From Brick-and-Mortar to Bestseller

I spent a significant portion of my life working for and creating brick-and-mortar companies. Behind the smokestacks, furnaces, mills, and glitzy offices, there are people—people like you and me.

Books are simply repositories of words. They function like time machines, allowing readers to go back in time or glimpse into the future. Through books, one can imagine any situation—falling in love, committing a crime, becoming a leader, or excelling as a sportsman. Books are truly magical.

However, writing books is easier said than done. One can only imagine the fear and trepidation that a novice writer feels. They may think they know what to write and how to express their ideas, but they often worry:
Is the world ready to listen?
Will people dismiss them?
Will their family look at them strangely?
Will their so-called friends question their mental health?
Such thoughts can make anyone anxious.

How does one start a book?
How does one finish it?
Fortunately, there is no single formula for success.
I felt both excited and apprehensive about the potential pitfalls of this journey into the unknown, my mind swirling with the possibilities of accolades and the more likely criticisms. Why should I write down my thoughts? Are they worth reading? There may be millions out there with similar stories. Ultimately, I decided to proceed simply as a storyteller. Others may take it or leave it. Good or bad, it will be known as my story.

I have prepared many technical project reports, and using a similar approach, I started to create a content outline for my book. However, I found myself stuck on that outline for days. One day, I decided to write down whatever came to my mind. That’s how I completed my first book, “Single Window.” The expert mentoring from my publisher, Zorba Books, was invaluable, as was my firsthand knowledge of the lead character’s experiences.

My second book, “Revelation 22,” was written during the isolating years of the pandemic. In this book, the hero pursues and helps to destroy a group intent on wreaking havoc in a major city.

The third book, “Rich Man, Poor Man,” was written after the pandemic relief efforts. I realized that universal poverty is far more humiliating, dangerous, sinister, and pervasive than even the worst epidemics.
Completing the final chapter and writing the last words provided a tremendous sense of relief—a true catharsis. The deed is done, for whatever it is worth. Somewhere, in glitzy airport shops, air-conditioned malls, obscure second-hand bookstores, or on dusty footpaths, my book may be picked up by a curious reader. The words within may touch their soul and inspire them to think, smile, reflect, remember, and share. That is the true gift that a writer craves; it brings pleasure, happiness, and soul-nourishing satisfaction.
I believe that even if one person finds some relief, direction in life, or consolation from my writing, then my effort is worthwhile.

Success Story of Dr. Anjum Shaikh

Writing EmpowHER: Wellness, Hygiene, and YOU was a journey born out of both discovery and urgency. During my work on EveCare App, I encountered overwhelming statistics that revealed how widespread and neglected women’s health issues really are. I learned that over 500 million women worldwide lack adequate facilities and awareness on managing menstrual health. This reality shook me, underscoring the gap in basic education. The numbers alone were enough to drive me to act.

As I delved deeper, I uncovered equally troubling gaps in other life phases. Nearly 60% of women worldwide feel they lack sufficient knowledge about menopause, a life stage often steeped in silence and stigma. During pregnancy and postpartum, around 40% of women report feeling unprepared for the physical changes they experience, lacking access to information that could help them navigate these critical times. These statistics illuminated the challenges faced by millions of women—challenges often met in silence and isolation.

I wanted EmpowHER to be more than a book; I wanted it to be a companion, a supportive guide, and a call to action. In EmpowHER, I set out to address these overlooked aspects of women’s health, covering critical yet often taboo topics like menstruation, intimate health, pregnancy, postpartum, and menopause. My aim was to break down barriers around these issues and create a safe space for readers, one where body positivity, self-care, and open communication could flourish. The book encourages readers to engage in candid discussions with partners, friends, and healthcare providers, building a supportive community around these deeply personal yet universal experiences.

What has been most transformative for me is the response EmpowHER has received from readers around the world. The outpouring of positive feedback on platforms like Amazon and Goodreads has been overwhelming and heartwarming. I’ve heard from men who have read the book to better understand the experiences of their partners, daughters, and mothers—a perspective I hadn’t anticipated but deeply appreciate. There have been readers who shared that they bought the book as a gift for teenage girls beginning their journey with menstruation, helping them embrace this life stage with knowledge and confidence. Each review, each message, each story is a reminder of why I wrote this book—to make a meaningful impact. Knowing that my words are out there, sparking conversations, and perhaps even prompting readers to take charge of their health and wellness, has been the most fulfilling outcome.
Receiving the “International Impact Book Award” for EmpowHER under the Women Empowerment category has been both an honor and a validation of this journey. This recognition reinforces my belief in the importance of addressing women’s health issues and in the power of sharing knowledge.

Becoming an author has changed my life perspective in profound ways. It has connected me to a community of women who are resilient, brave, and eager to learn. Through EmpowHER, I hope to reach every woman who needs a reminder of her strength, her worth, and the beauty of self-love. Together, I believe we are building a world where women can approach every phase of life with confidence, compassion, and unwavering self-belief.

And finally, a heartfelt thank you to Zorba Books, who believed in this vision from the start. Their support brought EmpowHER to life and helped it find its way to the readers who need it most. Writing this book has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life—a journey that has deepened my purpose and broadened my perspective. My grandmother was not only a treasure trove of stories from Ramayana, Mahabharat, Upanishad and Bhagwat Puran but also an excellent storyteller. She had barely studied in any school. My inquisitive mind always searched for scientific relevance and truth in those stories. This made my grandmother uncomfortable, but she always managed to provide some justification. Those questions remained in my subconscious. The habit of being inquisitive since childhood, helped me later in pursuing my career as a student of physics and as a scientific researcher, contributing original, innovative, fundamental and useful research.

The churnings of my thoughts were expressed in several of the popular articles that I wrote. The topics included some of the most complex and enigmatic subjects such as the concepts of ‘Soul’, ‘Rebirth’, ‘Work’, ‘Law of Karma’, ‘Prana’, ‘Universal Consciousness’, ‘Samudra Manthan-the proverbial churning of the Cosmic Ocean’, ‘Lord Dattatreya’, ‘Ardha-Nari-Nateshwara’, ‘Yogic Samadhi’ etc. are not only based purely on the modern scientific understanding but are sincere effort in providing these concepts a modern scientific basis and re-validate them for the twenty-first century and beyond. While doing so, I do not claim that my interpretations of these ancient concepts are exact, but in the absence of any serious attempts by anyone so far, they feel refreshing, logical and reasonable. Today, we need to look at these enigmatic concepts afresh from a modern scientific perspective without losing their original perspective.

In my pursuit and efforts in contributing something original, Zorba Books has given me a helping hand in not only publishing my writings (Four Books since 2017) but also in reaching out to all those who are eager to know more and more and seek the ultimate truth of their existence. The publicity efforts put in by Zorba Books have exposed my books globally to not only the established scientists but also to the young generation within India. It is very satisfying to learn from several messages I receive that people are gradually reading my books in increasing numbers and recommending them to their children and friends. The figures of consistent sales of these books are indicative of their increasing popularity and acceptance as a new thought by the readers. This is so because my books not only provide new knowledge but also demonstrate how to think in an innovative way, raise pertinent penetrative questions, and look at any research problem in a multidisciplinary way.

Personally, my books have helped me to come into contact with some of the leading personalities from the fields of science, medicine, academics, religion, spirituality and authors, well known for their contribution since decades. There cannot be a better way to serve society than to write good books with chaste honesty, integrity, and genuine concern to create new knowledge and get them published through a reputed publishers for broader dissemination of ideas and knowledge contained therein.
