नवरात्रीच्या पहिल्या दिवशी दुर्गा किंवा महाकाली या देवीची प्रतिष्ठापना करतात आणि नऊ दिवस दुर्गादेवीचा उत्सव साजरा केला जातो. आज आपण दुर्गादेवी महिषासुरमर्दिनी कशी झाली, यासंबंधीची कथा पाहूया.
फार पूर्वी महिषासुर नावाचा एक राक्षस होता. तो लोकांचा अतिशय छळ करत असे. एकदा त्याने प्रत्यक्ष इंद्राशी युद्ध केले आणि इंद्राला पराजित करून त्याचे स्थान बळकावले. इंद्राला पराभूत केल्यामुळे महिषासुराला आपल्या शक्तीचा फार गर्व झाला. तो सर्वांशी अधिकच उन्मत्तपणे वागू लागला. महिषासुराचा दिवसेंदिवस वाढत चाललेला अत्याचार पाहून सर्व देवांनी एकत्र येऊन ब्रह्मा, विष्णु आणि महेश यांना प्रार्थना केली अन् या संकटातून सोडवून महिषासुराला कायमचा धडा शिकवण्यास विनवले.
तिन्ही देवांनी एकत्र येऊन आपापल्या शक्तीने मिळून एक देवी निर्माण केली. शंकराच्या तेजाने देवीचे मुख, विष्णूच्या तेजाने हात आणि अग्नीच्या तेजाने तीन डोळे निर्माण झाले. अशा प्रकारे प्रत्येक देवाने देवीचा एकेक अवयव सिद्ध केला आणि त्यातून साक्षात् दुर्गादेवीची निर्मिती झाली. शिवाने आपला त्रिशूळ, विष्णूने चक्र, इंद्राने वज्र, अशी विविध आयुधे सर्व देवांनी तिला बहाल केली.
देवांच्या तेजापासून निर्माण झालेल्या या सर्वशक्तीमान दुर्गादेवीने महिषासुराला मारण्यासाठी रौद्र रूप धारण केले. महिषासुर आणि दुर्गा यांच्यात नऊ दिवस घनघोर युद्ध झाले. महिषासुराला देवांकडुन वर मिळाला होता की जर त्याचे रक्त जमिनीवर पडले तर त्या रक्ताचा प्रत्येक थेंबाचे नवीन राक्षसात रुपांतर होईल, दुर्गा देवी प्रयत्न करत होती की महिषासुराला मारून टाकायचे, पण त्याच्या रक्तामुळे नवीन राक्षस निर्माण झाले, म्हणून तिने देवी कालीचे रूप धारण केले आणि ते रक्त जमिनीवर पडू नये म्हणून त्याचे रक्त प्याले आणि तिने त्याचा वध केला.
दुर्गादेवीने महिषासुराचा वध केला. महिषासुराचा वध केल्यामुळे दुर्गादेवीला महिषासुरमर्दिनी म्हणू लागले. या प्रसंगाची आठवण म्हणून आपण नवरात्रीचा उत्सव साजरा करतो.
