In the latest push to self-reliance in Defence, India on Monday cleared the purchase of indigenous military hardware worth Rs 76,390 crore to sharpen combat capabilities with next-generation warships, wheeled armoured fighting vehicles with anti-tank guided missiles, radars to locate weapons and tanks to lay bridges, the Indian Ministry of Defence announced.

The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) – India's apex procurement body – accorded its acceptance of necessity (AoN) for the capital acquisition proposals. Under India's Defence procurement rules, AoN by the council, headed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, is the first step towards buying military hardware.

The proposals have been approved by DAC under acquisition categories that seek to promote self-reliance in defence manufacturing. "This will provide substantial boost to the Indian defence industry and reduce foreign spending significantly," the Ministry said.

Next-generation corvettes for the navy will cost around Rs 36,000 crore and will be used for surveillance missions, es**rt operations, search and attack, deterrence, and coastal defence, officials said.

"These corvettes will be based on a new in-house design of the Indian Navy using latest technology, and would contribute to further the government’s initiative of SAGAR (Security and Growth for all in the Region)," the ministry said. Other proposals cleared by DAC include the procurement of additional Dornier aircraft, Suk-hoi-30 plane engines and a project for digitisation in the Coast Guard.

India has imposed a phased ban on the import of 310 types of weapons and systems, including next-generation corvettes, in the past two years to boost self-reliance.

The military hardware sought to be indigenised covers lightweight tanks, naval utility helicopters, artillery guns, missiles, loitering munitions, missile destroyers, ship-borne cruise missiles, light combat aircraft, light transport aircraft, long-range land attack cruise missiles, basic trainer aircraft, multi-barrel rocket launchers, assault rifles, sniper rifles, specified types of helicopters, and airborne early warning and control systems.

The war in Ukraine has exposed India's overwhelming dependence on imported weaponry, especially from Russia, and India's military and strategic planners are grappling with issues such as how the war could affect the country's military readiness, alternatives for sourcing military hardware and speeding up the indigenisation drive to become self-reliant.

The chief takeaways from the Russia-Ukraine conflict include the urgent need for diversification of weapon purchases, maximum possible indigenisation of spares and subsystems to keep Russian-origin equipment serviceable, and, most importantly, staying focused on achieving atmanirbharta (self-reliance) to meet India’s growing defence needs. | Via. Russia lost nearly 25000 troops since its invasion on Ukraine began on 24 February, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said in its tweet on Friday. The claim by the Pro-US, Pro-NATO Ukrainian Government comes amid the 72nd day of war between the two neighbours.

According to the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, Moscow has lost 24,900 troops, 1,110 tanks and 199 aircraft in its war against the eastern European country. The Russian Armed forces have also lost 155 Helicopters 2,686 armoured personnel vehicle, 502 artillery systems among others.

The Ukrainian Government further claims that the Russian forces have lost more than 1,900 vehicles and fuel tanks in what they call a ‘military operation’ in Ukraine.

However, ferocious fighting continues in battleground Ukraine for the 72nd day. Russian forces in Ukraine's port of Mariupol continued their ground assault on the Azovstal steel plant for a second day, Reuters quoted the British military intelligence.

Russia's Defence Ministry said its missiles destroyed a large ammunition depot in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kramatorsk. It also said its air defences shot down two Ukrainian warplanes, an Su-25 and a MiG-29, in the eastern Luhansk region.

In a recent development, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on Friday that there was hostile rhetoric coming out of Poland, and that Warsaw could be "a source of threat".

Poland has led calls for the EU to toughen sanctions and for the Western NATO alliance to arm Ukraine as it tries to resist Russian forces that have poured into its east. Polish Environment and Climate Minister Anna Moskwa said on Monday that "Poland is proud to be on Putin's list of unfriendly countries." (With Reuters Inputs) | Via. Bengal Newz World

"Indira Gandhi had a specific war aim in 1971- the creation of Bangladesh as an independent sovereign nation. So India's military resources were focused on a swift and hard military campaign in the east. Concentration, not dissipation, of forces is critical to a military offensive. If Gen.Sam Manekshaw had deployed his forces for two offensive campaigns in 1971 - to liberate Bangladesh and retake PoK - he would have achieved neither. Unlike in East Pakistan, there was no guerrilla force in PoK waiting to welcome the Indian army as liberators. Pakistani defences in PoK were infinitely stronger and a campaign there may have even provoked Chinese intervention. The Chinese were already reconciled to the loss of East Pakistan because they had read the writing on the wall. PoK is too close to China and would have possibly provoked a response from Beijing which was not the case with Bangladesh. So despite Henry Kissinger’s best efforts, Beijing did not jump into the fray, realizing the snow had already choked up the Himalayan passes."

Germany will authorize the delivery of tanks to Ukraine, Defence Minister Christine Lambrecht said on Tuesday, in what would be a clear switch in Berlin's cautious policy on military backing for Kyiv.

The German Government has agreed to sign off the delivery of used Gepard anti-aircraft tanks, Lambrecht told an international meeting of defence ministers at the US Ramstein Air Base, according to a copy of her speech seen by AFP.

Forty countries are holding emergency talks at the airbase in southwestern Germany on bolstering the defence capabilities of Ukraine.

The meeting, held at the invitation of the United States, is "focused on doing things to generate additional capability and capacity for the Ukrainian forces," according to US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.

France is delivering Caesar cannons with a range of 40 kilometres and Britain has provided Starstreak anti-air missiles and tanks.

The Gepard tanks will not come from the German army but from stocks held by the Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) arms group, Government sources told AFP.

They were taken out of service 10 years ago and need to be technically upgraded, the sources said.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has come under fire for refusing to directly send heavy weapons to Ukraine, despite announcing a "turning point" in German defence policy in response to the war.

Critics have accused Scholz of weak leadership and say his Social Democrats (SPD) are too reluctant to break from their historic policy of detente towards Moscow.

Scholz has even faced criticism from within his own coalition Government, a partnership between the SPD, the Greens and the liberal FDP.

The chancellor has justified his cautious approach by saying he wishes to avoid a direct confrontation between Nato and Russia, a nuclear power.

But according to a draft document seen by AFP on Tuesday, the three coalition parties now plan to present a joint proposal in parliament calling for the delivery of heavy weapons to Ukraine.

The document calls on the Government to "continue and, where possible, accelerate the delivery of necessary equipment to Ukraine, including extending the delivery of heavy weapons and complex systems."

It also suggests that Ukrainian soldiers should be trained in Germany and other Nato countries to operate the weaponry. (AFP)

The Indian Air Force and the Indian Navy have tied up with the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) to get the CHAFF technology, which protects the warship from an anti-ship missile during hostilities. India is now the second country after the United States to develop this ability, a major Aatmanirbhar push in the field of defence.

The developed assumes significance as the Indian Navy is currently studying the sinking of Russian missile cruiser Moskva and focusing on how to protect our warships from anti-ship ballistic missiles like the Chinese DF-21.

● What is CHAFF?

In simple words, CHAFF is a critical defence technology used to protect fighter aircrafts or naval ships from enemy radar-guided missile during war. The significance of this technology lies in the fact that very less quantity of CHAFF material deployed in the air acts as a decoy to deflect enemy's missiles to ensure safety of the fighter aircraft or naval ships.

CHAFF creates a metal particle cloud near the warship and deflects the missiles from it.

The DRDO has developed this advanced CHAFF technology to defend naval Ships and fighter aircrafts against modern day broadband (including high frequency) radar threat.

Developed by the DRDO, the technology includes all three variants of CHAFF rockets namely Short Range Chaff Rocket (SRCR), Medium Range Chaff Rocket (MRCR) and Long Range Chaff Rocket (LRCR), and have been inducted in the Indian Navy after successful user trials.

The DRDO has also developed advanced CHAFF cartridge-118/I for the Indian Air Force having major advantages over the chaff available worldwide in terms of its better efficacy against higher frequency radar threat in modern warfare scenario.

After a successfully extensive user trials, the IAF assessed the performance of indigenous chaff cartridge-118/I satisfactory and started the process of induction into Indian Air Force. | Bengal Newz India

India on Monday successfully test-fired a locally developed Anti-Tank Guided Missile (ATGM), Helina, from the Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) at high altitude, paving the way for the weapon's integration with the Helicopter, the Ministry of Defence, Government of India said on Monday.

The latest test came on the back of a series of trials conducted at the Pokhran firing range in Rajathan.

Helina or Helicopter-based Nag Missile, can strike targets up to seven km away.

The fire-and-forget Missile, guided by an infrared imaging seeker system, successfully engaged a simulated Tank target at high-altitude ranges, the Defence Ministry said in a statement. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Indian Air Force and the Indian Army jointly conducted the test.

According to DRDO, the Helina system has all-weather day and night capability and can knock out enemy Tanks with conventional and explosive reactive armour. The Missile can engage targets both in direct hit mode as well as the top attack mode.

"In continuation to validation trials conducted at Pokhran, the proof of efficacy at high altitudes paves the way for its integration on ALH," the Ministry said.

"The successful test demonstrates our indigenous weapon building prowess. Now the focus should be on integrating the Missile on the Helicopter, production and operationalisation of the weapon in the armed forces," said Air Vice Marshal Anil Golani (retd), additional director general, Centre for Air Power Studies.

Helicopter launched Anti-Tank Guided Missiles figure on the list of weapons and systems that the Government has put under an import ban to boost self-reliance in the Defence Manufacturing sector.

In a renewed push for self-reliance in Defence, India last week published a new list of 101 weapons and systems that will come under a phased import ban over the next five years. The Military Hardware sought to be developed locally ranges from Lightweight Tanks, Naval Utility Helicopters and mounted Artillery Gun systems to medium-altitude long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicles, Missiles and loitering munitions.

The new list has taken the combined number of weapons and systems under a phased import ban by India to 310. Two similar lists of 101 and 108 weapons and systems were released in August 2020 and May 2021, respectively. Helicopter launched ATGMs figured in the 'second positive indigenisation' list and their import was banned from December 2021.

The latest Helina test came four months after India successfully tested the Helicopter launched stand-off anti-tank (SANT) Missile, which has a range of 10 km.

IAF's Russian-origin Mi-35 attack Helicopters are expected to be equipped with the Missile to arm them with the capability to destroy enemy Tanks from an improved stand-off range. The existing Russian-origin Shturm Missile on the Mi-35 can target Tanks at a range of five km.

Nag and Helina are the existing Anti-Tank Missiles developed by DRDO. The Nag Missile is launched from a modified infantry combat vehicle, called the Nag Missile carrier or Namica. | Via. Bengal Newz India

Ministry of Defense of Ukraine says another Russian General, Lt Gen Yakov Rezantsev, was killed in a strike near the southern city of Kherson.

Rezantsev was the commander of Russia's 49th combined army.

A western official said he was the seventh General to die in Ukraine, and the second lieutenant general - the highest rank officer reportedly killed.

It is thought that low morale among Russian troops has forced senior officers closer to the front line.

In a conversation intercepted by the Ukrainian Military, a Russian soldier complained that Rezantsev had claimed the war would be over within hours, just four days after it began.

Ukrainian media reported on Friday that the General was killed at the Chornobaivka Airbase near Kherson, which Russia is using as a command post and has been attacked by Ukraine's Military several times.

Another Lieutenant General, Andrei Mordvichev, was reportedly killed by a Ukrainian strike on the same base. (BBC)

A Pakistan Air Force (PAF) trainer aircraft crashed on Tuesday while on a training mission in the country's northwest, killing the two pilots on board, a spokesman for the Air Force said.

"The trainer aircraft has crashed near Peshawar, during a routine training mission," a statement issued by the Air Force said. No loss of life or property was reported on the ground.

A board of inquiry has been ordered by the Air Headquarters to determine the cause of the incident, the statement added.

Pakistan's armed forces have suffered several air accidents in recent years. A crash killed a female jet pilot in another training exercise in November 2015.

In May 2015, a military helicopter carrying diplomats to inspect a tourism project crashed, killing seven people, including the ambassadors of Norway and the Philippines.

Another Military Helicopter being used as an air ambulance crashed in August 2015 near the Northern District of Mansehra, killing 12 people. | Bengal Newz World

North Korea fired an "unknown projectile" on Wednesday which appeared to fail immediately after launch, South Korea's Military said after Japanese media reported a suspected Missile launch by the nuclear-armed North.

The suspected Missile was fired from an airfield outside the North Korean capital of Pyongyang, South Korea's Defence Ministry said in a statement.

The airfield has been the site of several recent launches, including two of what the United States and South Korea said were tests of a new intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) system. North Korea said those tests were for developing components of a reconnaissance Satellite.

A source at Japan's Ministry of Defence called the projectile a potential Ballistic Missile, Japanese public broadcaster NHK reported.

Reclusive North Korea has fired Missiles at an unprecedented frequency this year, conducting its ninth weapons test on 5 March, drawing condemnation from the United States, South Korea and Japan.

North Korea used what would be its largest Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) system in two recent launches, and appears to be restoring some tunnels at its shuttered nuclear test site, US and South Korean officials said last week. (Reuters) | Via. Bengal Newz World

Iran's Revolutionary Guard has launched a second satellite into orbit, according to state media. The US has alleged Iran's satellite launches defy a UN Security Council resolution.

The Iranian Noor-2 satellite has reached a low orbit on the Ghased satellite carrier, state media reported on Tuesday.

The launch comes as world powers await Tehran's decision over the country's nuclear deal.

📌 Why is this launch important?

Placing a second satellite in space orbit would represent a major step for Iran's military, and would raise concerns about Tehran's nuclear and missile programs.

"Iran's second military satellite, named Noor-2, has been launched into space by the Qassed rocket of the aerospace wing of the Revolutionary Guards and successfully placed in orbit 500 kilometers (310 miles) above the Earth," the official Irna News-Agency reported.

The US claims that Iran's satellite launches breach a UN Security Council resolution. It has called on Tehran not to undertake any activity related to ballistic missiles capable of delivering nuclear weapons.

No pictures of the latest launch or satellite were initially released. The first Nour satellite, the name meaning "light," was launched by Iran in April 2020. (Deutsche Welle) | Via. Bengal Newz World
