The Fishing community based in Kharewado and other parts of Vasco on Saturday morning celebrated the feast of St Peter and St Paul also known as " Sangodd " in a traditional way with religious fervour and gaiety.
The feast marks the blessing of the sea as well as the boats of the Fishermen for the new fishing season
because it is believed that St Peter is the patron of fishermen and was one of the apostles of Jesus and a fisherman himself
At Kharewado, the fishermen celebrated the feast of St Peter and St Paul and marked the day with prayers to the saints to bless the sea, their equipment and their lives in the course of their occupation.
The priest conducted solemn prayers and showered holy water followed by Litany with the gathered fishermen.
According to All Goa Fishing Boat Owners Association President Jose Philip D'Souza the feast began with the offering of prayers and religious service at the Old Cross Chapel at Kharewado by the priest in the presence of a large number of fishermen
" The priest then in a procession amidst religious hymns carried the idol of St Peter from the Chapel to Kharewado fishing jetty where another prayers were offered at the Chapel on the jetty before the priest went on beautifully decorated fishing boats with colourful balloons, coconut palms, flowers and other decorative items and ventured forth into the Arabian Sea as part of their annual tradition. The priest also called upon Almighty God and St Peter to protect the fishermen when they venture in the high seas for fishing activity " said D'Souza

**South Goa MP Captain Viriato Fernandes Heads to Delhi for Oath Taking Ceremony**

**Delhi, June 22, 2024** – Captain Viriato Fernandes, the newly elected Member of Parliament from South Goa, has left for Delhi ahead of his oath-taking ceremony scheduled for Monday. In a strong statement prior to his departure, Fernandes criticized the potential closure of Dabolim Airport, arguing that it would primarily benefit "chronic capitalists and private companies" such as GMR, which operates the newly inaugurated MOPA Airport.

Fernandes expressed deep concerns over several local issues, emphasizing his commitment to fighting for the rights of Goans. "The six rivers we need to reclaim are being nationalized," he stated, highlighting the adverse impacts of such actions on local communities. Additionally, Fernandes vowed to address the contentious issues surrounding Goa's 105 km coastal belt, currently under the control of the Mormugao Port Authority (MPA).

The MP also criticized ongoing infrastructure projects, including double tracking, road expansion, and the Tamnar power project. He labeled the Tamnar project as a "big lie" and a "fraud," pointing out that Goa currently has a 40% power surplus. "This project is not for the common people of Goa," Fernandes asserted, suggesting it serves other interests.

Fernandes' remarks underline his dedication to protecting Goa's natural resources and ensuring that development projects benefit the local population rather than external interests. His upcoming tenure in parliament is expected to be marked by vigorous advocacy on these critical issues.

Mam jumps to death off Kharewado fishing Jetty

In a tragic incident, a man jumped off into the sea from the tail end of the Kharewado fishing Jetty on Thursday evening
According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred at around 6.30 pm
" There were many people in the jetty and some were angling on the jetty. The people saw a man wall towards the tail point of the jetty that goes towards the Mormugao Port berth no 11. While many were wondering why the man was walking to the isolated area, the man suddenly went to the extreme point to probably jump in the water . We immediately began shouting and calling him but he refused to hear and just jumped in the sea . When he fell in the water, a worker of a nearby parked fishing boat threw a rope at him but he refused to take help and folded his hands . While he was struggling in the water, we called him but he refused to move towards safety and drowned in the sea" said an eyewitness
The locals immediately alerted the Fire Brigade, the Port authorities and the Coastal Police about the incident
" In barely a few minutes, he drowned and his body began floating in the sea. The port CISF launch reached the site but refused to touch the floating body . We requested the CISF launch to offer assistance in preventing the body from drifting further but they refused to co-operate. The fire authorities also requested the CISF launch to hold on to the body by using a rope but they did not agree to do anything. The body moved towards the launch and drifted into the deep sea right in front of them. We then requested the Coastal police to use their launch to retreive the body but their launch was on patrolling duty at Cortalim . By the time , the coastal police launch arrived , it was already dark and the body had already drifted in the sea " said the local " said the eyewitness
" What is the point of the CISF launch simply burning fuel of the Government,if they don't intend to help during an emergency? This launch only harasses local fishermen in the sea and the authorities must initiate action on the CISF launch and the people on duty " said the eyewitness
However later in the evening, the Coastal police patrolling launch arrived at the jetty and ventured in the sea along with fire brigade officials to retrieve the body
Till late evening , the body had been retreived but the details of the person who ended his life by jumping in the sea was unclear
