Diminishing Religious Landscape: Asian American Beliefs and Trends

The religious composition of the Asian American population in the United States has undergone significant changes, according to data published by the Pew Research Center. The study analyzed religious beliefs and affiliations among various Asian American groups and revealed a noticeable shift in religious identity over the past decade.

The report found that the percentage of religiously affiliated Asian Americans has increased from 26% in 2012 to 32% in 2023. While a considerable number of Asian Americans express a connection to their religious traditions, the motivation for this affiliation is often nonreligious in nature. Approximately 40% of Asian Americans cited nonreligious reasons for their connection to their faith.

One of the most striking findings is the decline in the percentage of Asian American Christians, which has decreased from 42% in 2012 to 34% in 2023. This substantial drop indicates a shifting religious landscape within this demographic.

World Arthritis Day: West Bengal has 4.9 million cases of OA, third-highest in India

Around 62.35 million individuals in India suffer from osteoarthritis (OA), a common disease that causes stiffness and pain in joints. West Bengal, with 4.9 million cases as of 2019, has one of the highest shares of the disease burden, after Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.

Now, with increasing longevity and a rise in geriatric population; the disease burden is expected to rise even further. A study found that OA affects over 80 per cent people more than 55 years of age, while another estimates that patients – roughly – live for up to 30 years with OA enduring severe mobility issues and pain.

"Osteoarthritis significantly impacts mobility and independence of the above 55 age group,” said Dr Santosh Kumar, Chief Joint Replacement Surgeon, Belle Vue Clinic, Kolkata.

James Webb Space Telescope Reveals Mysterious Pairing of Rogue 'Planets'

Scientists using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) have made a remarkable discovery within a distant nebula: planet-like objects floating freely, unattached to any star, and remarkably, orbiting in pairs.

The JWST's images of the Orion Nebula provide unprecedented clarity, and upon closer inspection, researchers have encountered a surprising celestial phenomenon. Approximately 40 gaseous "planets" have been identified, each accompanied by another planet in a distant tandem orbit, even though there's no apparent massive body exerting gravitational influence on them.

These enigmatic objects, some comparable in size to Jupiter, have been dubbed "JuBMOs" or Jupiter-Mass Binary Objects by scientists from the European Space Agency, Samuel Pearson and Mark McCaughrean.

Samuel Pearson, a member of the research team analyzing the data, expressed his astonishment at the "unexpected" nature of this discovery. He stated, "Brilliant scientists have been working on theories and models of star and planet formation for decades. But none of them has ever predicted that we would find pairs of super low mass objects floating alone in space - and we're seeing lots of them."

While rogue planets are not a novel discovery, the mystery lies in how or why they have come together in pairs. These objects are too small to be classified as stars, and according to current theories, it shouldn't be feasible for planets of this size to form within the nebula.

India is on the brink of a significant demographic shift, as the number of elderly citizens in the country is projected to double by 2050, surpassing the count of children, according to a report by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

Currently, there are 149 million individuals aged 60 and above in India, but this figure is anticipated to surge to a staggering 347 million by 2050, as per the UNFPA study. Invasion of Pacific Pink Salmon Threatens Nordic Atlantic Salmon Rivers

Stretching along the border between Norway and Finland lies a pristine natural wonder, the world's greatest Atlantic salmon river. Known as the Tanaelva or Tana in Norway and the Tenojoki or Teno in Finland, this river is celebrated for its pure and unpolluted waters as it meanders through unspoiled regions from Norway's northernmost county, Finnmark, into Lapland.

However, the tranquility of this majestic river has been disrupted, as its waters and banks are now littered with decaying fish, emanating a pungent stench of death. Aino Erkinaro, a doctoral researcher from the University of Oulu in Finland, describes the scene as dramatic and overwhelming. The culprit behind this ecological calamity is not the native Atlantic salmon but an invasive species—the Pacific pink salmon. The crisis has prompted both Norway and Finland to declare a state of emergency.

Also referred to as pukkellaks or humpback salmon due to their characteristic bulging appearance, pink salmon were introduced into Russia's Kola Peninsula in the 1950s in an attempt to bolster the local economy. These fish lead a unique life cycle, dwelling in oceans and returning to the same rivers every two years to spawn before succumbing to death. However, pink salmon often deviate from their designated river, leading them to establish new habitats. Over time, their westward migration has accelerated, driven in part by changing climate conditions, and now they find their final resting place in the Tana River.

Needed: a financing breakthrough at the UN High-level Meeting on Universal Health Coverage

The Political Declaration of the High-level Meeting on Universal Health Coverage,(1) scheduled for Sept 21, 2023 at the UN, is high-minded and admirable. Nations will recommit to universal health coverage (UHC) as called for by Sustainable Development Goal 3. However, the declaration will not mean much without a plan and financing to back it up. That’s the real test ahead.

The world is far from achieving UHC. According to a 2020 study,(2) a UHC index scored 85.0 (of 100) for the high-income countries, but just 46.0 in south Asia and 43.2 in sub-Saharan Africa. High-income countries (HICs) ensure universal or nearly universal health coverage, whereas low-income countries (LICs) and many lower to middle-income countries (LMICs) cannot do so with their own resources.
