“Jati Chara Jay Go” expresses the unyielding power and significance of love in contrast to social divisions such as caste. It emphasises that love cannot be easily dismissed or renounced, unlike societal constructs, as it is like a jackfruit’s glue, symbolising its strong and lasting nature. The song also talks about the intoxicating and immersive aspect of love where it pierces one’s heart and makes them lose themselves. The song concludes with the lyricist inviting all around him to transcend social barriers and indulge wholly in love and devotion towards Lord Krishna, thus accentuating love’s ability to bring people together, despite differences.

This song has been written by Chamu Gosai, as is evident from the lyrics - “Ore Chamu bole sokhigone - Ogo, amra cholo jayi Shyam darshane” meaning, “Chamu asks his female friends - Oh, let’s go for the holy sight of Shyam (Lord Krishna)” It is quite prevalent for Baul song-writers to incorporate their names in their songs, as a way to inform people about them conveniently.

Bauls are a group of wandering mystical minstrels of Bengal. This community started with the largest Cultural Revolution in the history of human civilization, the Bhakti Movement led by Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Their syncretic traditions are the outcome of a culmination of Hinduism, Islam and Buddhism. Baul Music and Philosophy are deeply intertwined, with the Music serving as a medium for expressing and exploring our inner-self and the world around us, in search of the Divine. They also emphasize the importance of love, compassion, and tolerance, and reject distinctions based on caste, religion, or social status. Duality is a common theme in Baul song lyrics, with allegorical narratives using metaphors. ‘Deho-tatva’ – a recurring premise in Baul lyrics – is a concept of portraying nature and the universe through our bodies, which reflects the immortality of the cycle of life and death. It connects s*x and spirituality – spiritual union of the individual with the Divine - to attain Moksha.

This song describes the overwhelming emotions that a person experiences when in love with someone but is suffering the pain of separation. The journey of being in love is not always smooth. This person says that he immersed himself in love, but then drowned and died in those very waters. He also feels dead due to the separation and is getting drowned in the agony that follows. The lyrics describe his love getting suffocated in loneliness. It is only the memories that bring a sliver of happiness to his life and vanish immediately as reality strikes. He repeatedly calls out to his beloved ‘Indubala’ and asks her where and with whom she is now after leaving him alone in a sea of sorrows.
