The Motorcycle Diaries (2004)
Director- Walter Salles

Based on Ernesto Che Guevara's novel The Motorcycle Diaries, is a coming-of-age film that revolves around his trip through South America with his friend that makes him witness the class division and destitution in the continent. The trip also plants the initial seed of cognitive dissonance and radicalisation within Guevara, who ostensibly would later view armed revolution as a way to challenge the continent's endemic economic inequalities and political repression.

|| A Paradise || - Aratrika Bhattacharya

I remember the sound of the rain that evening, while sitting in his room and smoking the remaining ci******es, we heard the rain instead of Kurt Cobain. It had a melodious tune, typical of Kolkata’r Kalboisakhi, the steady patter with the wind howling in phases.

He had held my hand for a moment in the darkness amongst the tune of the rain. His skin damp from the rain drops he was catching, cold against my soft skin, his fingertips hard from playing the guitar. I wanted to hear him play some Cobain for me, but he always played blues. Amongst the damp smell of earth and the darkness from the night, he played me music of the land afar. Sometimes he'd roll me a joint, but he would never smoke it with me. He was weird, 'God' he called himself. He talked about lands I hadn't heard of, where money wasn't the driving force, a mysterious land where it was okay to love and trust everyone in the most literal sense and that was..... Natural? He told me he came from afar, a land he called paradise.

He met me in the bar I went to every night to drink away my misery. He told me that when the rain stopped that night, he would leave town. Somewhere from between the sheets, I asked to the stranger in the dark ‘Where will you go?’ he softly told ‘Somewhere where the rain never stops’.

|| I, Death || - Aritra Dutta Gupta

I, death. The mortals count time and that round thing says it's 3:00. Time corroding with each stroke and there lie they. The room reeks of silence torn by crickets, ticking of clock and rustling of trees. The kid wrapped in the arms of the girl as if to impede me. Will she stop me? Will I be able to break him from her arms or fro her smell, and tear him of his flesh? She'll cry, her gut will wrench and then she will faint until someone comes, or else I will have to come again to take her. No one will stop me then.
Another sound pokes the silence, the clap of bare feet.

I, father. The clock at 3:01. My son, he will be brought to me soon. But I wish he could have stayed, curled in the girl's arm, his face on her bosom and her chin on his head. He cried today and she shut him off, then they took that thing and dozed off. Why they take it? Death stands there with his dead eyes fixed at my son. When my son was a kid I used to tell him lies; lies of happiness. He believed me, thought life was beautiful and coveted to grow up, but I knew once he grows up he will be as melancholy as I am.

I, death. The clock has changed its face. It's 3:02. There stands his father. I remember taking him as he lay there that day in that aisle with his gut stabbed and saw me as I came towards him, even in that agony his eyes were hollow. As I lapped him in my arms, he fought, fought to go back, told me he had a son who waited for him to tell him stories, lies he said but nevertheless. His last breaths shuffling with his words and then his soul gave up the body. He looked defeated. He said I was beautiful, nothing like he had imagined. I hear that a lot.

I, death. It's 3:03. I am leaving. A faint smell of mirth hangs loose in the air. Maybe it's coming from him; he looks content, nothing like that day. He is laughing I left his son to that girl's embrace, looking beautiful like a crisp summer day. What good is power if one is compelled! I like to cheat at times.

' How Jazz Music Works' Workshop by 12 KEYS, was one of the most enlightening workshops that we have been to. Pradyumna a.k.a. Paddy, Founder and Music director of 12 Keys, has the most incredible control over the piano and the language of Jazz. He is the leading Latin Jazz Pianist in the country today and has been a music educationist for 18 years now. With around 50 people ranging from teenagers to senior citizens who are jazz enthusiasts, the session was incredibly fun and interactive. With the history of Jazz music and the technicalities as to how this music is different from all the other genres, Paddy made sure everyone understood what he was teaching. This workshop was not only a boon to musicians but also eye opening for non musicians! From Autumn Leaves to Bag’s Groove, and ending it with an amazing cover of 'My Funny Valentine', Paddy left everyone mesmerised with his control over music! He taught the attendees the difference of improvisation in Jazz music and also discussed the different types of Jaz music like ballads and swing music. The turnout was amazing and with so many musicians in the room, and with Paddy’s teaching skills and master knowledge on jazz, the workshop was a huge success!

We are looking forward to more such opportunities to learn music and the history and context of music with more such amazing workshops by 12KEYS.

|| A New way to Travel || - Reevu De

Aren't you tired of waiting for a ride that will come a little less packed, where you have to huddle a little less; will be pocket-friendly and not at your throat for money? Well, fret not, because we have finally found the Messiah, the shuttle cabs.

Shuttle cabs have been my preferred mode of travel for medium to long distances. Large, comfortable, fourteen seat wingers ply along the dusty roads of the city at all hours, converting the weary workers and the sullen students into happy travelers. With fixed routes and fixed stops, these cars are cozy and comfortable. Just plug in a set of earphones, tune in to The Fibonacci House's YouTube channel and settle back for an hour of smooth cruising.

Easily found on the busy routes of Kolkata and neighbouring parts, these little rides charge way less than the AC buses and capitalist cabs, and also come with the guarantee for seats.

Here are a few busy routes where shuttle cabs are available:

1. Barrackpore to Ecospace;
2. Barrackpore to DPS;
3. DPS to Ecospace;
4. Ecospace to Sector V;
5. Barasat Champadali More to Ecospace;
6. Ecospace to Sector V via TCS Gitanjali Park and Unitech Infospace;
7. Sector V to Howrah;
8. Sector V to Tollygunje Metro station;
9. Sector V to Ranikuthi.

After five successful workshop with 12 KEYS . A holistic music mentoring institute based out of Kolkata, are back with their latest workshop on “How Jazz Music Works” at The Doodle Room on the 22nd of April from 5 pm to 7 pm.

The workshop would be conducted by Pradyumna Singh Manot a.k.a Paddy, Founder of 12 KEYS and eminent Latin jazz pianist, composer and music educationist. The workshop will delve deeper into the beginnings of Jazz music, the roots and the evolution of Jazz and how Jazz worked its way up from the cotton fields of South America to the eminent clubs and bars of late 19th century America. The workshop would be both interactive and audiovisual, to help create a better understanding of Jazz music and to make it more fun for the attendees. It will also be exploring concepts of improvisation and the swing feel of jazz. A performance by Pradyumna and his students of Jazz at 12 KEYS, is a highlight of the workshop, which you would not want to miss!

12 KEYS, modelled on the Gurukula Parampara of Indian Education, started with a dream to help artists who want to become established musicians someday, to answer the question of how to approach life as a musician. The go-to place for aspiring musicians in India, 12 KEYS have eminent mentors, professionally teaching Latin, Jazz, Blues and Western classical music on keys, strings and percussions. (For more information visit www.12keys.in)
Jazz music is seen by many as “American classical music” with big musicians on the list like Miles Davis, John Coltrane and, of course, Paul Whiteman. Jazz was the most popular music in America in the late 19th century, but lately, it has seen a steady decline. To bring back Jazz from the graveyards to the streets once more and to help more people understand the beauty of Jazz music, it is being brought back through these workshops organised by 12 KEYS. Pradyumna himself has taken several independent Jazz workshops for Indian musicians. He is the ambassador for Jazz music from India representing Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR) and has recently performed at the Panama Jazz Festival, 2018. There, he also conducted a workshop on Indian Classical Music, which was very well received. Pradyumna has been playing Jazz music for 18 years and has performed with popular American Jazz musicians like Megan Powers, Clare Michad and a Candian trombonist Alister Kay who also played for Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald!

So if you want to take a trip into the history of jazz music, a trip down the lanes of an era and a genre forgotten, drop down to The Doodle Room from 5 pm to 7 pm on 22nd April, for an interactive an and fun session of Jazz and “How Jazz Music Works”.

In the sweltering heat of Rajasthan, one sees the golden yellow stretches of sand for miles on end but the eyes of the beholder are also blessed with the splashes of colour and the beauty of the work, created by human hands strung along the high walls of numerous forts.
In the midst of this rebirth of history and art, the gaggle of noises of the hawkers and the bargaining folk meet the ears in a mundane but ritualistic harmony. With each trade a beauty shines through the faces of buyers and sellers otherwise dark with tiredness and sun. The charm of this heated fragment has alighted many a tired soul and it continues to even today.

|| Home ||

I'm home. This beautiful place I belong to. I'm waiting for you.
That scent; that gathering; that beautiful flute― with the little sparrows chirping their claim over the ganges; "The call of the river" they spell in their language.

That sweet language familiar once again and a gazillion voices and accents encapsulated very succinctly as a drug to my ears―I craved it after that unknown corrupted breeze I was in. Pretentious yet familiar, but not at the same time I realized.

The beautiful clear skies and the semi-nourished scent of the red earth when the mother of rivers swiftly flows to and fro and ponders, "Which way to go?"

That sound of little wealth nobody hesitates to invest with only one hope: "A good life."
That enchanting sight of beauty is not only "teep", "sharee" ,"coffee house and adda", "lake" or "fuchka"; it is the crisp and mellow sentiments; it is the emotion and the little positive smirk early in the morning or in the dead of night with tea on the right and silk-cut light on the left.

Under the luminous intensity of the colorful lights of the bridge, I imagine possibilities,
two bag-packs, memories and whatsoever belongings I might've possessed.
Home-coming or sculpting never interested me or my ethnicity more before winter made friends with summer.

Art never instilled more excitement and enthusiasm than this part of time. I'm home.
Time has changed, so has beauty. Mind you, that it's never in the negative way. With all the white balls of snow (kaasphool) isn't my home just beautiful and so wonderland like?
My home welcomes me and my home welcomes you. Some day this shall come together and so will we, walking together; sometimes you behind and sometimes I'll be ahead or vice versa.

We'll both be home one day; we’ll both be together one day. But for now, I’m home.

A little sand dune shifted with the wind, as the traveler looked for some shelter. The wind was strong and extremely dusty. But tonight the walk must come to a halt.

Only about three people knew the ordeal I was going through. Just as I crossed the stream of sand shifting, I saw a terrible mound of sand. If the wind blew from the other side, the sand would surely engulf me in its tight yet unwelcoming embrace. So, I ran past all of the hurdles and made it on the top of the mound of sand. The sight visible from there was not only amazing but reassuring to the core of my heart.

So, I ran, tumbling into the sand as I laid my descent. It was an oasis, the beacon of hope. My sulky old face was now a shiny penny, shining brighter than the full moon. As I approached the spot, I found myself a decent ride to the sunset.

Upon reaching there, I was greeted by many a businessmen, they all seemed to ask, “So are you here on business or pleasure?”, and then they would all break into a mocking laughter. They would laugh louder and louder each time they would take a breath in, as if I was some kind of funny article of a joke. I was startled, astonished beyond comparison. Suddenly, the monotony of the situation made me anxious. I ran to a camel trader and asked him, “How much for the camel and these maps?” ; I was greeted with the same old question. None of the men seemed to answer my question; they would ask their own question and laugh.

Finally, I ran, as one of the men seemed to turn hostile. The men converged their sight on me. They all seemed to be in a hurry to reach somewhere. They asked me: “Is this the way to salvation?”; They seemed to be in a hurry as they asked their question and moved on. Their question was simple, subtle and yet disturbing. I glanced towards one of them asking for relief. They laughed and only said: “follow me”.

The only time I write is when longing and melancholy is seeping from the silence of the darkest hours.

It takes a lover or something that is half way there, sometimes, to fall in love.
And it takes endless poems, nights, heartaching nuisance and even art to fall out of it.

After months of lurking between the hours of the night to find a peace of mind,
when you are placing your pen on the ends of an old, dusty journal,
when its already past four in the morning,
when the heartache isn't enough to fight the last bits of your sobriety,
when the tragedy of a broken heart fails to mould into creativity;
that's when you know,

You have already let go.
