end to exploitation—over political survival.

It’s time to reject the politics of deception and demand real accountability from those who have ruled for decades yet failed to deliver. The people of J&K must move beyond empty slogans and choose leaders who truly work for their welfare, not just their own survival.
