Assam Excise Minister Atul Bora has suspended a newly issued liquor licence near Gauhati University following student protests and local concerns.

The licence, granted for an IMFL ‘On’ outlet at Pandu Sadilapur, Jalukbari—less than a kilometre from the university—faced backlash for its proximity to the campus.

Bora stated on X that although the licence was issued as per Assam Excise Rules, the sensitive nature of the issue prompted him to order a hold on the licence pending further notice.

The outlet, to be run by Kaberi Das as M/S Angel Bar & Restaurant, was approved under Rule 116 of the Assam Excise Rules, 2016.

Student groups, including Gauhati University’s AASU units, have opposed the outlet, citing safety and disruption concerns. Earlier objections from the university to the Deputy Commissioner were reportedly ignored.

The licence remains suspended as the authorities review the matter.
