Instant loan apps promise easy money. But what's the catch? "The harassment in this scam ruined many lives," says investigative journalist Poonam Agarwal, who's spent months investigating a cyber scam destroying lives across India.

She spoke to people who borrowed a few thousands rupees through instant loan apps - and found themselves with enormous debts, inflated by huge interest rates.

"Once you download the app, you have to give permissions to access your data: your gallery, access to your SMS and phone logs. Not many people were aware of this and gave permission."

And when people couldn’t clear their debt, they’d start receiving threatening phone calls from recovery agents.

"They would first make polite calls, that you'd better pay... Then they would start blackmailing you... they would start texting your contacts, your family, your friends."

Some people had their faces photoshopped onto pornographic content – and those pictures were shared with family members and colleagues. Poonam spoke to victims and to relatives of people who took their own lives after being threatened or humiliated by these loan apps.
