पौराणिक कथा के अनुसार, जरासंध द्वारा प्रजा पर होने वाले अत्याचारों को रोकने के लिए भगवान श्री कृष्ण मथुरा को छोड़कर चले गए थे. श्रीकृष्ण ने समुद्र किनारे अपनी एक दिव्य नगरी बसायी. इस नगरी का नाम द्वारका रखा. माना जाता है कि महाभारत के 36 वर्ष बाद द्वारका नगरी समुद्र में डूब गई थी.
