In Hinduism, Pitru or Pitri Paksha [Sanskrit: पितृ पक्ष] holds a very important ritual, as it is believed to pay homage to ancestors through food offerings. These 16 days period is considered not to be auspicious as the death rite is performed for the ancestors which is known as Shraddh or Tarpana. The Pitri Paksha begins on Sarvapitri Amavasya. Over this period, the sun transits from the northern to the southern hemisphere and as per Hindu tradition, as the southern celestial sphere is considered that to be of the ancestors (Pitru), hence special religious rites are performed during the entire period.

As mortal beings, our desires of achieving the highest despite of all odds and acquiring the finest from amongst almost all existing and even non-existing pleasures has made us surpass the minute phase of humility and generosity. Walking, running and flying fast to attain everything before its fruitful time is somewhat inbuilt within us. We normally tend to turn towards spiritualism during our tough times but, if we are learned about some basic knowledge what our spiritual texts preach, maybe our tough times could be like our best scored exams.

The contemporary subjected dance theatre production ‘AND SHE SPOKE’ is a perfect epitome for various concepts relating to women and her emotions and struggles (both physical + mental). These varied themes unfolded smoothly and aesthetically one after another leaving the spectators to laugh and cry at the recently held concert at the IIC, New Delhi.
AND SHE SPOKE is a production amplifying the voices of women, questioning a deep-rooted patriarchal society and her perception of life.
The work began as an online research laboratory during the COVID lockdown. Isolated boxes on screens became a way of sharing poetry, paintings, experiences, and movement. The sheer power of telling stories propelled into a full-fledged production. This production is deeply immersive, emotional and cathartic, not just to the viewers but also performers. It is aimed at humanity in general whose action and inaction impacts the world. It questions the ways of society, its effect on mental and physiological harmony, and nudges to redo certain actions.
And She Spoke blurs the boundaries of a preset format of Indian traditional dances, its structure and its treatment in execution. Utilizing the diverse backgrounds of each performer in Bharatnatyam as a starting point, the artists with directors, Vaibhav Arekar & Sushant Jadhav are creating work that straddles the traditional and the contemporary. Throwing away our assumptions and preconceptions, we return to the root inquiry: how do stories turn into dance? This, we believe, gives the production its exclusive quality, seamlessly flowing through the idioms of dance & theater. Together, our cohort transcends presuppositions of what Indian dance is and who Indian women artists should be.
