Deeply frustrated over the delay in handling Manipur crisis: Manipur congress leader
TMB News Network
Imphal: Manipur Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Okram Ibobi Singh on Tuesday expressed deep frustration over the prolonged delay in handling the crisis in the state and questioned whether Manipur is truly considered a part of India.
Addressing reporters at Congress Bhavan in Imphal, Singh criticized the state and central governments for failing to resolve the 19-month-long unrest.
Ibobi also highlighted the Congress’ repeated appeals to convene a state Assembly session to address the critical issues affecting Manipur.
“The state Assembly is the only appropriate platform to discuss and find solutions to Manipur’s crisis. Today marks the end of the calendar year, and yet, the Assembly has not been convened despite memorandums being submitted to the governor, the CM" he added.
Singh emphasized the urgent need for an Assembly session given the state’s dire situation. He said "states like Karnataka have established rules mandating a minimum of four Assembly sittings annually, suggesting Manipur should adopt similar practices."
Ibobi warned of potential unrest if the government continues to ignore public grievances.
“If the people lose trust in the government and reach a breaking point, the security forces might struggle to maintain control,” he cautioned.
He also recounted a recent conversation with a senior Assam Rifles officer, where he expressed gratitude for their efforts in evacuating minority communities from conflict zones like Moreh and Churachandpur.
However, Singh criticized the Assam Rifles for not preventing the militants from destroying homes in these areas.
“The focus should have been on protecting the minorities and stopping the violence at its source,” he asserted.
