Maghey Sankranti Mela 2025 Kicks Off at Jorethang with Grandeur

Namchi, Jan 14: The much-anticipated Maghey Sankranti Mela 2025 was officially inaugurated today at Jorethang by the Governor of Sikkim, Mr. Om Prakash Mathur, alongside Chief Minister Mr. Prem Singh Tamang. The event, steeped in culture and tradition, marks the start of the state’s celebrations for 50 years of Statehood.

In a symbolic gesture of peace, pigeons were released during the inaugural ceremony, and the official badge of the Maghey Sankranti Mela 2025 was unveiled. The Governor, addressing the gathering as the chief guest, expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister for inviting him to the event. He reflected on the humble beginnings of the Mela, which has now evolved into a grand celebration of Sikkim's rich heritage.

Promoting Entrepreneurship and Unity

The Governor commended the Chief Minister's efforts to foster entrepreneurship by integrating multinational companies with local entrepreneurs, creating sustainable employment opportunities for the state’s youth. He lauded Sikkim's unique blend of cultural and traditional heritage, emphasizing the importance of unity in diversity, and urged citizens to work collaboratively with the government to achieve new milestones for the state.

He also pledged to act as a bridge between the state and the central government, ensuring Sikkim's development and prosperity.

Recognitions and Felicitations

The ceremony included the distribution of regular appointment orders to Anganwadi workers and helpers. Eleven nurses trained under the Sikkim Inspires program, who secured placements in Germany, were felicitated for their achievements. Footballer Ms. Simran Gurung was also honored for representing Sikkim on the international stage.

Cultural and Sporting Highlights

The Mela showcased the vibrant cultural diversity of Sikkim with traditional performances such as the dhan nach, madal dance, and khukuri dance, accompanied by live folk music.

The sporting events added excitement to the day, featuring two football matches:

1. 10th All India Chief Minister's Gold Cup Football Tournament: Sudeva FC Delhi defeated Sikkim Police FC to secure a spot in the semifinals. Kanginsei Touthang of Sudeva FC was named Man of the Match.

2. Constituency Level Men's Football Tournament Final: Poklok-Kamrang triumphed over Chujachen with a 2-0 victory. Poklok-Kamrang’s Nimdup Lepcha was recognized as the best goalkeeper, and Pratab Tamang was awarded for being the highest scorer. Chujachen’s Daneal Lepcha received the Man of the Tournament award, while Poklok-Kamrang’s Pranil Gurung was the Man of the Match. Dzongu Constituency was honored with the Best Fair Play Team award.

The Maghey Sankranti Mela 2025 set the tone for the upcoming golden jubilee celebrations, offering a blend of tradition, culture, and modernity, highlighting the unity and vibrancy of Sikkim.

Narrowcasting program under Atal Vayo Abhyudaya Yojana (AVYAY) completed at Lungzick.

Lungzick, West Sikkim, Gyalshing 12 January 2025– A special narrowcasting program under Atal Vayo Abhyudaya Yojana (AVYAY) was conducted today. The main objective of this program is to inform senior citizens about the services and facilities needed to improve their living standards. The program titled "Our Elders Our Pride" was produced by the Community Radio Association and sponsored by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.

Elderline Helpline Service

During the event, specific information about the Elderline Helpline service was provided. This helpline is available to people aged 60 and above and helps them with their health, legal, and social problems. Elderline is available on the number 14567, where elderly people can avail various services.

Elderline's main objective is to provide information to the elderly for emergency assistance and overall well-being. Through this they are given access to free psychological counselling, healthcare and other social security facilities.

Namper Lepcha Bags 2nd Position in International 21 km Run in Kolkata

Kolkata, January 12, 2025: Seven members of Project Life, a renowned running group from the hills, showcased their exceptional talent and spirit at the 3rd Edition of the Manipal Hospital Shreebhumi Gold Marathon 2025, held at Lake Town, Kolkata. The international event, organized by the Shreebhumi Sporting Club, saw participation from over 9,000 runners from across the globe.

Among the participants, Namper Lepcha, a seasoned runner of Project Life, bagged the 2nd position in the 50+ men’s age category with an impressive official time of 1 hour, 28 minutes, and 10 seconds in the 21 km race.

Mr. Bikram Thapa, the coordinator of Project Life, expressed his pride in the performance of the group, emphasizing that the participation of individuals ranging from 8 to 74 years is a testament to the community’s commitment to promoting fitness across all age groups.

“This event highlights the vision of Project Life—creating a healthier and happier hill community. Such motivational achievements in both local and international events inspire others to embrace an active lifestyle,” said Mr. Thapa.

This milestone adds to the growing legacy of Project Life, reinforcing their dedication to fostering a culture of health and fitness in the hills.

10th Chief Minister's Gold Cup Tournament kicks-off at Jorethang.

Namchi, 9 January (IPR): The first match of the 10th Chief Minister's Gold Cup Tournament kicked-off at football stadium, Jorethang, today. The tournament is hoisted by Namchi District Football Association in association with Sports & Youth Affairs Department, Sikkim Football Association and Maghey Sankranti Mela organising committee.

Mr Raju Basnet, Minister, Sports & Youth Affairs department and Education Department, was seated as the Chief Guest for the event.

Accompanying the Minister were Mr Madan Cintury MLA Zoom-Salghari Constituency and the Chief Patron for Maghey Sankranti Mela, Mr N B Pradhan MLA Melli Constituency, Mr Biren Chandra Rai Advisor SBS, Mr Yougen Tamang Press Secretary to Chief Minister, Mr M T Sherpa Secretary Sports & Youth Affairs Department, Ms Annapurna Alley Secretary IPR Department, Mr Pavitra Manav President NJNP, Mrs Manjari Rai Vice President NJNP, Panchayats NJNP, Ms Monika Rai SDM Jorerthang, Mr Dilip D**g MEO NJNP, Officers from line departments, Members from Sikkim Football Association and Mr Nirmal Chettri, Former Indian Footballer.

The first match was played between ASUFI FA Manipur and Singling Sporting Club, where Singling Sporting Club emerged victorious scoring five goals against the opponent during the penalty shootout.

Earlier, the trophy to be awarded to the winning team was unveiled by the Minister after hoisting the flag for the tournament.

Additionally various cultural performances were also presented during the course of the match.

MISSING PERSON ALERT

Sujan S***a, a 30-year-old resident of Tikpur, Daramdin Constituency, Soreng District, has gone missing since January 1, 2025. He was last seen on December 31, 2024, at around 6:30 pm.

Sujan worked as a caretaker at the "Aaanie Heem" hotel and is a father to a 2-year-old daughter. His disappearance has left his family in a state of distress.

A First Information Report (FIR) has been filed at the Sombaria Police Station on January 3, 2025. The police are investigating the matter and urge anyone with information to come forward.
