A large number of people gathered in Imphal on June 8 for a mass demonstration demanding that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) be updated before the upcoming census process in Manipur.

The protest march was organized by a coalition of 14 civil society organisations operating under the collective platform “14 CSOs Kangleipak”. The procession started from Tiddim Ground in Imphal West and concluded at THAU Ground, where participants also held a public meeting.

The Special Fast-Track Court in Guwahati has begun recording witness testimonies in the case related to the death of Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, marking a new phase in the trial.

Four witnesses have been summoned to depose on the first day, with the court expected to examine four witnesses daily until June 20.

The case stems from Zubeen Garg's death in Singapore on September 19, 2025. Following an investigation by a Special Investigation Team (SIT), the matter was treated as an alleged case of murder and criminal conspiracy.

The investigation led to the arrests of festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta and the singer's former manager Siddharth Sharma in October 2025. Several others, including Amritprabha Mahanta, Shekharjyoti Goswami, Sandipan Garg, Nandeshwar Bora and Paresh Baishya, were also arrested during the probe.

All the accused are currently facing trial before the Fast-Track Court. The witness examination is expected to play a key role as the prosecution begins presenting evidence and testimonies before the court.
