Since the latter half of the 19th century, Goa has played a vital role as a central point of departure for a significant migration flow to the east coast of Africa. This migration has brought noteworthy contributions to politics, economics, and music. In this presentation, we will delve into the transoceanic relationships forged by Goans between their homeland, India, and the countries of Mozambique and Tanzania in East Africa. These intercontinental connections facilitated the exchange of knowledge, skills, and cultural values and gave rise to an enduring musical affinity that resonates today.
This research is part of the Liber|Sound project of Aveiro University, Portugal, dedicated to connecting the archives of shellac discs in Goa, Mozambique, Brazil, and Portugal and the political, aesthetic, and social importance of the repertoire they safeguard.
