Have you heard the story of the double-decker bus in Coochbehar, West Bengal? While Kolkata may have been the first to introduce this iconic mode of transportation, Coochbehar was the second city in the state to follow suit. However, its journey has been tumultuous, with several starts and stops over the years.

Despite the difficulties it encountered, Coochbehar's double-decker bus left a lasting impression on the history and culture of the city. Those who had the opportunity to ride it still talk warmly about the sight of the splendour of North Bengal from its upper deck.

The fact that Coochbehar only has one double-decker bus left today serves as a reminder of the significance of preserving the city's history for future generations.

Around 1880, rickshaws appeared in India, first in Simla. At the turn of the century it was introduced in Kolkata. By the time the wooden version of the Japanese rickshaw made its way to Calcutta, the then capital of British India, the city’s aristocratic families and zamindars (landlords) used to ride palanquins. Soon, hand-pulled rickshaw became the middleclass people’s (Bourgeois) answer to palanquins.

Today, despite the rise of modern transport, the hand-pulled rickshaw still exists and plays a crucial role in the livelihoods of many rickshaw pullers in the city.

Nowadays, According to the Survey's Kolkata has 18,000 rickshaw pullers as compared to only 6,000 rickshaws. Almost all the other countries where this mode of transport was prevalent, are quite done with it. The battery-operated rickshaws have now virtually replaced most of the hand-pulled rickshaws on the streets.

These rickshaws not only provide employment opportunities for the poor but also add the vintage charm and character to the city.

A region nestled in the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas, Dooars boasts of some of the most breathtaking landscapes in India. And one thing that remains common throughout your journey is the wonderful sight of vast stretches of sprawling tea gardens.

These tea gardens not only add to the scenic beauty of the region but also contribute to its economy as Dooars is home to some of the finest tea estates in the country.

The Dooars-Terai tea is characterized by a bright, smooth and full-bodied liquor that's a wee bit lighter than Assam Tea. Tea plantations in the Dooars region are spread over 97,280 hectares (240,400 acres). The region produces 226 million kg of tea, accounting for about a quarter of India’s total tea crop. There are 154 gardens in the Dooars out of 283 tea gardens in North Bengal that employ 3.5 lakh workers.
