Abstract:
Natural disasters such as landslides have potential to jeopardize human life and seriously harm ecosystems. Ethiopia is among the countries most susceptible to landslides because of its mountainous terrain, strong and sustained rainfall, and dense development near steep hillsides. This study aimed to produce a landslide susceptibility map for the Sawla-Laska road corridor and its surroundings in Ethiopia using an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model. The QGIS model builder module was used to intersect 195 landslide polygons and 12 thematic raster pixels for the topographic, hydrological, proximity, geological, and environmental elements. The Generalized Weight (GW) results revealed strong correlations between proximity variables, slope, plane curvature, humicalisols, agricultural areas, settlements, scant vegetation, and barren terrain. In contrast, other factors exhibited negative and neutral interactions. The Receiver Operating Characteristics (ROC) curve showed acceptable results. The accuracy of the model ranges from 88% to 94%. Data were assorted into low, medium, and highly vulnerable zones representing 183.85 (75%), 14.55 (6%), and 47.6 (19.34%). The model performances demonstrate that the model can accurately predict the current situation in the future. Therefore, adequate land-use planning and environmental protection should be implemented based on the findings of this study and landslide susceptibility map.

Abstract:
Indian independence in 1947 and its consequences created a major change in the Indian administrative structure in which British India split into Hindu-dominated India and Muslim-dominated Pakistan, respectively. This division also fragmented the undivided Bengal and West Bengal and East Pakistan appeared on the world political map. These partitions played a crucial role among the inhabitants of both regions and they started to leave their country of origin. Hindus from East Pakistan especially women were one of those migrants who were displaced from their motherland and settled in West Bengal. This study deals with the situation, women faced during and after their displacement in West Bengal. It highlights their movement to achieve rehabilitation benefits from the government and their struggle to be financially independent individuals. Several archival reports, books, newspaper articles, etc. helped provide information regarding refugee women’s conditions from East Pakistan to West Bengal.

Abstract:
The urban fabric of Pune city has undergone massive changes due to diversifying urban functionalities. The study attempts to identify different urban morphological landscapes within the city based on Local Climate Zones (LCZs) configurations. After identification of urban morphology in accordance with the LCZ scheme, the microclimatic simulations for the performance and attenuation of the meteorological parameters that is air temperature (Ta), relative humidity (RH), mean radiant temperature (Tmrt), and wind speed (WS) was accomplished through ENVI-met during the warmest month for the city. The urban landscapes characteristics similar to the proposed LCZ configuration and to collect field data for the chosen meteorological parameters ground survey was done. In addition to field observations, climatological normals and long-term trends for the meteorological parameters were also analyzed. The simulation results revealed that barren lands are warmer (by ~18℃) than the compact city core due to the heat sink effect. For Ta and RH the simulation is more reliable in case of open LCZs (R2~0.9) compared to compact LCZs (R2~0.5). With changing LCZs, there is no significant change in the simulation except continuous underestimation of the Tmrt and the role of wind flow in modifying Tmrt was noticed.

Abstract:
The socioeconomic variables have a strong impact on the decision-making and physical movement of women, worldwide studies suggest the same. In this study, we have tried to know the various determinants of women’s autonomy. We have taken the data from the fourth round National Family Health Survey (NFHS) (2015-16), published by the International Institution on Population Sciences (IIPS). For the statistical analysis, we used basic descriptive statistics and cross-tabulation between the socioeconomic variables and autonomy responses. Later to predict the occurrence of various autonomy aspects, binary logistic regression has been used with various socioeconomic variables. After getting the results, it has come to know that women’s decision-making and freedom of movement-related autonomy are largely influenced by socioeconomic variables. Major findings stated that with increasing age of women, autonomy increases. Women who belong to the rural setup have a low level of autonomy. From a religious perspective, women from the Muslim community have lower autonomy. Apart from these women have higher education, employed and in rich households have a higher likelihood of autonomy. Based on the outcomes, it is clear to us that women’s autonomy is largely influenced by their socioeconomic condition.

Abstract:
The present research was aimed to evaluate the educational potentiality of southern states of India using a new innovative Composite Education Index (CEI). An integrated seven step procedure was followed for the calculations of CEI. After preparing a composite hierarchical structure using two parameters, ten criteria and twelve indicators, the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and weighted sum technique were applied to get the CEI. The lowest category of CEI was marked with 20.573% area, the low category with 27.817% area, the moderate category with 20.771% area and the highest category were marked with 30.839% area of the study region. Further, the CEI was compared with School Education Quality Index (SEQI) and a high R-square value of 97.3% was obtained. Therefore, the CEI can be utilized to measure educational potentialities without hesitation. A large number of indicators are merged in this index, and it is flexible and easy to implement in any region.

Abstract:
The study of spatial distribution of precipitation is an important aspect of water-related research like, hydrological modeling, disaster prediction and watershed management. But, spatial interpolations of annual average rainfall in Ethiopia using Simple and Universal Kriging type through different models has not yet investigated. This study was focused on to select the best fit semivarogram model for annual rainfall interpolation and to map the spatial distribution of rainfall of Ethiopia. In this study, long term mean annual rainfall which was collected from 931 meteorological station were interpolated using different mathematical variogram models of Kriging to select the best fit variogram model useful to predict continuous surface values of annual average rainfall in Ethiopia. Spherical model was found to be the best fitted variogram model and most accurate model for interpolation using both Simple and Universal Kriging with the value of ME (0.005), RMSE (1.21) and MSDR (121.32) and ME (0.001), RMSE (0.88) and MSDR (144.11), respectively. Since the kriging results of spherical model indicate good model efficacy for this study, it may be useful to map spatial pattern of annual rainfall in Basin level in Ethiopia.

Abstract:
The concerns over land use and land cover (LULC) change have emerged on the global stage due to realization that changes occurring on the land surface also influence climate, ecosystem and its services. This study aimed to map the temporal dynamic of LULC patterns and LST in the Jarmet wetland in Ethiopia. The dynamics and pattern of changes for a period of 21 years (2000-2021) were analyzed using geospatial techniques. Multi-temporal satellite images from Landsat ETM+ and Landsat-8 OLI sensor data were used to extract land-cover maps. The Land Surface Temperature (LST) trend of the study areas was computed using MODIS satellite imagery (2000-2021). Supervised classification using a Maximum Likelihood Classifier (MLC) was applied to prepare LULC maps of the watershed. The accuracy of the classified map was assessed using high-resolution data, and ground realities have been verified and ascertained through field observations. The results revealed a decreased trend in wetland, forest, shrubland and grassland in the period of 21 years (2000-2021) by -1148.71ha, -1073.26 ha, -1480.1 ha, and -87.73 ha, respectively. On the other hand, farmland and plantation areas followed an increasing trend. LST revealed decreasing trend in terms of mean and minimum with a fraction change of -0.018 and -0.073, whereas the maximum LST value shows an increasing trend with 0.021. The overall accuracy was 84.41%, with Kappa index of 76.13%. The analysis and findings of the study highlight important policy implications for sustainable LULC management in the study area. The study suggests the design and implementation of a guided natural resource policy, stopping the illegal expansion of farmland and educating society about the value of the sustainable management of habitat reserves.

Abstract:
Poverty eradication and employment creation have been central objectives of planners and policymakers in developing countries like India. As a backdrop, a significant number of schemes were created to generate employment and foster long-term economic growth. This article examines the influence of employment initiatives on employment generation and economic upliftment in rural area of Kashmir. Both primary and secondary data sources are employed in this study. The data was analyzed by using a log-linear regression model and correlation analysis. Knowledge Index was used to determine respondents’ awareness of employment programs. The findings indicate a linkage between the amount of money spent and the creation of employment opportunities. The findings also demonstrate that changes in people’s income have the major impact on family expenditure, hospital and medical costs, children’s education, and household savings. Finally, the study concluded that increasing employment days and rural credit will result in more revenue in people’s hands and improved economic empowerment.

Abstract:
It’s no exaggeration to say that floods are among the most common and catastrophic natural disasters, with widespread impacts on ecosystems and human lives. The World Bank has concluded that India is one of the most flood-prone countries in the world. This research has been focused on identification of real-time flood hazard area in the Malda district (India) using SAR data, Sentinel-1A (C-band). ArcGIS, Erdas-Imagine, and SNAP were used for this analysis. These inundation layers were intersected with the Malda district village’s database to determine the full extent of the devastation caused by the floods and finally determined the real-time flood-impacted area (380.19 km² on 4th September and 338.87 km² on 10th September, 2019). It was noted that on 4th September, 766 and 10th September 765 villages were seriously devastated owing to water. Moreover, among the 15 blocks of this district, Harischandrapur-II (75.67%), Manikchak (68.60%) and Kaliachak-III (68.00%) have experienced the most flooding. Finally, in order to estimate the overall population, households and affected by the floods, stratified random sampling was carried out in the flood-impacted villages of the Malda district. The safest blocks are Chanchal-I, Gazole, Harischandrapur-I and Kaliachak-I and the highly vulnerable blocks are Harischandrapur-II, Kaliachak-III and Manikchak. According to the flood influences on children, the most vulnerable blocks are Malda Old, English Bazar, Kaliyachak-III, and Harishchandrapur-II.

Author(s): Dr. Mouhcine EL-HAJJAMI
The Sociological, Psychological and Cultural Studies Center, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdellah University, Fes, Morocco.
Abstract:
This article aims to interrogate the portrayal of the female body and the sexual politics of the male gaze in ‘Abdelkader Lagtaâ’s A Love Affair in Casablanca’. It argues that the cinematic discourse that contests patriarchal hegemony through liberating the female body objectifies and fragments women’s identity. Hence, the erotic representation of the women characters in Lagtaâ’s film empowers patriarchal hegemony by gratifying male heterosexual desires. Therefore, this article analyzes and examines the film’s text and iconography to examine how Lagtaâ contradicts his liberal attitudes vis-à-vis the emancipation of women from the suppressive sways of patriarchy. Additionally, his commercial film approach stimulates the pleasure in looking and reinforces the subjugation of women. Therefore, although the film director has tried to give the main female character a central role within the film narrative, he could not go beyond the representational politics of defamation against femininity and gender identity.

Abstract:
The drought phenomenon is linked to the water scarcity and these are the pressing issues that require careful and thoughtful consideration. Drought in India mostly affects regions that are part of numerous plateaus, including the Chottanagpur plateau and the Deccan plateau. The Paschim Medinipur District of West Bengal, which is located in the southern portion of the Chottanagpur plateau, has recently experienced extreme and severe drought on multiple occasions. The assessment of the drought scenario in this region is, nevertheless, still very far from being finalized. Using the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) at various time intervals (e.g., 3 months, 6 months, 12 months and 48 months) between 1979 and 2014, we have evaluated drought both geographically and temporally in this study. Here, the drought evaluation metrics include peak intensity, average intensity, magnitude, occurrence rate (%) and trend. Peak intensity, magnitude, average drought intensity, and the frequency of Extreme to Severe (ES) droughts are all seen to decline noticeably as time steps move forward. The frequency of moderate droughts starts to rise as time moves forward. Peak intensity, magnitude, average drought intensity, drought duration, ES and moderate drought occurrence rate is high in southern and southwestern portions of Paschim Medinipur. Additionally, the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) composite scores used to identify the drought-prone zones are estimated using the aforementioned parameters at various time steps. As the time step increases the area under the high and high moderate drought prone zone decreases, but very low and low drought prone area increases. Overall 16% area is found under high to high moderate drought prone category, whereas, approximately, 65% area is found under the low to low moderate drought category. The outcome of this research may be helpful to combat with drought and to make a fruitful move to manage water resources in the Paschim Medinipur region, West Bengal. Additionally, the study makes use of a superb methodology to comprehend the spatiotemporal variation of meteorological drought, which is applicable to all parts of the globe.
