A 28-year-old man was arrested for stealing vehicles from parking areas near government hospitals in the twin cities.

The accused was identified as Mohammed Sameer, an air-conditioner technician from Falaknuma.

He had been facing financial difficulties due to his addiction to alcohol and g***a which drove him to steal vehicles. Sameer, who completed his SSC in Kalapathar, initially worked as a labourer at a petrol pump in Afzalgunj. While working at Osmania General Hospital (OGH) in Hyderabad, he noticed the absence of surveillance cameras in the parking areas which he exploited to carry out the thefts.

According to reports, the accused would steal vehicles parked near hospitals in Hyderabad. Then, he would use them for a few days before selling them to receivers running scrap businesses in Musheerabad. The receivers would then dismantle some of the stolen vehicles into spare parts for later disposal.

Upon receiving information, police arrested the accused and recovered five vehicles in their original condition and four dismantled vehicles with a total value of Rs 4 lakh.

A case has been registered and further investigation is ongoing.

Earlier, Hyderabad police arrested a man for allegedly stealing an ambulance from Gandhi Hospital while an ambulance driver was occupied in moving a patient to a ward.

According to a press release, the Chilkalguda police said that K Yadagiri, 33, a labourer from New Bhoiguda in Secunderabad, had met L Srinivas, a Karimnagar ambulance driver who had arrived at Gandhi Hospital with a patient, on Monday. To assist the patient in getting to the emergency ward, Srinivas accompanied him to the hospital.

Following a complaint, the police registered a case and tracked down Yadagiri. The vehicle was later seized from him.

Iran’s government announced on Tuesday that it has lifted a more than two-year ban on WhatsApp and Google Play, according to the official IRNA news agency.

The decision was made by the Supreme Council of Cyber Space during a meeting chaired by reformist President Masoud Pezeshkian, who has pledged to ease restrictions on social media platforms.

Telecommunications Minister Sattar Heshemi described the move as a “first step” towards lifting further restrictions. In a post on X, he stated, “The path will continue,” hinting at the potential unblocking of additional services in the future.

While some users in Tehran and other cities reported accessing the platforms on computers, mobile access remained unavailable for many.

WhatsApp was previously the third most popular messaging platform in Iran, following Instagram and Telegram.

The ban on WhatsApp and Google Play was introduced in 2022 amid nationwide protests over the death of a woman detained by the morality police for allegedly violating strict dress codes. The protests subsided in 2023 after a harsh government crackdown that resulted in hundreds of deaths and thousands of imprisonments.

Although Iran has blocked several social media platforms over the years, many citizens bypass the restrictions using proxies and VPNs.

In a significant step toward inclusivity and empowerment, as many as 39 transgender individuals have been appointed as Traffic Assistants in Hyderabad.

The recruits underwent a 15-day training programme and performed their first traffic drill on Sunday, at the Telangana State Integrated Command Control Centre (ICCC) before Hyderabad Police Commissioner CV Anand.

The demo showcased the skills and training received by the Traffic Assistants, highlighting their readiness to contribute to traffic management across the city.

The transgender traffic assistants are set to begin their official duties on Monday and will serve under the same status as Home Guards. The move comes as part of a pilot project aimed at integrating transgender people into government service roles, with the hope of expanding this initiative to other departments in the future.

Commissioner CV Anand, who presided over the programme, commended the transgender community for their dedication and determination.

He emphasised the police department's commitment to fostering inclusivity and providing equal opportunities for all sections of society. "The inclusion of the transgender community in the traffic management workforce is a progressive step that reflects Hyderabad's commitment to equality and diversity," said Anand.

The Traffic Assistants will assist the Hyderabad Traffic Police in regulating vehicular movement, ensuring road safety, and addressing traffic-related issues. Their involvement is expected to improve traffic management efficiency while promoting societal acceptance of the transgender community. The initiative has been widely appreciated by citizens and activists alike, as it represents a shift toward a more inclusive and equitable society.

The city police apart will initiate aerial monitoring of the city using a fleet of drones from next year. “We used to depend on CCTV camera footage to investigate untoward incidents. From next year, we will be constantly monitoring the twin cities by using drone cameras,” said city police commissioner C.V. Anand on Sunday.

“This will make it easier to monitor religious processions and political rallies,” he said. The decision was taken after the recent disturbances in the twin cities, including attacks on religious places.

It was reported that the city police had procured over a dozen advanced drones for the purpose.

In an effort to ensure fairness and reduce wait times, the U.S. Department of State is implementing new rules for nonimmigrant visa appointments starting January 1, 2025.

Under the updated system, applicants will still be able to schedule their first visa appointment at their location of choice. However, if they need to reschedule for any reason, they will be allowed to do so only once.

A second rescheduling or missed appointment will require applicants to book a new appointment and repay their application fee.The Department of State emphasizes the importance of attending scheduled appointments to help streamline the visa process and ensure that as many applicants as possible can be accommodated in a timely manner.

These changes aim to create a more efficient and equitable system, reducing wait times for everyone.Applicants are encouraged to carefully select a date they are sure they can attend, to avoid any additional delays or costs.

Hyderabad city has seen an abnormal increase in crime rate from a mere two per cent in 2023 to a whopping 41 per cent in 2024.

Incidentally, during the BRS government in 2022, a total of 24,220 cases were reported. The following year, 24,821 cases were registered in the city and an increase of two per cent was recorded by the police.

In 2024, the Hyderabad Police registered 35,944 cases. The total bodily crime cases registered were 8447 this year, while last year, 5098 cases were booked.

Also, 5328 property crime cases were registered this year compared to the previous year when 3,551 cases were booked.

Although an abnormal increase, Hyderabad Police Commissioner CV Anand attributed the rise to the police registering First Information Reports (FIRs) in all offences and investigating them.

"For every small crime, a case is booked and investigation done. We are maintaining a zero-tolerance policy for any crime," he said.

He said all wings of the city police were seriously following the cases. "Cases are registered for cell-phone snatching and even small crimes. Dedicated teams are apprehending and arresting offenders. Organised crimes have come down in the city and activities of all rowdy sheeters are under surveillance and control," he added.
