Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna .

The present painting depicting Joseph's dream was probably reated during Mengs's Florentine period and came directly into the possession of the grand duke Pietro Leopoldo Grand Duke of Tuscany.
In Rome Mengs had renewed his study of the works of Michelangelo , and Joseph's posture is clearly adopted from the Master's Jerome in the Sistine Chapel.

Maternal Affection 1775
Oil on copper
National Gallery London

In this exquisite small painting on copper, three women are looking after two infants in a grand neoclassical setting. One woman breastfeeds an infant, while another holds up a second baby for a kiss. A woman to the left is busy arranging bedding in a wooden cradle. The open loggia and warm light suggest that the scene takes place in a southern climate. To an eighteenth-century audience, the women’s clothing would have been understood as antique Roman dress.
The painting shares similarities with a series of eight paintings by Lagrenée at Stourhead in Wiltshire. It may be Lagrenée’s painting formerly at Stourhead, described as ‘Maternal Affection – a beautiful group’. The subject was of special interest for a contemporary audience as motherhood, and particularly the practice of breastfeeding one’s own children rather than sending them out to a wet nurse, was much discussed in both France and England at the time.

Io, Ἰώ, watched over by Argos on Hera's orders

The 2nd century AD geographer Pausanias writes that Io is the daughter of Inachus.

He mentions that Zeus has fallen in love with Io, accompanied by the legendary wrath of Hera, and the metamorphosis by which Io becomes a beautiful white heifer.

The Death of Orpheus

According to the myth sone Thracian female followers of Dionysus enchanted by his music and enraged by his rejection, tore him to pieces with their bare hands during one of the orgiastic Dionysian mysteries.

In another version of the story, the women killed Orpheus because he only acknowledged Apollo as his god.

The Bath Of Aphrodite - Ἀφροδίτη

Aphrodite is usually said to have been born near her chief center of worship, Paphos, on the island of Cyprus, which is why she is sometimes called "Cyprian", especially in the poetic works of Sappho.

The Sanctuary of Aphrodite Paphia, marking her birthplace, was a place of pilgrimage in the ancient world for centuries.

Zeus and Hera on Mount Ida

Crete's Mount Ida is the island's highest summit, sacred to the Goddess Rhea.

There lies the legendary Idaean cave (Ἰδαίον ἅντρον)), in which baby Zeus was concealed from his father Cronus.

It is one of a number of caves believed to have been the birthplace or hiding place of Zeus.

Aphrodite and Adonis

Orphic Hymn to Aphrodite ( #55)

Heavenly, smiling Aphrodite, praised in many hymns,
sea-born, revered goddess of generation, you like the nightlong revel
and you couple lovers at night, O scheming mother of Necessity.
Everything comes from you; you have yoked the world,
and you control all three realms. You give birth to all,
to everything in heaven, upon the fruitful earth
and in the depths of the sea, O venerable companion of Bacchos.
You delight in festivities, O bridelike mother of the Erotes,
O Persuasion whose joy is in the bed of love, secretive, giver of grace,
visible and invisible, lovely-tressed daughter of a noble father,
bridal feast companion of the gods, sceptered she-wolf,
beloved and man-loving giver of birth and of life,
with your maddening love-charms you yoke mortals
and the many races of beasts to unbridled passion.
Come, O goddess born in Cyprus, whether you are on Olympos,
O queen, exulting in the beauty of your face,
or you wander in Syria, country of fine frankincense,
or, yet, driving your golden chariot in the plain,
you lord it over Egypt’s fertile river bed.
Come, whether you ride your swan-drawn chariot over the sea’s billows,
joying in the creatures of the deep as they dance in circles,
or you delight in the company of the dark-faced nymphs on land,
(as, light-footed, they frisk over the sandy beaches).
Come, lady, even if you are in Cyprus that cherishes you,
where fair maidens and chaste nymphs throughout the year
sing of you, O blessed one, and of immortal, pure Adonis.
Come, O beautiful and comely goddess;
I summon you with holy words and pious soul.

Odysseus and Calypso

“The lovely Calypso bathed him and dressed him in scented clothes, and watched him set out. The goddess had placed a skin filled with dark wine on board, and a larger one of water, and a bag of provisions, full of many good things to content his heart, and she sent a fine breeze, warm and gentle…”

Return From The Grape Harvest

In Hesiod and in Homer's Odyssey we find some of the earliest mentions of straw wine production: laying out freshly harvested grapes on mats to dry nearly to raisins before pressing.

A wine made on Le**os known as protropon was among the first known to be made exclusively from "free-run juice," drawn from grape clusters expressing their contents under their own weight.

Other Greek innovations include the harvest of deliberately unripe grapes in producing a more acidic wine for blending.

The boiling of grape must was discovered as another means of adding sweetness to the wine.

The Greeks believed wine could also be improved by adding resin, herbs, spice, seawater, brine, oil and perfume.

Aphrodite and Eros

One of the first authors to mention Eros, 700 B.C., was Hesiod, who described him in “Theogony” as one of the primeval cosmogonic deities born of the world egg.

But later accounts of the lineage of Eros vary, describing him as the son of Nyx and Erebus; or Aphrodite and Ares; or Iris and Zephyrus; or even Aphrodite and Zeus—who would have been both his father and grandfather.
