Dr CVS Sarma Memorial Lecture - Science Denialism & Democracy - Vidya Krishnan

The pandemic has changed our social and political lives irrevocably- in ways small and big. The balance between work and family, the casual acceptance of government’s executive or emergency powers to control infectious diseases, and, most of all, the sheer scale of misinformation combined with hostility towards science and scientific authorities has embedded a deep distrust of science among citizens who were already receptive to bad information and conspiracy theories.
This makes it urgent for us to examine the interdependence of modern science and the modern state. What happens when we deny new evidence in support of a science that's in service of the state?

Vidya Krishnan is a writer and journalist based in Goa, India. Her first book, Phantom Plague: How Tuberculosis Shaped our History, will be published by Public Affairs in February 2022.

Dear Bol Hyderabad Friends,

Greetings from Bol Hyderabad 90.4 fm!

It's hard to believe that a whole decade has passed since we sent off the first signal from our small campus community radio station transmitter at the University of Hyderabad, and launched Bol Hyderabad 90.4 fm! (August 15, 2011). It's been a patchy and challenging journey, but always enjoyable. Much of the energy that has driven the journey has come from our community of supporters--students, alumni, faculty, radio enthusiasts from the University and from across Hyderabad, visitors to the campus, and many, many people who believe in the power of civic discourse and the pleasures of listening.

As we celebrate our tenth anniversary, we'd like to reach out and thank all those who have contributed to our learning and our continued presence. Of course, we are sorry we could not bring all of our supporters and creators together--maybe there will be an opportunity to do that when we're on the other side of this pandemic!
However, if you have the time, we would love it if you could send us a short voice note (30 seconds or less) telling us what Bol Hyderabad has meant to you, we will put together an audio celebration that will be aired on the radio as well as shared on social media.
Thanks again for your support to Bol Hyderabad--let's hope that together, we will continue to "Bajao!"

Regards
Naveen Sen
Radio Station Coordinator
