Scales
The Major Scale is one of the most important and common scales in music. Itβs the foundation of Western music theory because chords, harmony, and melodies are often built from it.
π The major scale follows a fixed pattern of whole steps (W) and half steps (H):
W β W β H β W β W β W β H
For example, the C major scale (no sharps or flats) is:
C β D β E β F β G β A β B β C
Breakdown:
C β D = Whole step
D β E = Whole step
E β F = Half step
F β G = Whole step
G β A = Whole step
A β B = Whole step
B β C = Half step
Formula in Numbers (Degrees):
1 β 2 β 3 β 4 β 5 β 6 β 7 β (8/1)
Each degree has a name:
1. Tonic (root)
2. Supertonic
3. Mediant
4. Subdominant
5. Dominant
6. Submediant
7. Leading tone
β¨ From this, all major keys and their chords are built.
