Kochi, Kerala: Reserve Bank of India Governor Shaktikanta has said India is the "highest-ranked G20 country according to the Climate Change Performance Index 2023" and is also the "5th best-performing country globally".

During the 17th K P Hormis Commemorative Lecture by the RBI Governor, Shaktikanta Das on Friday said, "Given that India is widely expected to remain as one of the fastest growing economies in the world, our energy demand could rise manifold. The challenge for us is twofold: one, to meet the projected increase in energy demand; and two, to rapidly transition from fossil fuel to renewables."

"Climate proofing of our infrastructure has also been a priority, more so in view of the large investment in infrastructure in recent years," the governor said. "Through global forums such as the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI)4, India is providing leadership to global efforts for addressing these challenges," the RBI governor said.

The Governor said the ongoing global crisis was both an opportunity and a major test for the G20 which represents 85 per cent of world GDP and 75 per cent of global trade. "Following the East Asian financial crisis of 1997, the G20 was founded in 1999 as a forum for the Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors to discuss global issues and policy options," he added.

The Governor said, "Of the multiple risks facing the world community, the surge in inflation has posed a complex monetary policy dilemma in every economy between raising interest rates enough to tame inflation, and at the same time minimising the growth sacrifice to avoid a hard landing."

Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, one of India’s premier technological institutes, has witnessed a significant increase in its success rate for patents filed, according to its Director’s Report. The report, accessed by The Indian Express, said that in 2021-22, the institute filed 131 patents, with 96 being granted a considerable rise from six years ago when only about 27 patents out of the 116 filed were granted in 2016-17. The institute has also seen growth in overall Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) applications, including patents, trademarks, designs, and copyright, getting granted.

The report states that the institute has maintained a steady rise in the success rate of IPR applications being granted, with the number of patents granted witnessing an upward trend in recent years. The institute filed 164 patents in 2020-21, with 120 of them being granted. Even though the number of patents filed dropped to 131 in 2021-22, the institute maintained a success rate of over 73 per cent.

The report attributed the growth to targeted efforts to assess the possibility of intellectual property in the work of MTech/Dual degree students and proactive outbound prospecting for technologies protected/filed for protection by the institute. Moreover, the report highlighted a spurt in the number of IPR applications from 2020-21, attributed to the “filing of IPR applications for COVID-19 related technologies."

The Centre on Sunday filed an affidavit before the Supreme Court, opposing the legal recognition of same-s*x marriages in India.

Citing the concept of Indian families, the Centre told the apex court that same-s*x relationships & heteros*xual relationships are a “distinctive" class of relationships and it cannot be treated identically.

The Centre in it’s affidavit said, “Notion of marriage… necessarily and inevitably presupposes union bet 2 persons of opposite s*x. This definition is socially, culturally & legally ingrained into the very idea and the concept of marriage & ought not to be disturbed or diluted by judicial interpretation," according to Live Law.

According to the Centre, the legal recognition of the institution of marriage, “was limited to a relationship between a man and a women, represented as a husband and wife."

The Centre said that the legal recognition of same-s*x marriages results in the violation of existing and codified law provisions including, ‘conditions of marriage,’ ‘ceremonial and ritual requirements,’ ‘degrees of prohibited relationship.’

Same-s*x marriages were decriminalized and were now comparable with the the Indian family unit concept of a husband, a wife, and children.

This comes as the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear a batch of pleas seeking legal validation for same-s*x marriage on March 13 (Monday).

Washington: Four astronauts entered the International Space Station on Friday after their SpaceX Dragon Crew-6 mission successfully docked, a NASA livestream showed.
The SpaceX Dragon Endeavour spacecraft arrived at the orbiting station at 0640 GMT on Friday, the US space agency said in a statement.

NASA's Stephen Bowen and Warren Hoburg, Russia's Andrey Fedyaev and Sultan al-Neyadi of the United Arab Emirates entered the station about two hours later, the livestream showed.

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carrying the spacecraft had blasted off to the station on Thursday after the launch was scrubbed just minutes before liftoff earlier in the week.

The crew will spend six months on the station, where they will conduct more than 200 science experiments and technology demonstrations, according to SpaceX.

The mission was the first space flight for Neyadi, Hoburg and Fedyaev.

Neyadi, 41, is the fourth astronaut from an Arab country and the second from the oil-rich UAE to journey to space.

Fedyaev is the second Russian cosmonaut to fly to the ISS aboard a SpaceX rocket. NASA astronauts fly regularly to the station on Russian Soyuz craft.

Space has remained a rare venue of cooperation between Moscow and Washington since the Russian offensive in Ukraine placed them in sharp opposition.

Washington: Indian-American health justice lawyer Priti Krishtel and four other US-based experts have been named to the O'Neill-Lancet Commission on Racism, Structural Discrimination, and Global Health.
Housed at Georgetown University Law Centre in Washington, the three-year commission, co-led by UN Special Rapporteur on right to health, seeks to identify anti-racist strategies to improve health globally, according to its website.

The panel, including about 20 experts from across the globe, seeks to identify anti-racist strategies and actions to reduce barriers to health and well-being.

"I'm so proud to serve on this commission that will help shape a future where all people know they can keep their loved ones healthy, where people actively shape what access to medicines looks like for their families and communities," Ms Krishtel said in a statement.

Ms Krishtel has spent 20 years exposing structural inequities affecting access to medicines and vaccines across the Global South and in the United States.

Camara Jones, an African American family physician, and epidemiologist; Priti Krishtel, a health justice lawyer; Margareta Matache, a Roma scholar; Tendayi Achiume, a Southern African legal scholar; and Loyce Pace, assistant secretary for global affairs and US liaison, US Department of Health and Human Services, were named on February 9 to the O'Neill-Lancet Commission on Racism, Structural Discrimination, and Global Health.

14/02/2023

India does not believe in giving “sermons or cut-and-dried" solutions to countries in need of assistance and holds that nations with superior military powers do not have the right to dictate solutions to others, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Tuesday in an apparent reference to China’s assertive behaviour.

In an address to his counterparts and deputy defence ministers from around 30 countries at Aero India, Singh said India has always stood for a rules-based global order in which the primordial instinct of “might being right" is replaced by fairness, respect and equality amongst all sovereign nations.

Without naming China or any other country, Singh said the “top-down approach" towards solving problems has never been sustainable, adding often it leads to “debt trap, reaction from the local population and conflict." While referring to India’s emphasis on collective approach, Singh talked about how the COVID-19 pandemic originated in “one country" and how in no time, it had a devastating impact on the whole world, adding the crisis once again underscored the point that “we are all in the same boat and we either sink or swim together." In the conclave named SPEED (Shared Prosperity through Enhanced Engagements in Defence), Singh also called for united efforts to counter pressing challenges like terrorism.

To counter the security threats, Singh underlined the need for devising new strategies, adding India does not believe in dealing with such security issues in the “old paternalistic or the neo-colonial paradigms".

“We consider all nations as equal partners. That is why, we do not believe in imposing external or supra-national solutions to a country’s internal problems," he said.
