The farmhouse lies in the small village of Thali, situated by the Satluj river in the foothills of the Western Himalayas, at an altitude of 750 metres. It is 52 km North of Shimla (Simla), the Historic Summer Capital of the British Raj. The farmhouse is 20 minutes walk from the nearest town Suni, Although there is a road (for vehicles) from Suni to the village Thali.
The area has been farmed for many centuries. Up until 1961, when the footbridge was built across the Satluj River , Thali was isolated from neighbouring Suni town, speaking its own dialect, the only way across the river, being by buffalo raft (Mushk). Around the 12th Century, it is thought that either a volcano erupted or a mountain collapsed, creating the nearby forest, where there were plenty of wild animals including deer, tiger, wolves, rhinos, bear, panther and mountain cats, which are now rarely found. At that time people had their own way of living, dressing and working, which is still going on. The farm-house is a century old, it has been built in the traditional way with mud and wood and has a slate roof.
You may have the chance to see: Eagles, Peacocks, Green Parrots, Kingfisher and other colourful birds seasonally.
On the farm you may see the following being grown: Mangos, Guava, Papaya, Bananas, Oranges, Pomagranties. The crops may include Rice, Wheat, Sweetcorn, Marrow, Pumpkin, Watermellow, Ladies Fingers, Capsicum, Green and Red Chillies, Tomatoes, Dal and other lentils. Herbs and Spices – Ginger, Tumeric, Corriander, Oregano, Mint and Fenugreek. There are frequent busses to Suni from shimla or Taxis direct to the Farmhouse.
