Puddles greet commuters at Ambattur Estate bus terminus

By N Rathi Chithra
The condition of the Ambattur Industrial Estate bus terminus has been a cause of concern for the commuters for quite some time now. The puddles have become a permanent feature at the terminus, especially during the monsoon season. Commuters have been facing a lot of difficulties while entering or exiting the bus terminus. The presence of large potholes around the place has made it almost impossible for the commuters to navigate through the area without getting their shoes and clothes dirty. The women commuters have particularly found it very inconvenient to wade through the puddles.
The problem has only aggravated during the rains as the potholes get filled with rainwater and turn into large, muddy puddles, making it extremely difficult for the commuters to move around. Many commuters have expressed their frustration at the lack of action from the authorities in addressing the issue. They have also complained about the unhygienic conditions that arise due to the puddles, which poses a health risk to the commuters.
“It needs to be noted that the Ambattur Industrial Estate bus terminus caters to the daily commute needs of hundreds of people, many of who work in the various companies and factories located in the vast industrial estate. However, the terminus is an open one and is not a compounded facility,” pointed out a commuter, Hari Ram.
Commuters have called upon the authorities of the Metropolitan Transport Corporation to take steps to ensure that these puddles are cleared and filled with concrete. The Metropolitan Transport Corporation must coordinate with any other civic agency concerned to fill up the potholes.
In response to the complaints from the commuters, the Metropolitan Transport Corporation has assured that they will take necessary measures to address the issue. The officials have stated that they are well aware of the problem and are working on finding a solution to it. They have also urged the commuters to bear with them as they are making every effort to improve the condition of the bus terminus.
While the authorities have promised to address the issue, the commuters are hopeful that the necessary steps will be taken at the earliest. They have emphasised the need for a quick resolution to the problem to ensure the convenience and safety of the commuters, especially during the monsoon season.

Mogappair man looks for weight loss online, falls victim of cyber crime

By Our Correspondent
A resident of Mogappair has approached the police alleging that he had fallen victim to online fraudsters and lost money to them.
For the victim, identified as Mohammad Haniffa, a 54 year old resident of the neighbourhood of Mogappair, the online predators struck when he was browsing the internet looking for tips to lose body weight. According to the complaint filed by Mohammad Haniffa, he had searched online on how to reduce weight. He had reportedly shared his contact mobile number on some websites as well.
“Recently, he received a call from a person who claimed to be a representative of a leading private healthcare company, which offers weight loss solutions. The representative spoke very convincingly to Mohammad Haniffa about the weight loss programme. Later the person at the other end of the phone had asked him to download a mobile application (app) on his phone. After Mohammad Haniffa downloaded the mobile app, the person instructed him to send just a token sum of Rs 5. Within a short time, Mohammad Haniffa was shocked to find that a total of Rs 83,500 was debited from his bank savings account through three transactions, which he did not perform,” said a police officer, who is privy to the complaint which the victim had lodged at the J J Nagar Police Station.
Police officers suspect that the cyber fraudster, who had contacted the victim, had managed to install some malware in Mohammad Haniffa’s mobile phone through the mobile app, which he had unsuspectingly installed and made a transaction for Rs 5. “The malware would have enabled the fraudster to gain access to details of Mohammad Haniffa’s bank account and other information. Using this the accused had managed to transfer Rs 83,500 in three transactions to defraud the victim,” said the officer. “We have registered a case under the provisions of the Information Technology Act, which deals with such cyber crime, and also other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and are undertaking investigations,” the officer added.
“People should not download random mobile apps or share their personal information on random websites as these could be used by cyber fraudsters to cheat them,” he added.

Braving 26 stitches on her forehead, including some deep ones, Anna Nagar's Aarathy Kasturi Raj went on to win an historic bronze medal in the 3000m speed skating relay race at the Asian Games in Hangzhou last week. 29-year-old Aarathy, a doctor by profession, has been skating for more than two decades and this victory is a dream come true.
Her journey to the Asian Games wasn't that easy. She recalls May 26, 2023, when she was sprinting during a practice session, and a little kid came in between, which resulted in her crashing into the railings. This incident resulted in a serious accident, and she had to undergo umpteen stitches and a short period of medical treatment to recover.
Daughter of the Managing Director of a reputed construction company, Firm Foundations Mr C Kasturi Raj and gynaecologist mother Mala Raj in Chennai, Aarathy took to skating at the age of seven and after frequent falls, hard work and determination, she is now an Asian Games medallist.
Following in her mother's footsteps, she has completed MBBS from SRM Medical College in Chennai, and has also done Masters in Clinical Embryology. Having competed in several national and international events, Aarathy has won more than 100 medals.

Parking vehicles outside gates causes concern to Mogappair residents

By Our Correspondent
Parking vehicles outside the gates of independent houses in the Mogappair neighbourhood has become a cause of distress for many residents. The issue arises when random people park cars or bikes outside the main gate, either fully or partially blocking the entry and exit options for the residents. This problem has become particularly acute for those residing near restaurants or doctor's clinics, as the customers and attendants of patients often park their vehicles outside the gates, further blocking access.
One resident, Leslie David, recently took to social media platform X to voice his frustration about the issue. In a post on X, David complained about an unattended vehicle that had been parked outside his gate for several days. He tagged the handle of the Greater Chennai Corporation and shared a photograph to demonstrate the severity of the problem. His post read, "Officers, the unattended vehicle has been parked at our gate for the past few days. Please do the needful. 6th cross street, Bagyathammal Nagar, Mogappair is parked with cars causing difficulty for other four-wheelers to move."
David's complaint resonated with many other residents who have also been dealing with similar issues. When drawn attention to his post by this Correspondent, they expressed their frustration with vehicles that are haphazardly parked outside the gates of their homes, blocking their access.
In response to the growing concerns raised by the residents, many are calling for strict action to be taken against these vehicles. Some residents even suggested impounding such vehicles to help alleviate the issue. They believe that taking this step would serve as a deterrent and discourage people from parking irresponsibly outside the gates of independent houses.

Thirumangalam cops nab history-sheeter at gunpoint

By N Rathi Chithra
In a gripping and daring operation, a notorious 29-year-old history-sheeter, Daniel, who had been on the run for over seven months, was apprehended by a special police team led by Thirumangalam Assistant Commissioner Varadarajan. The dramatic arrest unfolded in Vriddhachalam, located in Cuddalore district, just last week. Daniel, a ‘Category A’ criminal, had a pending arrest warrant issued by the Madras High Court in connection with a murder case from 2019.
According to a senior officer from the City Police, Daniel, a resident of Padikuppam neighbourhood, was infamous for his involvement in two murder cases and eight instances of robbery and g***a smuggling, all within the jurisdiction of the J.J. Nagar Police Station. Notably, he had maintained a close association with Vishwa, who met his end in a police encounter in Kancheepuram district. Determined to evade capture, Daniel had gone underground and was known to be in possession of a sophisticated mobile phone imported from the United States. Despite these hurdles, a specialised police team from Thirumangalam managed to pinpoint his location in Vriddhachalam after diligent surveillance, ultimately leading to his arrest.
Following the arrest, Daniel was promptly transported to the city, where he was taken for investigation at the Nolambur Police station and subsequently lodged in jail.
News of this audacious police operation has sent ripples of excitement among a section of residents of Thirumangalam, Padikuppam, and the surrounding areas. The residents said his capture at gunpoint represents a significant victory for law enforcement.

Raid yields massive 2,100 kgs of banned to***co products in Ambattur

By N Rathi Chithra
In a significant operation carried out by the R.K. Nagar police in a private godown in the Ambattur neighbourhood this past week, a massive seizure of banned to***co products weighing over 2,100 kg took place. Four main dealers involved in the illegal trade were apprehended during the raid on a private godown.
Upon learning about the raid, residents of Ambattur expressed their gratitude to the police for their efforts in combating the sale and distribution of banned to***co products. Ashok Kumar, a resident, applauded the seizure, noting that he had witnessed shops selling these addictive products to even school children. He emphasised the need for further raids and seizures to protect the community, particularly young individuals, from accessing such harmful and addictive substances.
The crackdown on banned to***co products is a result of the directives issued by Additional Commissioner of Police, North, Asra Garg. Special teams, led by police inspectors in North Chennai, have been conducting regular operations to tackle the manufacturing, smuggling, and sale of illegal to***co products.
During Thursday's operation, a team under the supervision of the R.K. Nagar police inspector conducted surveillance near the Ezhil Nagar and Nehru Nagar 6th Street junction of Tondiarpet. "While inspecting an auto rickshaw, two individuals in the vehicle provided evasive responses to the police. A subsequent search of the auto rickshaw led to the discovery of hidden gutkha and other banned to***co products. The two suspects were immediately arrested," a police officer said.
The investigation revealed that the arrested duo, in collaboration with others, had rented a godown in Ambattur. They were stockpiling banned to***co products acquired from neighboring states and distributing them to various shops in the city.
The police apprehended K. Joseph, Gulam Moideen, J. Arunachalam, and C. Raja, aged between 27 and 42. The seizure included 2,176 kg of to***co products, along with C23 lakh in cash, an auto rickshaw, and two motorcycles. The arrested suspects were remanded in judicial custody. The police are on the lookout for another suspect, Sekar.
The successful raid and seizure of such a substantial quantity of banned to***co products underscore the law enforcement's commitment to curbing the illegal trade. These efforts not only aim to protect public health and safety but also deter the availability of addictive substances to vulnerable individuals, particularly children. The authorities continue to prioritise these operations to eradicate the production, smuggling, and sale of banned to***co products and safeguard the well-being of the community. ***co

Dangling cables in Mogappair east and west raise safety concerns

By N Rathi Chithra
The residents of Mogappair East and West are grappling with a persistent issue that threatens their safety - dangling cables. Despite numerous complaints, these hazardous cables continue to dangle perilously in various parts of the neighbourhood, creating a potential hazard for the community.
For many residents, this ongoing issue has reached a breaking point as they express their growing frustration with the lack of action taken to address the problem. The dangling cables not only present an unsightly mess but also pose a real danger, as individuals risk tripping over them.
The most concerning aspect of this issue is that these cables are not limited to obscure areas but can be seen in plain view, even at critical junctures. They are often found strewn along the ground, near road intersections, and adjacent to signboards. This raises concerns about potential accidents, particularly during the night or in poor weather conditions when visibility is reduced.
Local residents have made numerous appeals to the authorities, urging swift action to rectify the situation. They argue that the potential for accidents and injuries is a significant worry, especially for children and the elderly who are more vulnerable to tripping over these cables. Many have had close calls and have had to exercise extreme caution while navigating these areas.
One resident, Lakshmi, expressed her concern, saying, "It's a daily nightmare trying to walk down the street with these cables everywhere. It's not just inconvenient; it's a genuine safety hazard. We need the authorities to take immediate action."
Local officials, however, have been slow to respond to these pleas for intervention. Many residents are puzzled by the lack of action on such a pressing issue. They contend that the authorities have a duty to ensure public safety, and these dangling cables are a direct threat to that safety.
In addition to the safety concerns, the unsightly appearance of these cables has also drawn criticism from residents. They argue that this situation is detrimental to the aesthetic appeal of the neighbourhood and potentially diminishes property values.
The situation is further exacerbated by the fact that these cables often belong to various service providers, including internet, cable television, and telecommunications companies. The lack of coordination between these entities and the authorities has prolonged the problem, leaving residents caught in the middle.

Residents divided over feeding of street dogs in neighbourhoods

By N Rathi Chithra
Opinion is divided in the neighbourhoods of Anna Nagar, Mogappair East and West, and Nolambur, as residents join issue with animal lovers over the feeding of street dogs. While some view it as an act of compassion, others are concerned about the increasing number of strays and the associated public safety risks.
The issue came to the forefront recently when a resident raised concerns about a young individual who regularly feeds street dogs on Nolambur Fourth Main Road. This youth, who does not reside in the locality, brings buckets of food to feed the hungry strays. According to the concerned resident, there are more than 50 dogs on this road, and he claimed that these dogs often chase members of the public, including children.
The resident is now calling upon the Greater Chennai Corporation to take action in resolving this matter. He believes that the well-being of residents and public safety should take precedence over feeding stray dogs on the streets.
However, this issue has sparked a deep divide between animal lovers and local residents. Those advocating for the welfare of street dogs argue that feeding them is an act of kindness and should not be met with opposition. They contend that these dogs are often malnourished and in desperate need of sustenance, and offering food is a humanitarian gesture.
In contrast, some local residents propose a different solution. They suggest that if animal lovers genuinely care about the welfare of stray dogs, they should consider adopting them and providing them with a loving home instead of feeding them on the streets. This, they argue, would reduce the population of strays and eliminate the concerns of stray dogs posing risks to the public.
The debate continues to intensify, with both sides firmly entrenched in their positions. Advocates for feeding street dogs argue that it’s a practical solution given the sheer number of strays in these neighbourhoods and that adoption alone cannot solve the problem. They emphasise that a comprehensive approach is required to address the issue of stray dogs effectively.
On the other hand, residents who are against street dog feeding express their worries about their safety and the potential for diseases spreading. They suggest that feeding dogs on the streets exacerbates the situation and makes the streets unsafe for pedestrians and children.
The Greater Chennai Corporation is now faced with the challenge of finding a harmonious solution that protects both the interests of residents and the welfare of stray dogs in these neighbourhoods.

Call to maintain street signboards in neighbourhood

By Our Correspondent
With quite a few street signboards damaged or uprooted from their positions, a cross-section of residents of Mogappair East, Mogappair West and Anna Nagar have reiterated the call for better maintenance of the boards in the larger interest of the public good.
It has become a common sight to spot street signboards placed by the Greater Chennai Corporation in a rusted, damaged or defaced condition in the neighbourhood. Some of the street signboards, which serve as a crucial guiding link for newcomers to a locality, have been damaged by vehicles which have rammed against them.
“Apart from some of the street signboards being defaced due to sticking of posters or writing of graffiti on them, I find that a few of the signboards get damaged when construction activity is undertaken in their vicinity. This particularly happens when a building is constructed on a plot situated in the corner of the road. The construction material including m-sand, blue metal and cement are dumped near the street signboard and by the time the construction of the building is completed they are partially or fully damaged and no one bothers to replace them. It is such a sorry state of affairs indeed,” laments Alex, a local resident of Nolambur, who works in a showroom that deals in automobiles manufactured by a leading car brand.
Residents said that inspection should be carried out near construction sites to ensure that the materials are not dumped near the street signboards to prevent such occurrences. “Sometimes even iron rods are stored near the street signboards and the workers are engaged in twisting and cutting the bars when they end up accidentally damaging the street signboards as well,” claimed a resident who identified himself as Gurunathan.
Also, residents said that the officials of the Greater Chennai Corporation must undertake periodic inspections to ensure that all the street signboards installed in various places in the Mogappair East, West, Nolambur and Anna Nagar neighbourhoods are in good condition with updated information. “Only then will all streets have functional signboards which serve as a guide to the locality. Otherwise, they will serve no real purpose and people would have to depend on GoogleMaps to make their way through a locality,” said a resident.

Get ready for a change in your Corporation ward

By N Rathi Chithra
Very soon the ward jurisdiction of your locality could change with the Greater Chennai Corporation drawing up an ambitious scheme to redraw its wards and zones. While presently, the entire Greater Chennai is divided into15 zones (such as Ambattur Zone under which Mogappair East and West fall and Anna Nagar Zone), under the proposed scheme the city could have as many as 23 zones. Consequently, the wards that are presently located in certain zones could be shifted.
This would be the second time in a decade that the boundaries of wards and zones are being revisited in the capital city of Tamil Nadu. Prior to 2011, the Greater Chennai Corporation had only 100 wards and areas such as Mogappair East, Mogappair West and parts of Thirumangalam were not part of it. In fact, back then these areas came under the jurisdiction of the Ambattur Municipality. Only in 2011, when the city was expanded, the Ambattur Municipality and a few other local bodies in the suburban areas were merged with Greater Chennai Corporation and the number of wards were increased to 155.
Once the expanded zones are notified, the Ambattur Zone will have 13 wards. When that happens, Mogappair will no longer be part of the Ambattur Zone. Instead it will be shifted to the jurisdiction of the proposed Maduravoyal Zone, which will have 15 wards. Incidentally, the Maduravoyal Zone would share the second slot with Madhavaram Zone in terms of wards under their jurisdiction. Only the Thiruvottiyur Zone in North Chennai, will have more wards (18) in its jurisdiction.
The reclassification would mean that residents of Mogappair would have to go to the Maduravoyal Zone office of the GCC to get their grievances redressed instead of the Ambattur Zonal office. Also, some of the streets which are presently in a particular ward and zone could be shifted to another ward or zone. Curiously some of the major roads in the neighbourhood have been proposed to be divided under different zones. Residents said that there should be wider consultation on the process before it is notified so that the views of stakeholders could be taken into account.

Metrowater work must be completed early, say residents

By N Rathi Chithra
With the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB or Metrowater in common parlance) undertaking various works in different parts of Anna Nagar and Mogappair, residents of these areas have called for early completion of the projects.
The contractors engaged by the Metrowater have dug up a part of the road in some places as part of executing the ongoing projects. Consequently, residents complained that driving on the road has become difficult due to the obstructions.
For instance, on East Main Road in Anna Nagar, the Metrowater is executing a project in the area for augmenting the capacity of the sewer lines. According to residents, work on this project had commenced sometime last year itself. However, still the work has not been completed. One of the residents of the area, who did not wish to be identified, claimed that the progress of work has been slower. “They should have completed this project much earlier. However, work is still on and the roads have been dug up. The East Main Road is a crucial link road in this part of Anna Nagar and the improper roads have made lives for us difficult over the past many months,” the resident lamented.
Some of the residents of the locality complained that during rains the road becomes slushy and difficult to traverse. “At least temporarily the road, on the stretch where work has been completed, could be relaid and we can have a firm structure when the Metrowater work is completely executed,” a resident said.
Likewise Metrowater work is going on the key stretch of the Thirumangalam-Mogappair Road, which is a high traffic density area. “The sooner the Metrowater completes the work, the better for traffic flow on this key road, where thousands of motorcycles, cars, auto rickshaws and heavy vehicles pass by regularly,” said Vasudevan, a motorist.
However, when contacted, an official of the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board, said that the workers were engaged in work overtime to complete the ongoing projects. “The intention is to complete the projects as early as possible. We will leave no stone unturned to achieve this,” the official insisted.
