Rakeysh Mehra on 'Toofaan' OTT release: Film will reach 86mn households

Filmmaker Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra has settled for an OTT release for his new film, "Toofaan", starring Farhan Akhtar. While the filmmaker agrees that the experience of watching a film in a theatre is different, he also feels fortunate that it will cross borders to a larger audience on the same day thanks to the digital premiere.

The sports drama co-starring Mrunal Thakur is themed around boxing.

"We are extremely fortunate to get a world release on the day and date. Normally when an Indian film is released, it goes around the world, we release it in 500 to 600 prints if it's a big film. Here, it is going to 200 countries to 240 territories. It will be seen in 86 million households. They will have to choose to see it but there is a possibility of your work crossing the border," says the filmmaker.

Mehra, whose earlier films have always had a theatrical release, believes that the film has the capability to engage the audience.

"In terms of the experience, yes, it will be a completely different experience. When you see it in the theatre, it's a captive audience, but when you are at home and watching it with your family, the remote is always in your hand. You can pause or skip the channel. It becomes very important that you grab the audience in a way that they become captive even if they watch it on a smaller screen," he says.

Mehra adds: "I hope this will happen. Whatever little screenings we have had in a limited way, people have not moved out of their seats for even a glass of water. Besides the experience of watching it, I don't think there is any other difference." The film's trailer was out recently and Mehra doesn't wish to focus on expectations.

"You can't tie yourself up in knots thinking about the expectations. You have to prepare hard. You have to understand the story you are telling and then become like the vehicle to tell that story through all characters and all other departments. All of us have come together to tell that story and it should feel like that in terms of acting style, shooting style, action, drama, all department -- whether it is makeup or wardrobe. They should not stand out like a sore thumb and at the same time they should not become like any other film because each individual is different and each person is unique," he says.

Talking about the challenges in making of the film, which will release he says: "The most challenging thing was that everyone stays in character and there is never a false note, and as far as possible the wish was that they become their characters and not play them. Deep down the requirement of this story is that when the audience watches it, they should see Ananya (Mrunal), to see themselves in Ajju (Farhan) and Nana Prabhu (Paresh Rawal). The film is very high on dramatic portions, the idea of romance and sone pe suhaga there is boxing," he sums up about his film, which drops on Amazon Prime Video.

'Superman', 'Lethal Weapon' director Richard Donner dies

Veteran filmmaker Richard Donner, known for directing blockbuster and classic films such as "Superman", "The Goonies" and "Lethal Weapon" franchise, has died. He was 91.

Donner passed away on Monday, his producer-wife Lauren Schuler Donner told Deadline. However, she did not reveal the cause of his death.

Donner, whose real name was Richard Donald Schwartzberg, was born in New York to Jewish parents in 1931.

Early in his career, Donner had aspired to be an actor but found his calling in direction.

His early work included directing episodes of television shows such as “The Rifleman", "The Twilight Zone", "The Man from U.N.C.L.E.", "Gilligan's Island", and "Perry Mason".

Donner made his feature directorial debut with "X-15" in 1961 but his big breakthrough came 15 years later when he directed the horror movie "The Omen" in 1976.

Starring Gregory Peck, David Warner and Lee Remick, the film was a major box office hit and got nominated for two Oscars, eventually taking home one.

He found further acclaim when he directed 1978's "Superman", starring Chrisptoher Reeve as the Man of Steel along with Margot Kidder, Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman and Ned Beatty.

The Warner Bros blockbuster was made on a whopping USD 55 million budget and ultimately grossed more than USD 300 million at the global box office.

The first movie tentpole based on a superhero comic character, "Superman" also got nominated for three Academy Awards. It won a special Academy Award for its visual effects.

Despite the overwhelming success of "Superman", Donner was fired from the film's sequel due to his disputes with producers. Richard Lester took over, though much of Donner's work remains in the finished film.

In 2006, "Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut" was released on DVD the same day that Bryan Singer's franchise reboot “Superman Returns” debuted on home video.

Donner was also known for directing the 1985 adventure comedy "The Goonies".

Based on a story by filmmaker Steven Spielberg and written by Chris Columbus, "The Goonies" was a surprise hit and achieved cult status over the years.

In the 1980s, Donner also started the blockbuster action franchise "Lethal Weapon", featuring rising Hollywood stars Mel Gibson and Danny Glover.

Donner directed all four of the "Lethal Weapon" movies in an 11-year span. The movies grossed more than USD 900 million globally.

Donner and Gibson also teamed up for "Maverick" (1994) and "Conspiracy Theory" in 1997.

His directing credits also include the 1988 Christmas movie "Scrooged", the drama "Inside Moves" and 1992's coming-of-age drama "Radio Flyer".

In the wake of the news of Donner's death, prominent Hollywood personalities, including Spielberg, Gibson and "The Goonies" star Sean Astin paid their tributes.

In a statement, Spielberg said, "Dick had such a powerful command of his movies, and was so gifted across so many genres. Being in his circle was akin to hanging out with your favourite coach, smartest professor, fiercest motivator, most endearing friend, staunchest ally, and — of course — the greatest Goonie of all." "He was all kid. All heart. All the time. I can't believe he's gone, but his husky, hearty laugh will stay with me always," he wrote.

Gibson, in a statement to Deadline, remembered Donner as his "friend" and "mentor", who taught him many things in life.

"He undercut his own talent and greatness with a huge chunk of humility referring to himself as 'merely a traffic cop'. He left his ego at the door and required that of others. He was magnanimous of heart and soul, which he liberally gave to all who knew him.

"If we piled up all the good deeds he did, it would stretch to some uncharted place in the firmament. I will sorely miss him, with all his mischievous wit and wisdom," Gibson said.

Astin wrote on Twitter that Donner had the "biggest, boomiest voice" one could imagine.

"He commanded attention and he laughed like no man has ever laughed before. Dick was so much fun. What I perceived in him, as a 12-year-old kid, is that he cared. I love how much he cared," he added.

Actor-filmmaker Ben Stiller remembered Donner as someone who "made big-time movies".

"Movies that remain in our consciousness. That never has been and never is easy. Always admired his work," he added.

Filmmaker James Mangold tweeted, "James Mangold wrote, “To my mind this word captures the first priority and goal of a film director, regardless of genre or style. And Dick Donner achieved it time and time again, in all sorts of films. It's not easy. It takes artistry. RIP Richard Donner." Filmmaker Edgar Wright noted that the audiences remember their favourite characters from "Superman", "Lethal Weapon" and "The Goonies" because Donner "knew how to capture that magic onscreen".

"I only met Richard once and he was funny, charming and so full of stories (and happy to indulge my geeky questions). I'm sad I'll never get to meet him again. RIP," he added.

Donner was married to Lauren Shuler Donner. The couple's production company The Donners' Company was known for backing hits like " X-Men" and "X-Men Origins: Wolverine". PTI

Richa Chadha’s initiative KINDry is a social media platform to share stories of hope

In the troubled times, it’s hard news that gets amplified – the issues, the threats, the failure of the system. What actor Richa Chadha has decided to do is to be the voice of people who showed what humanity is. For every death due to the want of oxygen, there was a person who selflessly went beyond the call of duty, to extend a helping hand.

KINDry is a social media initiative that aims to amplify the real heroes in the Covid times. “While we all were shaken by the sight of bodies floating in the Ganga and people gasping for oxygen, we also saw stories of courage, kindness and empathy. Those people chose to act selflessly and help those in need. While political news or that of death and destruction gets prominently displayed, such inspiring stories get buried somewhere in newspapers,” says Richa.

KINDry is neither a news portal nor an NGO, but a social media initiative to spread such stories of hope.

Richa pours over newspapers to find and fete such superheroes. “Each day, I get bowled over by these amazing stories,” admits Richa. She mentions Madusudan Patra, a 75- year-old farmer from Odisha who rode a bike for 300 km to hand over some money to a family. The sole earner of a family had gone missing from a Covid facility in Cuttack and Patra found about it and went all the way to just hand over money and rode back. “Imagine a 75-year-old man riding a bike for 10 long hours to help a family in need.”

Then there is Javed Khan from Bhopal, who turned his auto rickshaw into a free oxygen ambulance for Covid patients. And there is Dattatraya Sawant from Ghatkopar East in Mumbai, a part-time English teacher, who started a free auto service for those in need of an ambulance.

“Helping someone is not always easy, sometimes your personal, professional commitments leave little time or energy to do anything. But these are the people who chose to rise to the occasion and serve selflessly.”

Not just featuring these inspiring stories, KINDry has also become the space, where people are sharing their stories of kindness and artistes coming together to offer respite with their music and art. Her partner Ali Fazal is also a part of these initiatives to amplify kindness, “It’s a community effort to bring us all together,” says Richa.

Her upcoming projects include Fukrey 3, a web show called Candy, and a film, Abhi Toh Party Shuru Hui Hai, with Anubhav Sinha. Inside Edge 3 is due to release soon.

Also on the cards is the wedding with Ali Fazal, but that seems a little far away. “At least till our families get the second dose of vaccine,” she says. She is planning a live session with Khalsa Aid founder Ravi Singh for KINDry. “Punjabis are helpful. The situation in Punjab was way better than it was in UP or MP. People like Ravi Singh, Sonu Sood have led from the front!” —TNS

Police use water cannon, teargas to disperse BJYM activists trying to lay siege to Amarinder’s house

The police on Monday lobbed teargas shells and used water cannon to disperse BJYM activists trying to lay siege to the official residence of Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh here over his alleged failure to curb drug menace in the state.

Leaders and several activists of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) - the youth wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) – were detained by the police.

Protesters led by BJYM's Punjab chief Bhanu Pratap Rana raised slogans against the Congress-led dispensation and alleged that the chief minister had “failed” to wipe out drug menace from Punjab.

Chandigarh Police had deployed police personnel and put up barricades to prevent the BJYM activists from heading towards the chief minister's residence.

But when the protesters tried to force their way through the barricades, police used water cannon to disperse them at Sector 17 here. Police also used teargas shells to stop the protesters.

Earlier, talking to the media, Rana slammed the Amarinder Singh-led government in Punjab for “not being able to curb the drug trade in the state which has flourished under the Congress rule”.

He said before coming to power in 2017, Amarinder had promised to wipe out drug menace from the state.

But he has completely “failed” in doing so. In fact, drug trade had “flourished in the state”, Rana claimed. PTI

CBSE announces special assessment scheme for Classes X, XII after pandemic disruption

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Monday announced a special assessment scheme for class 10 and 12 board exams for next year in view of the COVID-19 pandemic, splitting the academic session into two terms.

The board has also announced plans to rationalise the syllabus for 2021-22 academic session and to make the internal assessment and project work more "credible" and "valid".

As per an official order by Joseph Emmanuel, Director (Academic), CBSE, the term one exams will be held in November-December, 2021 while the second term exams will be conducted in March-April, 2022.

"The syllabus for the academic session 2021-22 will be divided into two terms by following a systematic approach by looking into the interconnectivity of concepts and topics by the Subject Experts," he said.

"The Board will conduct examinations at the end of each term on the basis of the bifurcated syllabus. This has been done to increase the probability of having a board conducted classes X and XII examinations at the end of the academic session," he said.

The syllabus for the board examination 2021-22 will be rationalised similar to that of the last academic session to be notified in July 2021.

Schools will also use alternative academic calendar and inputs from the NCERT on transacting the curriculum.

"Efforts will be made to make internal assessment, practical, project work more credible and valid as per the guidelines and moderation policy to be announced by the board to ensure fair distribution of marks," he added.

The plans by the board come against the backdrop of COVID-19 pandemic which forced the cancellation of board exams of some subjects last year and complete cancellation of board exams this year. PTI

In Himachal Pradesh, 99.7% clear Class X

Over 99 per cent of students passed the Class X exam, the result of which was declared by the Himachal Pradesh Board of School Education (HPBSE) today.

A press release issued by HPBSE chairman SK Soni said 99.7 per cent of 1,16,784 students — 88,556 from government schools and 28,228 from private schools — passed the exam.

This comes after the board cancelled the exams this year because of the Covid-19 pandemic, and instead used internal assessment to promote students to the next class. Students could appear for only one exam — Hindi — in person before the state government cancelled the rest.

“Objective criteria have been adopted for promoting and giving marks to the students,” he said, adding that the results were better this year because the government had decided to promote all students. — TNS

Punjab beats MP in wheat procurement

A record 433.24 lakh metric tonne (LMT) of wheat has been procured in the rabi marketing season 2021-22, surpassing the previous high of 389.93 LMT in 2020-21, the Centre today said.

Food Corporation of India CMD Atish Chandra said the highest procurement (132.10 LMT wheat) was from Punjab. Last year, Madhya Pradesh topped the list. Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh and J&K have recorded their “best ever” procurement so far, Chandra added.

With 132.10 LMT wheat procured from Punjab, the state regained the lead position, overtaking Madhya Pradesh (128.08 LMT). In the 2020-21 rabi season, MP topped the list (129.42 LMT) followed by Punjab (127.14 LMT).

An all-time high MSP of Rs 84,369.19 crore was directly transferred into the accounts of 49,16,424 farmers across the country under the ‘One Nation, One MSP, One DBT’ scheme. A record 49.16 lakh farmers benefited against 43.35 lakh last year, Food Secretary Sudhanshu Pandey said. According to the FCI CMD, Rs 26,103.89 crore was paid to 8,85,117 farmers in Punjab and Rs 16,706.33 crore to 7,60,636 farmers in Haryana, the two states leading the agitation against the three farm laws. It was the first time that farmers in the two states received remuneration for grain directly in their accounts.

Amid the expected issues related to bumper procurement and storage management, Chandra said: “The preparations for extra storage were made in advance based on procurement targets. Some unscientific storage is due to huge volumes of procurement. Currently, only 17.91 LMT grain is under unscientific storage.”

Supreme Court refuses to allow Rath Yatra across Odisha, except at Puri

The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to allow Rath Yatra across Odisha, except at Puri Jagannath temple in view of the Covid pandemic.

"You want to pray to God. You can do it from home. I also wanted to go to Puri but I couldn't in the last one and half years. This isn't the time," said a Bench led by CJI NV Ramana while refusing to permit Rath Yatras in Baripada, Sasang and other parts of the state.

The Odisha Government has permitted Rath Yatra only at Puri even as it allowed rituals within temple premises of all other Jagannath temples across the state.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta suggested that Rath Yatras could be allowed by limiting the number of participants with certain restrictions.

"We hope God will allow us these rituals next year," the CJI said dismissing all the pleas in this regard.

The Odisha Government maintained that it was impossible to ensure adherence to strict Covid protocol in thousands of Jagannath temples across the state where lakhs of devotees gather to take part in religion processions.

Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut justifies suspension of 12 Maharashtra BJP MLAs

A day after 12 BJP MLAs were suspended from the Maharashtra Assembly for alleged misbehaviour, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut said indiscipline could not be tolerated, even as the opposition party held protests in the Vidhan Bhavan complex here and other parts of the state over the action.

Talking to reporters here on Tuesday, Raut said, "Never before the state legislature witnessed such indiscipline."

The opening day of the state legislature's two-day monsoon session on Monday witnessed high drama as 12 BJP MLAs were suspended from the Assembly for one year after the state government accused them of "misbehaving" with presiding officer Bhaskar Jadhav in the Speaker's chamber.

Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Devendra Fadnavis had termed the allegation as false and said Jadhav's account of the incident was "one-sided".

On Tuesday, Raut said, "Indiscipline cannot be tolerated. Breaking the Speaker's mike and using abusive language against the presiding officer is not Maharashtra's culture."

Meanwhile, the BJP held protests in different parts of the state, condemning the MVA government's action against the opposition party's MLAs.

Several BJP legislators squatted on the stairs of the Vidhan Bhavan building in Mumbai and shouted slogans against the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA-comprising the Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress) government.

The 12 MLAs against whom the action was taken were not seen as they are not allowed to enter the legislature building during the suspension period.

The 12 suspended members are Sanjay Kute, Ashish Shelar, Abhimanyu Pawar, Girish Mahajan, Atul Bhatkhalkar, Parag Alavani, Harish Pimpale, Yogesh Sagar, Jay Kumar Rawat, Narayan Kuche, Ram Satpute and Bunty Bhangdia.

On Monday, these 12 MLAs met Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari, seeking his intervention, and complained against the MVA government for "trampling upon the democracy". PTI

Capt Amarinder Singh heads to Delhi for meeting with Congress president Sonia Gandhi amid infighting in state unit

Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh left Chandigarh to meet Congress president Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi on Tuesday, days after former Cabinet Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu’s long meeting with party leaders Priyanka Vadra Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.

The top leadership is expected to share with the Chief Minister the formula worked out to ensure he and Sidhu are on the same page. The high command is also likelyto discuss the progress made regarding the 18-point agenda handed over to Captain a few days ago as well as the caste matrix to recast the Pradesh Congress.

It could not be ascertained whether Rahul Gandhi, who has been meeting party leaders from Punjab, would be present at the meeting. It may be mentioned that Punjab affairs in-charge and AICC general secretary Harish Rawat had said that Sidhu would be given a crucial role to ensure the party retained power in the state. Sources did not rule out discussions on the CM face for the crucial 2022 Assembly elections.
