Worlds largest invasion- Allied forces attack Nazi German forces- Normandy -D-day landing-Utah Beach
Normandy is 225 kms from Paris, (around 2.30 hrs drive)
D-Day - 6 June 1944 - was the largest amphibious invasion in the history of warfare. The statistics of D-Day, codenamed Operation Overlord, are staggering. The Allies used over 5,000 ships and landing craft to land more than 150,000 troops on five beaches in Normandy. The landings marked the start of a long and costly campaign in north-west Europe, which ultimately convinced the German high command that defeat was inevitable.
1. D-Day was the start of Operation 'Overlord'
On D-Day, 6 June 1944, Allied forces launched a combined naval, air and land assault on Nazi-occupied France. The 'D' in D-Day stands simply for 'day' and the term was used to describe the first day of any large military operation.
Early on 6 June, Allied airborne forces parachuted into drop zones across northern France. Ground troops then landed across five assault beaches - Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword. By the end of the day, the Allies had established a foothold along the coast and could begin their advance into France.
2. 'Overlord' opened the long-awaited second front against Germany
The defeat of Germany was acknowledged as the western Allies’ principal war aim as early as December 1941. Opening a second front would relieve pressure on the Soviet Union in the east and the liberation of France would weaken Germany’s overall position in western Europe. The invasion, if successful, would drain German resources and block access to key military sites. Securing a bridgehead in Normandy would allow the Allies to establish a viable presence in northern Europe for the first time since the Allied evacuation from Dunkirk in 1940.
3. D-Day required detailed planning
Lieutenant-General Frederick Morgan and his team of British, American and Canadian officers submitted plans for the invasion in July 1943. Although limited planning for an invasion of Europe began soon after the evacuation of Dunkirk in 1940, detailed preparations for Ope

A trip to this best Paris Flea Market is an experience not to be forgotten.
A trip to this best Paris Flea Market is an experience not to be forgotten.
Brocantes, vide-greniers, and marché aux puces are essential to French culture.
For the permanent flea markets, flea market days are typically as follows: Saturdays and Sundays, as well as Fridays and/ or Mondays (depending on what market you visit!) For pop up markets, the days of the week are more varied, but are also usually held on weekends.
Some of the busier markets also provide a great cover for pickpockets and so be wary of your belongings at all times, especially when you open your bag to get out your wallet to purchase things.
Le Marché aux Puces de Saint-Ouen, which is often abbreviated to be referred to as just St-Ouen is the largest flea market in the World and is easily one of the best flea markets in Paris (well, technically, the market is actually just outside the Paris Periphérique)!
Like many markets featured on this list, many of the vendors at the Saint Ouen market are only open on the weekends. Please note that this is the only permanent set of markets in Paris, and the prices are elevated accordingly to its popularity.
Welcoming 3,000 traders and up to 180,000 visitors each weekend, the Marché aux Puces de St-Ouen is generally thought to be the biggest ‘flea market’ in the world. If that conjures up images of a sprawling field filled with broken bed frames and sofas with the stuffing coming out, you’re in for a surprise. The fleas left long ago, and since 1885 what started as a rag-and-bone shantytown outside the city limits has been organised into a series of enclosed villages, some entirely covered and others with open-air streets and covered boutiques for the antiques dealers.
You’ll find pretty much everything, from vintage clothes and toys to old cutlery, 1940s light-fittings, furniture and antique glassware.
