Follow Up | Rangpo Acc*dent

A tragic bus acc*dent near Rangpo in Sikkim claimed the lives of five people and left 15 others injured today. The acc*dent occurred when the bus, en route to Gangtok, reportedly lost control on a sharp turn and plunged into a gorge. Eyewitnesses suggest that the vehicle was overspeeding, although the exact cause of the accident is yet to be confirmed.

Local authorities, along with rescue teams, reached the scene promptly and transported the injured to the nearest hospital for treatment. The condition of some injured passengers is reported to be critical.

A special Award Function and Felicitation Program

Samdong, 19th October 2024: Today, a special Award Function and Felicitation Program was successfully conducted by Kalpataru Pratisthan with the invaluable support of Suresh K. Lama, social activist and Vice Chairman of Citizens Urban Cooperative Bank Limited, Majitar Rangpo. The event was graced by KVJ Dr. Sumithra Prasad, a life skill counselor, vocational trainer, and advocacy activist with over three decades of experience in the development sector. Dr. Prasad, a Special Mother of a 33-year-old son from Dorai Foundation in Chennai, participated as the special resource person for the event.

The event was attended by various dignitaries, including the Zilla Adhyaksha from Gangtok District, well wishers, and the Kalpataru Pratisthan family. Distinguished guests included Om Prakash Sapkota, Tek Bahadur Chettri, Nidup Lepcha, Dawa Madam, Kushal Narayan Khatiwada, Dol Nath Khanal, Dadi Ram Nepal, Thakur Prasad Sharma, Ganga Prasad Bhattarai, Dr. Indu Nepal, Bhawani Khanal, Rikesh Pradhan, Narendra Adhikari, Arpana Sharma, Prerna Sharma, and parents of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) including Ghana Devi Sharma, Krishna Khatiwada, and Deepa Sharma.

The program began with the General Secretary of Kalpataru Pratisthan, Ganga Prasad Bhattarai, providing an introduction and details about the NGO’s activities. This was followed by Dr. Sumithra Prasad introducing Dorai Foundation and sharing her experiences in working with PwDs across India. Dr. Indu Nepal gave an update on the current activities of Kalpataru Pratisthan, and O.P. Sapkota President of Kalpataru Pratisthan, spoke about the financial challenges and the ground realities faced by the NGO.

During the program, Dr. Prasad shared several future plans for Kalpataru Pratisthan, which included:

Establishing an ADLS classroom, kitchen (home science room), and counseling center

Creating a Toy Library and launching an Income Generation Program (IGP) for mothers

Providing Caregiver Training to mothers

Introducing Activity-Based Learning for PwDs, such as making and selling salads, engaging in horticulture, and participating in art, craft, and food preparation activities.

As part of the ceremony, Dr. Sumithra Prasad felicitated five parents of PwDs with table mats made by the SAI Centre and presented the Exemplar Award and a citation certificate to Om Prakash Sapkota, the President of Kalpataru Pratisthan. Additionally, she honored Dr. Indu Nepal with a do-salla on behalf of Dorai Foundation.

The event concluded with an interactive session with the PwD parents, followed by a vote of thanks from Ganga Prasad Bhattarai, General Secretary of Kalpataru Pratisthan.

This inspiring event reflects the shared commitment to improving the lives of persons with disabilities and their families.

Marathon Girl of Sikkim, Phurba Tamang, Clinches Victory at Kolkata Marathon

Kolkata, 4th February 2024– Phurba Tamang, widely recognized as the "Marathon Girl of Sikkim," emerged triumphant at the Kolkata Full Marathon, crossing the finish line with an impressive time of 3 hours, 23 minutes, and 39 seconds for the challenging 42.2-kilometer distance. The event witnessed stiff competition, with Phurba surpassing seasoned marathoners Anvita Verma and Tamali Basu from Bihar and Delhi, respectively.

Participated by a staggering twenty thousand runners, the Kolkata Full Marathon showcased Phurba's exceptional endurance and determination. In a remarkable achievement, Phurba has now conquered eight elite marathon events across India within a span of just two years, consistently securing a podium finish in each competition.

Phurba Tamang's prowess in marathon running has not only earned her individual accolades but has also led to her appointment as the Race Ambassador for Sikkim Sarathi Run and SMIT Run in the state. Her commitment to the sport and outstanding achievements serve as an inspiration to aspiring athletes and reflect the spirit of perseverance ingrained in the Marathon Girl of Sikkim.

Federation of Consumers Association of Sikkim Commemorates National Consumer Day 2023

Gangtok, Sikkim – 24th. December. 2023

The Federation of Consumers Association of Sikkim (FCAS), in collaboration with the Department of Food & Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Government of Sikkim, marked National Consumer Day 2023 at the Conference Hall of 7 Mirrors Hotel, Sichey, Gangtok, Sikkim.

Distinguished speaker Shri Vivek Thapa addressed the audience on the crucial intersection of Artificial Intelligence and the protection of Consumer Rights, while Shri Santosh Dahal shed light on consumer rights within the banking sector. FCAS Vice President, Smt Srijana Kadka, imparted insights into basic consumer rights.

In recognition of outstanding support to the flood victims of Sikkim, FCAS felicitated the Dirty Angels Motorcycle Club, Bikash Thapa (Chairman, Stars of Hope NGO), Basant Pradhan (Coach, Sikkim Running Group), and Krishna Chettri (President, Shantinagar Gaon Sudhar Samiti, Singtam).

Representatives from fifteen NGOs in Gangtok and Pakyong districts actively participated in the event. Special guest Amisha Kami, a student from Singtam Government Senior Secondary School, captivated the audience with patriotic songs.

President of FCAS, Shri Suresh K. Lama, urged participants to elevate consumer rights awareness across the state in collaboration with FCAS. He expressed gratitude to all NGOs for their enthusiastic participation. Chief Guest Chungkela Lepcha, Councillor of Gangtok Municipal Corporation, commended FCAS for its effective program initiative.

Special guests General Secretary Hemant Tamang and DB Moktan from Gaon Uddhar Samiti Middle Lingding Rai Gaon added grace to the occasion. Chief Coordinator (State) Rinzing Tamang hosted the program, concluding with a vote of thanks delivered by Vice President Kesang Pakhrin.
