38-Year-Old Record Tumbles As Srinagar Records 2nd Coldest December Night Ever At -8.5°C

‘Chillai-Kalan’ Begins On Freezing Note In Kashmir

Srinagar, Dec 21 (GNS): Mercury plummeted to -8.5°C in Srinagar, the season’s coldest night and the second lowest ever minimum temperature in the summer capital, as Chillai-Kalan’, the 40-day harsh period of winter, started on Saturday.

A meteorological department official here told GNS that Srinagar recorded a drop in temperature by 2.3°C than last night’s 6.2°C which was the previous lowest this season.

According to the records, the previous lowest in 38 years was recorded on 31 December 1986 when mercury plunged to -7.9°C, the MeT official said. The lowest ever temperature was endured on 13 December 1934 when mercury plummeted to -12.8°C, he told Global News Service. In the last decade, Srinagar recorded the previous lowest on 28 December 2018 when mercury plunged to -7.7°C. Kashmir Valley is witnessing one of the worst winters.

Qazigund recorded a minimum of minus 8.2°C against minus 7.6°C on the previous night, he said. Pahalgam recorded a low of minus 8.6°C against minus 8.2°C on the previous night.

Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, recorded a minimum of minus 5.8°C against minus 5.8°C on the previous night

Kupwara town in north Kashmir recorded a low of minus 7.2°C against minus 6.5°C on the previous night, the official said.

Gulmarg, the official said, recorded a low of minus 6.2°C against minus 6.0°C on the previous night.

Jammu, he said, recorded a minimum of 5.4°C, same as on the previous night, and it was below normal by 2.0°C for the winter capital of J&K.

Banihal recorded a low of minus 1.8°C, Batote 1.6°C and Bhaderwah minus 0.4°C, he said.

‘Chillai-Kalan’, the 40-day harsh period of winter, started today and it will end on January 29. However it does not mean an end to the winter. It is followed by a 20-day-long period called ‘Chillai-Khurd’ that occurs between January 30 and February 19 and a 10-day-long period ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold) which is from February 20 to March 1. Advocate Babar Qadri Killing Case: SIA Files chargesheet against Mian Qayoom

Srinagar, December 19(GNS): State Investigation Agency Kashmir today filed a supplementary chargesheet against Mian Abdul Qayoom, Sr. Lawyer and former President High Court Bar Association (HCBA) Kashmir in the much publicized Babar Qadri murder case before the 3rd Addl. Sessions Judge (Special Judge U/S 22 NIA Act) Jammu. Babar Qadri, a promising Srinagar based young lawyer in his late twenties, was gunned down by the terrorists at his residence, Zahidpura (Hawal) Srinagar, on 24.09.2020.

In a handout to GNS, a spokesman for SIA said that briefly stated, Babar Qadri had just returned back home after attending Court on the fateful day that three terrorists visited his house at about 6.30 PM and asked the domestic help for a meeting with him on the pretext of discussing some case. While one of the terrorists waited outside the main gate to keep an eye on the happenings around, the remaining two who were also carrying a dummy case file were made to sit on the chairs placed in the verandah. Soon Babar Qadri came out of the house to meet them and was fired upon minutes later. The terrorists after committing the act fled away from the spot. The badly injured Babar Qadri was shifted to SKIMS Soura, Srinagar but succumbed to his injuries enroute.

Consequent thereupon, Case FIR No.62/2020 U/S 302 IPC 7/27 I A Act 13/16/18/20/39 UAPA was registered at PS Lalbazar Srinagar and investigation was taken up by an SIT framed by IGP Kashmir to be headed by SP Hazratbal. The SIT conducted the investigation and presented the chargesheet against six accused persons on 06.05.2021 before the Special NIA Court, Srinagar, he said.

Thereafter, further investigation in the case U/S 173 (8) CrPC was started on 06.08.2021 by SDPO Zadibal. However on 20.07.2023, PHQ J&K transferred the further investigation of the case from District Police Srinagar to SIA J&K following which the Directorate of SIA J&K framed an SIT which was specifically tasked to unravel the larger conspiracy behind the killing, he said.

The SIT took over the investigation and on the basis of sufficient oral, documentary and technical evidence arrested Mian Qayoom on 25.06.2024 as the principal conspirator behind the deceased’s killing. It was revealed during the in-depth investigation conducted by SIA SIT that Mian Qayoom, who had an inimical relation with the deceased, got Babar Qadri eliminated through terrorists of TRF and their handlers in Pakistan by hatching a criminal conspiracy. TRF is a proxy outfit for the dreaded LeT formed in the aftermath of 5th of August 2019, he said.

Babar Qadri was a very vocal young lawyer who not only questioned Mian Qayoom’s one upmanship at HCBA Kashmir but severely criticized him on multiple occasions for using HCBA Kashmir as a platform for furthering his secessionist agenda. The deceased had also founded a dissident body within the HCBA called Kashmir Lawyers Club which was attracting a sizable number of Young lawyers. Moreover, the deceased was also contemplating to fight the Bar elections against Mian Qayoom which were due to be held around the same time. All this antagonized Mian Qayoom who on several occasions also threatened the deceased.

Although Babar Qadri was very active on social and electronic media which he also used to criticize Mian Qayoom, he had a premonition on the fateful day itself. Interestingly he went live on Facebook on 24.09.2020 afternoon, and while denouncing Mian Qayoom for his polices, also expressed his fears of being eliminated at the hands of Mian Qayoom and his coterie. Ironically, few hours later he was killed in cold blood at his own residence.

Mian Qayoom has a history of being a terrorist sympathizer and diehard secessionist. Several cases already stand registered against him for his anti-national activities. He had earned notoriety for treating HCBA Kashmir as his fiefdom and virtually converting it into a constituent of all party Hurriyat Conference (APHC). During the major unrests post 2008 in Kashmir valley, he was at the forefront of anti-India demonstrations and his calls for shutdowns coincided with the hartal calendars issued by APHC. He was very close to late Syed Ali Shah Geelani whom he regarded as his political guru. He had also declared in open court during High Court proceedings that he neither considered himself as the citizen of India nor believed in the Indian constitution.

The SIA SIT today presented a 340 page long supplementary chargesheet against Mian Qayoom for offences U/S 302/120-B/109 IPC 13/18/18-B/38/39 UAPA. Further investigation in the case U/S 173 (8) shall continue.

The initial chargesheet in the case had been filed before the Special NIA Court Srinagar, however, in December 2023 the High Court had transferred the trial to Jammu taking a serious view of the interference in judicial process by Mian Qayoom as well as threat/ intimidation to the deceased’s family. Mian Qayoom is since then lodged in District Jail Amphalla, Jammu, reads the statement.(GNS)

Ist Death Anniversary

A Year Without You
All love and Peace in Heaven

"Zameen khaa Gayei
Aasmaan kaise kaise"

It's been a year since you left us, and not a day goes by without the ache of your absence. It feels like yesterday when your friends stood with us at your funeral, offering words of comfort. But now, they’ve moved on, while we’re still here—broken, trying to piece together a world without you.

Your friends never look back to see your ailing father and mother whom they promised will be as good as you after your funeral . But unfortunately time proved what u can do no one can. Your mother always look from window when someone opens the door, her never ending pain kills me deep down inside always

Everything has changed since you left. The house is so quiet now, as if it’s mourning too. Mother hasn’t slept properly in a year; the nights are too long, too empty, haunted by memories of you. Father has become a shadow of himself. He tries to be strong, but I see how frail he’s become. Sometimes he whispers that he wishes he could have just a little more time with you, even if it meant trading his own.

Your Hussain still asks about you. He wanted to play with you more, to hear your laugh and feel your hugs. He misses you in ways his little heart can’t even explain. And Hussain say I miss my Mamu, my confidant, my constant. There are so many moments I wish I could share with you, so many things I wish I could hear you say.Hussain always say, Mama "Athar mamu Jannat mai hai Allah kei pass". And without tears in my eyes I never have anything to say.

They say time heals, but for us, time only deepens the void. We tried to keep going, but the weight of your absence is suffocating. If love could have kept you here, you’d still be with us. You were, and always will be, the heartbeat of this family.

After you left, the world didn’t stop, but I did. I thought people would understand my pain, but they didn’t. Some were kind at first, but as time passed, their words grew sharp, their sympathy faded. They moved on so easily, as if you were just a passing moment. The same people who stood by me at your funeral, promising to be there, vanished when I needed them most. Their cruelty stung, but nothing compares to the emptiness of losing you.

I miss your voice, your advice, and the way you always knew how to make me laugh when life felt unbearable. You were my rock, my shield against the world. Without you, I feel so exposed, so vulnerable. There were moments when I felt I couldn’t go on, when the grief was too heavy, and all I wanted was for you to be here to tell me it would be okay.

We miss you, we love you, and we’ll carry you in our hearts forever. Rest peacefully, my brother.

With all love, endless pain, memories
Your's Sister
