Shopian Media Association Holds Meeting to Address Key Issues and Announce New Initiatives.

The Shopian Media Association convened a meeting today with the primary objective of addressing the challenges faced by the association and its members. During the meeting, the association’s by-laws and emblem were formally presented and subsequently approved, marking a significant milestone in its organizational development.

A key point of discussion was the necessity of organizing workshops in the future to enhance members’ knowledge of journalism. The meeting also reaffirmed the association’s commitment to resolving any issues faced by its members. Furthermore, members were urged to adhere to the ethical standards of journalism and operate within its defined boundaries.

The meeting was attended by President Gulzar Habib, Treasurer Shahid Tak, Spokesperson Ajaz Dar, and other esteemed members of the association. President Gulzar Habib emphasized that addressing the legitimate concerns of members remains a top priority.

Additionally, it was announced that the Shopian Media Association has acquired a dedicated office space, which will be inaugurated soon. This office will serve as a central hub for media professionals, ensuring a more structured and efficient working environment. Members expressed their satisfaction and enthusiasm over this development, recognizing it as a significant step forward for the association.

President Gulzar Habib further highlighted the approval of the association’s by-laws, stating that having an official framework in place is a matter of great pride and a milestone in strengthening the association’s foundation.

Shopian Village Deprived of Basic Amenities for Seven Years, Urge Authorities for Action

Srinagar, Feb 13, KNT: Villagers of Nagahad Babapora, a Gujjar locality in South Kashmir’s Shopian district, have been struggling without access to drinking water and electricity for the past seven years, forcing them to live in dire conditions. Despite repeated pleas to authorities, their grievances remain unaddressed, prompting fresh appeals to the Deputy Commissioner Shopian and the local Member of Legislative Assembly for immediate intervention.

The affected villagers, mostly from the economically weaker Gujjar community, lament that their repeated representations to government officials have yielded no results. They allege that successive administrations have ignored their plight, leaving them to endure an existence devoid of basic necessities.

One of the most pressing concerns in Nagahad Babapora is the acute scarcity of drinking water. Residents claim that they are forced to fetch water from distant streams and springs, a practice fraught with difficulties, especially during the harsh winter months. The lack of a proper water supply has not only affected daily life but also raised serious health concerns due to the consumption of untreated water.

“We have been demanding a functional water supply scheme for years, but nothing has been done so far. Women and children walk several kilometers daily to fetch water, which is unsafe and often contaminated,” Abdul Rehman, a local resident told the news agency Kashmir News Trust.

Adding to their woes, Nagahad Babapora remains in darkness as the village has been without electricity for the past seven years. The absence of a power supply has severely impacted education, healthcare, and overall quality of life. Students struggle to study after sunset, and the lack of electricity has hampered access to modern communication and development opportunities.

“We are living in medieval times. Our children cannot study at night, and we are cut off from the rest of the world. It is disheartening that in this day and age, we are still deprived of electricity,” said another resident, Muhammad Yousuf.

Villagers claim that they have approached the concerned departments multiple times but have received only hollow assurances. They allege that officials conduct surveys and inspections but fail to implement any concrete solutions.

The villagers immediate action from the authorities to resolve their long-standing issues.“We have been patient for too long. If the administration continues to neglect us, we will be left with no choice but to take to the streets.” [KNT]

After facing huge problems in irrigating their apple orchards, the farmers of Alishahpora and Wadipora pooled money out of their own pockets to retrieve and restore the water canal which passes through the Handew village. In this connection they wrote to Tehsildar Imamsahib who himself along with the concerned patwaris visited the spot to address the issue. But some miscreants for their personal interests interrupted the work. The adminstration has assured every legitimate help to the farmers and said that strict action will be taken against the people interrupting the work. The administration has also said that the encroachment on water bodies will not be tolerated.

The District Administration, Shopian today bids warm and emotional farewell to Mohammad Shahid Saleem Dar, the outgoing Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Shopian upon his transfer from the District.

As DC Shopian, Shahid Saleem worked dedicatedly and led departments to drive growth and development in the district and ushered in impactful & peaceful elections.

His efforts had a positive impact on the lives of the people in Shopian and administrative set up of district,said officers who spoke on the occasion of farewell.His work ethic and emphasises on efficiency & promptness in deliverance was key to his phenomenal tenure in Shopian, added senior officers of the district.

Shahid Saleem has been instrumental in various initiatives and programs in Shopian during his short stint of 5 months, including promoting socio-economic development,addressing the issue of drug addiction,free Civil services & NEET coaching, engaging youth in sports and competitive initiatives among other new and innovative approaches to the administration.

The farewell ceremony was attended by officials from the district administration and police, and other stakeholders who worked with Shahid Saleem during his tenure as DC, including SSP Anayat Ali, ADDC,Dr.Nasir Ahmad Lone, ADC,Dr.Zakir Hussain Faaz and other district and tehsil officers and officials.
