The Story of Imam Ahmad Bin Hanbal RA and the Baker

This story about “Istighfar” is from the life of Imam Ahmed Bin Hanbal, RA who is considered as a renowned scholar of Islam and a famous theologian. Imam Ahmed RA is also considered to be the founder of the Hanbali school of fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) and is one of the most celebrated Sunni theologians, often referred to as the “Sheikh ul-Islam” or the “Imam of Ahl al-Sunnah.”
During his old age, while Imam Ahmed RA was travelling he stopped by a town. After the prayers, he wanted to stay for the night in the masjid yard because he didn’t know anyone in the town. Owing to his humility, he hadn’t introduced himself to anyone thinking that if he did, he would be welcomed by many people.
Failing to recognize Ahmed bin Hanbal, RA the caretaker of the mosque refused to let him stay in the mosque. As Imam Ahmed was quite old, the caretaker had to drag him out of the mosque. On seeing this, a baker from a nearby place felt pity for this man (Imam Ahmed RA ) and offered to be the host to him for the night. During his stay with the baker, Imam Ahmed RA observed that the baker would constantly recite Istighfar (seek forgiveness from Allah). Imam Ahmed asked the baker if the constant practice of saying Istighfar had any effect on him. The baker responded by telling Imam Ahmed RA that Allah had accepted all of his duas (supplications), except one. When he asked him what dua was it that hadn’t been accepted, the baker replied that he had been asking Allah to provide him the privilege to meet the famous scholar Imam Ahmed bin Hanbal RA.
On this, Imam Ahmed bin Hanbal RA said that Allah had not only listened to his dua but had dragged him onto his (the baker’s) doorsteps.

This is the tomb of the great companion of the Prophet ﷺ and his beloved cousin, Sayyiduna Qutham ibn ''Abbas in Uzbekistan. He was the last one to leave the blessed resting place of Rasulallah ﷺ at the time of his burial and the last person to ever touch him and gaze upon him. He was also from those who physically resembled the Messenger of Allah ﷺ the most. Others who resembled the Messenger of Allah ﷺ including Sayyiduna Hasan ibn 'Ali and the grandfather of Imam al-Shafi'i. Rasulallah ﷺ spoke about Sayyiduna Ibrahim and he said, 'I am the most of resembling of people to him...'

No one in the universe was given knowledge similar to his knowledge. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ promised that Yemen would be conquered and it happened. He promised Shaam would be conquered and it happened. He promised Iraq and Persia would be Conquered and it happened. He promised Bayt al-Maqdis to the Muslims and it happened. He promised this ummah will spread in every place that the sun rises - and it happened.

He promised that there would come a time when his lovers would give up the world to see him one time - and it happened. Sometimes, when we look at the state of the ummah, it's easy to despair. But don't forget that Rasulallah ﷺ said that a time will come when this ummah will get get again rise, justice will once again come truth, and we will once again see barakah. Imam al-Ghazali said that people are loved for one of 3 things; their perfection, their beauty or their generosity and giving. He then asks, "So what do you think of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ! He was given the pinnacle of every goodness, every greatness, and every blessings. So how is it that he cannot be loved!"

Bismillahirahmanirahim

Shaykh Mustafa Sabri was the last Shaykh al-Islam of the Ottoman empire. He gave an important advice for every scholar, caller to the deen and person in a position of authority

'It is better to starve than to compromise on the rulings of this religion and the religion that was taught by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.'

The Prophet ﷺ said that at the end of times holding on to the religion would be like holding on to heated coal. Someone asked Shaykh Badr al-Din al-Hasani [over a 100 years ago] — 'are we in that time?' The Shaykh said, 'We are far beyond that stage! We are now at the stage that the Prophet ﷺ described when he said, "A person will wake up a believer and go to sleep a disbeliever. And a person will go to sleep as a believer and wake up as a disbeliever.'"

No money, job, and position could ever outweigh the true sweetheart of faith that one experiences by being loyal to Allah and His Messenger ﷺ. May Allah protect our faith and allow us to leave this world with La ilaha ila Allah Muhammad Rasulallah ﷺ

During his thirty years of intense training under Shaykh ‘Abd Allah Daghestani, Shaykh Nazim was placed in numerous seclusions. When he was only 33 years old, he was ordered into seclusion by Shaykh ‘Abd Allah Daghestani who told him, “I have received an order from the Prophet ﷺ for you to make seclusion in the mosque of Shaykh ‘Abd al Qadir Jilani راضي الله عنه in Baghdad. You go there and make seclusion for six months.”

About this same seclusion Shaykh Nazim himself states, “I only emerged from my room for the five prayers. Other than that I spent my whole time in that room. I was able to reach such a state that I was reciting the whole Qur’an in nine hours. In addition to that I was reciting 124,000 times the Dhikr ‘Laa ilaha ill-Allah’ and 124,000 prayers on the Prophet (salawat) and I was reading the entire Dalail al-Khayrat [book of devotions]. Added to that I was regularly reciting 313,000 ‘Allah Allah’ every day, in addition to all the prayers that were assigned to me. Vision after vision was appearing to me every day. HAZRAT DADA SADAYA SUHARWARDI R.A

Hazrat Mohammad Siddique, commonly known as Hazrat Dada Sadaya or Hazrat Dada Sadruddin was a Sufi saint belonging to the Suhrawardi silsila and was a mureed of Hazrat Sheikh Ruknuddin Abul Fath, grandson and successor of Hazrat Khwaja Bahauddin Zakariya Suhrawardi of Multan. He introduced Islam to scores of people in the Kutch/Sindh region in present day India/Pakistan. The descendants of those introduced to Islam by Hazrat Dada Sadaya are known as Luhar Wadhas (blacksmiths) and today, sizeable Luhar Wadha communities exist in India, Pakistan, East Africa, USA, Canada and the UK.
BACKGROUND
Hazrat Dada Sadaya was an Arab Muslim missionary of the Quraysh lineage (the same tribe that the Holy Prophet ﷺ belonged to). He was also a descendant of Hazrat Thameem bin Ahmad Al-Ansari a companion of the Holy Prophet ﷺ, who was among the 313 honourable Sahabi (companions of the Holy Prophet ﷺ) who participated in the Battle of Badr. Hazrat Thameem Al-Ansari had an immense following in the kingdom of Sindh, where he moved to during the rule of Hazrat Umar , residing there for a period of 18 years. Today, there are a number of people that reside in the Sindh region of Pakistan who are descendents of the disciples of Hazrat Thameem Al-Ansari Hazrat Dada Sadaya lived approximately 700 years ago in a town called Walhar in Sindh. Through steadfast ibadat (worship) and muraqaba (meditation), he achieved an elevated spiritual status from a very early age. After travelling to Makka al-Mukarrama and Madina al-Munawara, he returned to Kutch/Sindh region to preach Islam.
IN KUTCH
As Hazrat Dada Sadaya came to Kutch, he settled near a mountain by a village called Nara, where he carried out ibadat (worship) and muraqaba (meditation). At the time there was no source of drinking water near the village. Hazrat Dada Sadaya thus raised his hands and prayed for a source of drinking water. Remarkably, a stream, which still flows today, emerged from the mountain from which the residents of the village were able to benefit. This stream led to a place called Hudud where Hazrat Dada Sadaya began his work as a blacksmith. The tools that he used, such as the anvil and hammer, still remain there today.
As he settled down in the village and established himself, he became aware that many people were uneducated and unemployed. He later established a school to benefit the local people and taught them to become skilled blacksmiths and carpenters. It for this reason the title of “Luhar Wadha” (blacksmith) is given to the descendants of these people. Through this school, he also introduced the townspeople to the religion of Islam and established the Hanafi Fiqh (school of thought) in the town. People of the Muru Rajani, Mandar and Bhi tribes were among the first people to join the school.
LOVE FOR HIS SHEIKH
Hazrat Dada Sadaya was a mureed of Hazrat Sheikh Ruknuddin Abul Fath, grandson and successor of Hazrat Khwaja Bahauddin Zakariya Suhrawardi of Multan. One day Hazrat Dada Sadaya wanted to see his spiritual guide, so he travelled by foot along with one of his followers to meet his beloved Sheikh.
When they reached the city of Multan, it was almost night and they were faced with the problem of having to cross the Ravi River, which could only be traversed by boat. However, Hazrat Dada Sadaya was very eager to meet his teacher that same night. They tried to negotiate with a boatman to take them across the river but the man declined citing it was too risky to take them across the river at that time of night. The boatman said:
It is too much of a risk to cross the river at night so you must wait until the morning. In the morning, I will take you to the other side.

I am not prepared to wait that long. I am so determined to meet my Sheikh that I will walk through the river. I will reach the other side and gain reward for my pilgrimage.
The boatman expressed contempt and was dismissive of Hazrat Dada Sadaya’s claim. The boatman said “He is nothing but a fakir and is talking nonsense”, after which he walked away. Without delay, Hazrat Dada Sadaya ordered his follower to bring him a jug of water and the follower filled the jug with water from the river. Amazingly, the river dried up and they were thus able to cross the river.
In the morning, the townspeople saw that the river had dried up and pleaded with Hazrat Dada Sadaya to make the river flow once again. In spite of this plea, Hazrat Dada Sadaya refused and told the people that the river will never flow again. This dried up river bed can still be seen in Sindh today.
As Hazrat Dada Sadaya got older, he appointed his assistant, who was from the Langah tribe, as Sajjada Nashin (caretaker) of his mausoleum following his death. The descendents of Hazrat Dada Sadaya’s apprentice were appointed to look after his burial site for generations to come. Today there is no recognised descendent of Hazrat Dada Sadaya’s first Sajjada Nashin safeguarding the mausoleum, although members of the Langah tribe take it upon themselves to look after the burial site.
Hazrat Dada Sadaya’s tomb is located in Kutch approximately 5 miles away from the famous Haji Pir Dargah. It is situated in an old cemetery near Karol Pir Dargah.
URS
Although the date of Hazrat Dada Sadaya’s demise is unknown, his Urs (death anniversary) is commemorated by Luhar Wadhas on the last Wednesday in the Islamic month of Safar. In Mumbai in particular, a massive gathering takes place.
LEGACY
Today, there are Muslim Luhar Wadha communities all across the world with many in India, Pakistan, East Africa, USA, Canada and the UK. Large communities exist in Kutch, Mumbai (India), Karachi (Pakistan), Mombasa (Kenya) and several other places.

(Syed of Syeds and a leader of Iran; who shaped the destiny of nations) (Allama Iqbal)

Many great saints, sages, and savants came to Kashmir for promoting and propagating ‘Islam’. Among these personages, ‘Syed Ali Hamdani (R.A)’ is the most prominent and is considered as the founder of Islam in the valley.

Imam E Rabbani Hazrat Mujadid Alif Sani Shaykh Ahmad Sirhindi R.A. Imām-i Rabbānī Shaykh Ahmad al-Farūqī al-Sirhindī (1564–1624) was an Indian Islamic scholar from Punjab and a prominent member of the Naqshbandī Sufi order. He is described as Mujaddid Alf Thānī, meaning the “reviver of the second millennium”, for his work in rejuvenating Islam and opposing the heterodox prevalent in the time of Mughal Emperor Akbar. He is said to have had considerable and long-lasting influence in India and to have given “to Indian Islam the rigid and conservative stamp it bears today.”
Shaykh Ahmad Sirhindi’s preaching and revival was a reaction to the secular policies of Mughal emperor Akbar. He denounced Akbar’s policy of sull-i kul (mixing all religions into one), and Akbar’s reign as one where “the sun of guidance was hidden behind the veil of error.” Sirhindi believed that “what is outside the path shown by the prophet (Sharia) is forbidden.” He wrote, “Cow-sacrifice in India is the noblest of Islamic practices. The kafirs may probably agree to pay jiziya, but they shall never concede to cow-sacrifice.

He was a caretaker in Masjid al-Nabawi and would often go into the Chambers (inside the golden gates). In an interview he was asked what he experienced and he replied, 'I swear by Allah that there are angels presents there. When I would enter it would feel as though my core would be shaken due to the power and might inside that area.' He also said that sometimes he would sit a few metres away from the wall that has the resting place of Rasulallah ﷺ behind it and he would voices and sounds. The Prophet ﷺ said that the Prophets are alive in their graves and praying (in a way that we cannot comprehend).

Before Abu Sufyan accepted Islam, he spoke about the adab that the Sahaba had for Rasulallah ﷺ and said, 'I have never seen a person in this world love anyone like the Companions of Muhammad ﷺ love Muhammad ﷺ.'

When 'Urwa ibn Mas'ud went to negotiate on behalf of Quraysh and he saw the love that the Sahaba had — he returned to the disbelievers and said, 'O people! I take an oath by Allah, I have entered upon and been in the company of kings and rulers but Wallahi, I have never seen a king or ruler being honoured, revered and magnified the way the Companions of Muhammad honour, respect and revere him. They don't allow his saliva to leave his mouth except that it is in the hands of one of them and they wipe it over their faces and bodies. When he instructs them to do something they rush to fulfill it. When he performs wudhu — they desperately compete with one another for the water. When he speaks they lower their voices out of humility.' Rasulallah ﷺ is the soul of our iman, he is the Qibla of our hearts, he is the centre of this Deen, and he is more beloved to us than everything in this world.

'How will a people who don't even allow the droplets of their Prophet's wudhu ﷺ to touch the earth ever allow for a single drop of his blood to touch the earth?'

••• Another Sayyid martyr you should know about •••
Ibrahim Qatīl Bākhamrā - the Martyr of Bakhamra - al-Hasani.

He is a 5th generation grandson of the Prophet ﷺ.

His blessed lineage: Ibrahim, son of Abd Allah al-Kamil s/o Hasan al-Muthanna s/o Imam Hasan s/o Lady Fatima d/o of our Master and Allah’s Messenger Muhammad ﷺ.

After many Hasani Sayyid’s were arrested, tortured, and killed in Kufa [1] by the Abbasid ruler al-Mansur in 762 for reasons which are beyond the scope of this post, two brothers from the Hasani line, Muhammad al-Nafs al-Zakiyya (the Pure Soul) and Ibrahim Qatil Bakhamra revolted against the Abbasid regime. A third brother, Idris al-Awwal established the Sayyid Idrisid caliphate in Morocco. Muhammad the Pure Soul revolted in Medina – this will be detailed in a future post.

Ibrahim gathered his forces and encountered the far larger Abbasid army at a place called Bakhamra, near Kufa. He was martyred in battle, aged 48 years, on Monday, 25 Dhu al-Qa’da 145 AH. His head was decapitated and taken to Egypt.

[1] I briefly wrote about this in an earlier post dated 15 October 2018:

The Imprisonment and Torture of The Family of Imam Hasan - grandson of Allah's Messenger (peace be upon them)

Part 1/2 - Princes Held Captive

Note
- I am translating the narrative of this tragedy as recorded in al-Kamil of ibn al-Athir. This is part 1. The purpose is to bring these vital historical facts into the public domain.
- In the names, [b.] means "son of."

Ibn al-Athīr in his History writes:

We previously said that al-Mansur imprisoned them. It also said that it was Rayāh [b. Uthman] who imprisoned them.

Ali b. Abd Allah said: We went to the door of Rayah inside the enclosure. The caller announced: "Whoever here is from the family of al-Husayn, may enter." So, they entered via the door in the enclosure.

They then left via the door of Marwan. Then the caller announced, "Whoever here is from the family of al-Hasan, may enter." So, they entered via the door in the enclosure. Iron smiths from the family of Marwan also entered whereupon the caller gave called for the capture of Imam Hasan's family. They were captured and imprisoned. The captives were:

1. Abd Allah b. Hasan al-Muthanna b. Imam Hasan b. Imam Ali
2. Hasan al-Muthallath and Ibrahim; both sons of Hasan al-Muthanna b. Imam Hasan
3. Jafar b. Hasan II b. Imam Hasan
4. Sulayman and Abd Allah; both sons of Dawud b. Hasan al-Muthanna b. Imam Hasan
5. Muhammad, Ismail, and Ishaq; sons of Ibrahim b. Hasan al-Muthanna b. Imam Hasan
6. Abbas b. Hasan al-Muthanna b. Imam Hasan
7. Musa b. Abd Allah b. Hasan al-Muthanna b. Imam Hasan

When they were imprisoned, Ali al-Abid b. Hasan b. Hasan b. Ali was not present.
The following day, a man wrapped in a garment appeared before Rayah who welcomed the man and asked, "What do you want?" The man replied: "I have come so that you can imprison me with my people - it was Ali al-Abid. Rayah proceeded to imprison him with the rest of his family.*

Peace be upon them all. Masters. Imams. People of Allah.

*note: the son of Ali al-Abid is Husayn al-Fakhkhi – the Imam and martyr who was killed in the Battle of Fakhkh in 786 by al-Mansur's forces - I posted about this recently.
