Women’s Junior Asia Cup 2024: India registers 5-0 win over Malaysia

Oman (Agency): Defending champion India overcame a slow start to secure a dominant 5-0 victory over Malaysia in their Women’s Junior Asia Cup match on Monday.

This marked its third consecutive win over Malaysia in the tournament’s history, having previously triumphed 9-1 in 2015 and 2-1 in 2023.

After a resounding 13-1 victory over Bangladesh on Sunday, India took time to find its rhythm and faced strong resistance from the Malaysian defence. However, once it scored the opening goal, India continued to build on the lead and delivered a commanding performance.

Deepika (37th, 39th, 48th) scored a hat-trick, while Vaishnavi Phalke (32nd) and Kanika Siwach (38th) added a goal each.

India missed out on several scoring opportunities. It was in the third quarter that the defending champion started scoring. After earning a penalty corner in the 32nd minute, and this time, instead of going directly for a goal, Puja Sahoo directed the ball slightly to the left, where Vaishnavi Phalke was perfectly positioned to strike it into the net. India capitalized on its newfound momentum to dominate the game.

The second goal came in the 37th minute when India converted another penalty corner. Star drag-flicker Deepika showcased her expertise, firing a powerful shot past the goalkeeper to extend the lead. Just a minute later, India launched a quick counterattack as Binima Dhan dribbled down the right flank and set up Kanika Siwach, who scored a stunning field goal from distance.

In the 39th minute, Lalrinpuii was fouled by Malaysia’s goalkeeper, earning India a penalty stroke. Deepika stepped up and confidently scored from the spot.

In the final quarter, India earned another penalty corner in the 48th minute, and Deepika capitalized with a low-driven shot past the goalkeeper to complete her hat-trick, taking India’s score to 5-0 by the end of the match.

The win ensured India remained in second place, level on points with China, but trailing on goal difference.

Granting of ILP is the most significant step taken by the Centre since granting statehood in 1972: Manipur CM

TMB News Network

Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Monday remarked that the granting of Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the state (in 2019) is the most significant and positive step ever taken by the Centre after granting of the statehood in 1972.

Speaking at the celebration of 5 years of Inner Line Permit system in Manipur, Singh said "today we are remembering and giving recognition to all the struggles and sacrifices that went into the demand for ILP in the state. After the granting of statehood in 1972, the granting of ILP is the most significant and positive step ever taken by the central government" Singh said.

"After statehood, what significant step have been taken up in the state other than granting of ILP. Today, many seem to have forgotten that ILP was given to us after a long struggle. We depend 70 to 80 pc on the centre for our survival but even then ILP which is a pass that requires permission for the entry of the country's own citizens was given to us by the Centre. This is very rare" Singh said.

Singh continued "there have been demands for ILP from other states including Meghalaya. Manipur has 52 pc general community yet ILP was given because of its pecularity and uniqueness and centre's keeness to protect it. If we are unable to applaud these central leaders who had thought for the welfare of the state, who else should we applaud?"

Singh said instead of pointing fingers to others, it would be better to ask what one has done for the nation and the society and asserted that even though ILP has been implemented in the state for 5 years, there are lack of sincerity in its implementation with officials and government employees engaging in ill practices, whether intentionally or not.

Speaking on the state issues of illegal immigration and poppy cultivation, Singh said "the conflict has its roots in the government crackdown on poppy cultivation and today even at the time of current crisis, poppy cultivation are still underway. War on drugs campaign of the state government was launched to save the society and the youths and not the NDA government."

"The task of identification of illegal immigrants and taking their biometric was started constitutionally and legally and no force was used in a single case. No additional police force was used against them and we only wanted to establish the law of the land. Has there been a single record of abuses or ill treatment to illegal immigrants in detention centre or jails in the state of Manipur? We provided them with provisions of edible and medicinal items. The only process we did was to take biometeic of them and details as they are not Indian citizens" Singh said.

Calling for the people to stay united, Singh said there are no personal interests involved in calling for border fencing, crackdown on drugs and poppy cultivation, demanding cancellation of FMR and implementation of NRC.

"Ours is a complex state for which we need proper planning and stratedgy. Emotions cannot save the land. We also need to reciprocate others for what they have done. The policies and programmes taken up by Union Home Minister Amit Shah is to protect and safeguard the future generations to come," Singh added.

Refering to peace deal signed in Jiribam and outbreak of violence in the district, Singh continued "there are many who wants to destroy peace. We had tried so hard in meeting and discussing with Hmar and Thadou tribe leaders on how to establish peace and had jointly announced peace. There was an encouraging development all around. However, just two days before another peace (signing) was to be announced in Silchar, some miscreants deliberately destroyed peace in Jiribam. God will never forgive them. I also myself met with leaders who could not be met publicly."

During the event, Singh also virtually inagurated the ILP facilitation centre in Jiribam district.

Singh also informed that he had sought excuses to skip attending the oath taking ceremony of Maharastra CM as well as skip the recently concluded programme held under DONOR programme as the state is passing through a tough stage where a civilian still remains missing and innocent woman and children have been killed in Jiribam. "I sought excuses from central leaders that I cannot leave station due to the situation in the state" he said.
