Welcome freshers, to the mystical land of Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur! Far away from any form of civilization, you may have noticed that KGP lives in its own version of reality. Only here can puddles of green water be termed as lakes, small and cramped storage rooms be termed “rooms to live in Halls of Residence”, and places that have nothing to do with technology have the word as their prefix. Similarly, KGP’s version of a media body manifests itself in the form of The Scholars’ Avenue, named after the old name of the road that runs from BC Roy Hall of Residence to BC Roy Technology Hospital. Lurking in the shadows, we run a media body with no news and no money. Here's a little something for you to get to know us better, a visually transmitted, digitally recorded motion picture we've meticulously crafted. And look how professional it is, very demure, very mindful.
Love,
The Scholars’ Avenue
The patience of students ran out finally and in response to some shocking comments made in a previous meeting by the administration, there was a strong show of solidarity by the students of IIT Kharagpur.
With the news of a student protest in front of the main building, the students were stopped at the gate of the academic area initially. But with a massive turnout of students from each and every hall of residence, the administration was forced to allow the student senate in and discuss the situation.
After a long wait of nearly an hour, at around 3 pm we could finally see some commotion near the entrance of the main building. The entire hour-long wait was filled with students shouting slogans, with the main demand of conducting an open house for the students at IIT Kharagpur. As the Director walked out to address the students, initially the demand for an open house was rejected. The response was that there would be an extensive meeting among the officials of the administration and subsequently a meeting with the student senate. Met with constant chants of an open house and a strong show of unity, finally, the Director was forced to give in and agreed to an Open House.

UPDATE | Students protest for HMC mess
In response to the protests led by the students, the HMC Chairman, Prof Partha Saha, came to address the concerns of the students. The full video of the interaction can be found below.
He assured the students that the HMC mess would be functional from the 1st of November. A willingness form has been circulated among the students, and mess cards will be given to those who fill the form after they pay the required amount through the ERP payment channel. For halls with only a few boarders, the HMC mess will be functional if the mess contractor deems it feasible. However, the private mess shall remain functional for those who do not wish to avail themselves of this service at least until December.
The HMC chairman is sceptical about allowing the functioning of night canteens, but after some persuasion, agreed to consider takeaways if higher authorities have no opposition. The students’ senate has an appointment with the Deputy Director today, in which this issue, among others, would be discussed.
The entire commotion of the private mess not cooking dinner for the students was attributed to a lack of proper communication, which has persisted for a very long time now. The private mess workers were not informed about a boycott, and the food cooked had to be distributed. The decision of not cooking dinner for the students was not conveyed to the LBS hall president. The approval of a new private mess in the MMM hall of residence was not conveyed to the respective hall president.
The Scholars’ Avenue hopes that the HMC stays true to its promises, and urges everyone involved to do what they can in repairing the damage that has been done over the pandemic.
A fire has reportedly broken out in a tree dense region on the campus. While the cause of the same is not ascertained yet, the local fire brigade is attempting to quell it.
Edit - The fire has been put out.
Ultra Cost Effective Covid-19 Test Kit
Researchers at the institute have developed a novel technology for COVID-19 Rapid Test. The test can be conducted in an ultra-low-cost portable device with the test results available in a customized smartphone application for dissemination within an hour without requiring manual interpretation. All of this at a cost of around INR 400/- per test. This first-of-its-kind device will bring the testing for COVID-19 out from the walls of expensive laboratories and RT-PCR machines and enable testing at affordable costs for the under-served community across the world. Professor Suman Chakraborty from the Mechanical Engineering Department, and Dr Arindam Mondal from the School of BioScience, came up with the concept of a portable non-invasive rapid detection test for COVID-19 thus taking the testing mechanism to a whole new level. This innovation is likely to make a significant breakthrough in global viral pandemic management. Any corporate or start-up can approach the Institute for technology licensing and commercial scale of production. The Institute is open to tie-ups, including a mode where the government intervenes with regards to meeting our low-cost healthcare objective for the under-served community as a policy measure to protect the interest of public health amidst the pandemic situation, instead of merely developing a strong profit-oriented model.
