We are thrilled to present two new additions to an ever enlarging corpus of Goan Portuguese texts that have been translated into English.

Weeds in the Red Dust: The Collected Stories of Epitácio Pais ranges across a Goa shaken up in the 1950s, 60s and 70s by mining and tourism, regime change and deep social shifts. These stories provide a compelling patchwork account of a region facing breakneck change and many old problems.

Originally published in Portuguese in 1987 as Contos Regionais, Regional Tales, Augusto do Rosário Rodrigues’ collection of short stories are, by turns, satirical, sentimental, comic and melodramatic, stretching from the author’s present day back to the eighteenth century.

Both texts are translated by Paul Melo E Castro.

These books are published by our CinnamonTeal Publishing and are available at The Dogears Bookshop. We ship everywhere.

As we approach our 18th anniversary, we showcase a selection of our books.

The Vanishing Stripes, by Jai Mohan and Akash Mohan, provides a keen insight as to why these man-animal conflicts happen and what we, as a worldwide community, can do to decrease their tragic occurrence. Through anecdotal tales, the authors also provide tips and tricks for understanding basic wildlife behavior, from alarm calls to eating habits, thus preparing readers for their own personal encounters in the wild.

We are proud to announce this book, published through our translation imprint, Under the Peepal Tree.

Between the Lines and Other Stories is a collection of short stories by Ash*ta, one of Malayalam's finest women writers. She is widely recognized as an author who initiated themes which came to be handled in bolder and more politicized terms by explicitly anti-patriarchal writing in Malayalam in the 1990s and thereafter. Ash*ta's stories are unique for their extreme economy of words that communicate brilliantly the claustrophobic nature of confined domestic spaces in which educated women in Kerala found themselves, from which there was seemingly no escape. Her writing does not merely talk about the oppressiveness of confinement, rather it communicates the experience of silence, repression, and sheer boredom, and transports the reader into that dark, still world within the four walls of the respectable middle-class home in which everyone was expected to be happy and contended.

The book is translated from the original Malayalam by Devika J

A review of A Small Tree of Tender Leaves in the Blithe Spirits journal.

K. Ramesh is one of those quiet, steady voices in the haiku world, whose quality is constant, whose spirituality is palpable – the sort of voice that would have appealed to Chiyo-ni of Kaga, the nun who wrote about the morning glory taking the well bucket. Being a South Indian and working among poor people as a science teacher at a Krishnamurti Foundation school, his third collection of haiku is brimming with compassionate portraits of other humans going about their daily work in a dignified way, and its images of country living are not so very far away from those of Edo Period Japanese haiku. Yet, this is India in the 21st Century. To me, this is highly captivating. As a reader, I want to walk with Ramesh as he makes his village rounds, recording the beauty and the hardship of life, the faces of animals, the power cuts, the light and weather, the little things – ants, teacups, earrings, pebbles, feathers, children, calves. I want to travel with Ramesh, too, as he visits towns, boards buses, sits in hotel rooms.

There is no narrative line, and a haibun or two to connect up certain of the haiku might have served to break up the slight monotony of one haiku after another. No separate sequences, either. But the whole feels like a journey, as we scroll down through the digital book, treading through sights and sounds, always aware that there is poetic significance in every step.

A number of years ago, I visited Ramesh in Chennai and we walked, talked, composed, read aloud, and had a bite of ancient Chola breads made from wholemeal millet. Throughout, his humility and his utter sincerity with regard to haiku made an impression on me. It shines out now for all to see in his newly planted ‘small tree of tender leaves’. Fine work!

Over the past few years, we have worked with many institutions to develop printed editions of their conference proceedings, edited papers, and even course curriculum. Last week we successfully published two volumes of conference proceedings organized by the Department of Education at the Azim Premji University.
