ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥
Shalok, First Mehl:
ਸਲੋਕ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ।

ਸੀਹਾ ਬਾਜਾ ਚਰਗਾ ਕੁਹੀਆ ਏਨਾ ਖਵਾਲੇ ਘਾਹ ॥
Tigers, hawks, falcons and eagles-the Lord could make them eat grass.
ਸ਼ੇਰਾਂ, ਬਾਜਾਂ, ਇੱਲਾਂ ਤੇ ਬਹਿਰੀਆਂ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਰੱਬ ਘਾਹ ਖੁਆ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਘਾਹੁ ਖਾਨਿ ਤਿਨਾ ਮਾਸੁ ਖਵਾਲੇ ਏਹਿ ਚਲਾਏ ਰਾਹ ॥
And those animals which eat grass-He could make them eat meat. He could make them follow this way of life.
ਜੋ ਘਾਹ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਗੋਸਤ ਖੁਆ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਮਾਰਗ ਉਹ ਜਾਰੀ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਨਦੀਆ ਵਿਚਿ ਟਿਬੇ ਦੇਖਾਲੇ ਥਲੀ ਕਰੇ ਅਸਗਾਹ ॥
He could raise dry land from the rivers, and turn the deserts into bottomless oceans.
ਉਹ ਦਰਿਆਵਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਉਚੇ ਟਿੱਲੇ ਵਿਖਾਲ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਅਤੇ ਰੇਗਿਸਤਾਨ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਅਥਾਹ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਬਣਾ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਕੀੜਾ ਥਾਪਿ ਦੇਇ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੀ ਲਸਕਰ ਕਰੇ ਸੁਆਹ ॥
He could appoint a worm as king, and reduce an army to ashes.
ਇੱਕ ਕੀੜੇ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਬਾਦਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਦੇ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਭਾਰੀ ਫੌਜ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਰਾਖ ਬਣਾ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਜੇਤੇ ਜੀਅ ਜੀਵਹਿ ਲੈ ਸਾਹਾ ਜੀਵਾਲੇ ਤਾ ਕਿ ਅਸਾਹ ॥
All beings and creatures live by breathing, but He could keep us alive, even without the breath.
ਸਾਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣਧਾਰੀ ਸਵਾਸ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਜਿਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਜੇਕਰ ਓਹ ਚਾਹਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਸੁਆਸਾਂ ਦੇ ਵੀ ਜਿਉਂਦਾ ਰੱਖ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ॥

ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਉ ਜਿਉ ਸਚੇ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਉ ਤਿਉ ਦੇਇ ਗਿਰਾਹ ॥੧॥
O Nanak! As it pleases the True Lord, He gives us sustenance. ||1||
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸੱਚੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਹੀ ਊਹ ਰੋਜੀ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ

Sikh History of 2nd January 1741

Massa Ranghar, also known as Masar Chand, is a historically significant figure in Sikh history, remembered for his role as a Mughal collaborator and his subsequent punishment by the Sikh community for his desecration of sacred spaces. His story is tied to the resilience and determination of the Sikhs during the 18th century, a time of intense persecution under Mughal rule.

Background
Massa Ranghar was appointed as the ruler (or caretaker) of Amritsar by the Mughal authorities after they managed to suppress Sikh resistance temporarily. During this period, the Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib), the holiest shrine of the Sikhs, became a target of Mughal attempts to demoralize the Sikh community. Massa Ranghar was notorious for his oppressive policies and disregard for Sikh religious sentiments.

Desecration of the Golden Temple
Massa Ranghar desecrated the Golden Temple by converting it into a venue for his personal indulgences. Historical accounts describe how he used the sacred space to host parties, drink alcohol, and dance to entertainment, actions that deeply insulted the Sikh faith. His actions outraged the Sikh community, which was then scattered and operating as guerrilla fighters to resist Mughal oppression.

The Sikh Response
The Sikh leaders resolved to avenge the desecration. Sukha Singh and Mehtab Singh, two brave and devout Sikh warriors, took it upon themselves to eliminate Massa Ranghar. Disguising themselves as tax collectors, they entered the Golden Temple under the pretext of delivering revenue.

Once inside, Sukha Singh and Mehtab Singh confronted Massa Ranghar in the Golden Temple. They beheaded him on the spot, avenging his actions and sending a strong message to the oppressors. This act not only restored the sanctity of the Golden Temple but also reinvigorated the spirit of the Sikh resistance.

Significance
The episode of Massa Ranghar’s punishment is celebrated as a turning point in Sikh history, symbolizing the community's unwavering commitment to justice, faith, and the defense of their religious and cultural identity. It is remembered as an example of the Sikh tradition of standing against tyranny and preserving the sanctity of their institutions.

This event is often recounted in Sikh historical texts and oral traditions as an inspiring example of courage and dedication to faith.
