Pasumai Community Radio effectively organized, performed three main significant functions at the grass root level for environmental protection and social development. Firstly, it promotes issues of environmental resources, agriculture, gender equality, education, trade and commerce, disaster, weather, natural calamities, poverty and social problems. Secondly, it enhances the capacities of local people to work together to tackle a range of environment and social problems, including solid waste management, climate change awareness and conservation of bio-diversity. Lastly, it contributes to nurturing of the creative talents of the community and providing a forum for a diversity of opinions and information.
The programmes are aired 18 hours a day. Beginning with music and devotional songs Local musical programmes are interwoven with other recreational programmes, as the listeners to FM station are addicted to music. Short verbal presentations are given on child labour, consumer awareness, domestic and migrant labour. A good governance, guidance for employment, programmes on the latest developments in electronics, information technologies are broadcasted for youth and college student.
Special programmes are offered for housewives on village festivals, recipes, and beauty tips, house-keeping, house-building, etc., Lessons on organic farming, health and hygiene, HIV/AIDS, are presented as the environmental programmes to listeners. Reviews of recently published Tamil books, presentation of poems and short stories, traditions and heritage of Tamil are popular programme. Children’s programmes of stories songs, comedies, features and information covering notable local, provincial, state-level, national and international events were also regularly aired.
The information generated by listeners locally is equally complimented by information carefully collected from books, magazines, newspapers and selected Tamil websites. Telephone conversation ropes in 100 listeners a day. SMS are received during presentations cleverly done by young announcers who are students of Peace Industrial School and various colleges in the coverage area. Apart from these regular programmes, 300 special programmes were aired over the radio during the first year of operation. Music from other Indian languages of Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, are also aired as to encourage national and cultural integration.
