One of the holiest pilgrimage places for the is the in . It's a worldfamous place of worship, where the left tooth of is enshrined.
The is adorned with intricate carvings using gold, silver, bronze and ivoryivory with Kandayan . The Sacred relic was brought to Sri Lanka by Princess Hemamala & Prince Dantha from the city of Kalinga in ancient India, during the reign of King Keerthi Sri Meghavarna since then it got placed in shrines of the Royal families in various places like ancient capitals of Anuradapura, Pollonnaruwa, Kurunegala, Gampola etc. However, in Kandy the last Kingdom the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic continues to be the shrine to receive the utmost veneration of the Buddhists across the world and it got declared as a UNESCO World Heritage site of culture in 1988.
The first “Dalada Madura” in Kandy was built by King Wimaladharmasuriya but got destroyed by the . Later it got rebuilt but got burnt by the . Wimaladharmasuriya the second rebuilt but that also decayed soon. His son King Sri Veera Parakrama Narendrasinghe (reigned from 1707 – 1739) built the 2 storeyed Dalada Madura which we can see today. The South Indian Kings who ruled the country renovated and protected the shrine. But it's very sad and unfortunate that we Indians need to pay same entrance fee as that to be paid by the foreign Nationals from SAARC countries other than Sri Lanka i.e. 1500LKR (2000LKR for all other countries). Later the beautification was done by King Keerthi Sri Rajasinghe and the octagonal pavilion was constructed by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe (reigned from year 1798 – 1815).
The temple sustained damage from bombings by Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna and by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam; however, it was fully restored each time.
The golden canopy over the main shrine and the golden fence which encircles the temple complex, was built in 1987 by then Prime Minister, Ranasinghe Premadasa. The tooth relic is encased in seven golden caskets which are engraved with precious gemstones. The casket represent a stupa and the procession casket used during the Kandy Esala Perahera (a procession held during August) is also displayed in the same chamber.
The temple is open for devotees every day from 5.30 a.m. till 8.00 p.m. (Srilankan time). Please note that all persons entering the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic will be screened at the entrance and your footwears need to be submitted. Nanumura Mangallaya or bathing of the tooth with a herbal preparation is held every Wednesday at 9.30 am. The Malwathu and Asgiri s conduct daily worship in the inner chamber of the temple and rituals are performed three times daily: at dawn, at noon and in the evening.
The artefact serves as a significant symbol of the identity. Everyday thousands of white-clad pilgrims make their way to this hallowed space, with lotus and frangipani for prayers. While the tooth stays hidden inside a gold casket, visitors and devotees visit the temple during to have a look at the well protected inner shrine where it is kept.
Standing there in my white ensemble on the lush lawns with the view of the temple, I realized the true essence of a living cultural in the land of .
