रूड़की का नाम रुरी/ रूड़ी से पड़ा, जो बड़गूजर राजपूत सरदार की पत्नी थी और पहले इसे 'रुरी की' भी लिखा जाता था। स्थानीय भाषी ग्रामवासियों का मानना है की इसे इसका नाम "रोरोन की" अर्थात रोर का निवास से मिला।
