2024: GOVERNOR AIYEDATIWA OFFICIALLY DECLARES AMBITION

- Boroffice, Ekungba, Iji, Segun Ojo, other APC elders rally support for Governor

The Governor of Ondo State, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, on Tuesday, officially declared his intention to contest in the forthcoming November 2024 gubernatorial election in the state under the umbrella of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Governor made the declaration during a meeting with stakeholders of the APC drawn from the 18 local government areas of the State at the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Arcade ground in Akure.

Governor Aiyedatiwa had earlier visited the State Secretariat of APC in Akure where he also made his intention known to the State Working Committee of the party led by the State Chairman, Engr. Ade Adetimehin.

He said: “Leaders and members of our great party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, it is with regard that I come before you today to humbly and officially express my interest and intention to seek the nomination of our great party to contest for the office of Governor of Ondo State.

"I offer myself, in difference to your popular yearnings and upon wide consultations, not just to run the race, but to be the candidate of our great party in the 2024 gubernatorial election.

"As I begin today this journey to secure, next month, our party's ticket for the November Governorship Election, I ask you to support me and let us build an APC that respects and promotes members, an APC that cares. Support me to build an Ondo State that works."

Addressing a crowd of party faithfuls, stakeholders and citizens, Governor Aiyedatiwa hailed the occasion as another milestone in the democratic journey of Ondo State, emphasizing the importance of consolidating governance and celebrating the vibrancy of democracy under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC.

Acknowledging the unwavering support of party members, the Governor expressed gratitude for their commitment to the progress of Ondo State.

Recounting the achievements of his administration, Governor Aiyedatiwa highlighted the strides made in infrastructure, education, healthcare, industrialization, security, and workers welfare, promising to build on the foundation already laid.

He paid tribute to the late former Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, SAN, CON, whose vision and partnership laid the foundation for the state's development.

“He chose me as the deputy governorship candidate to contest the 2020 governorship election, and we won. We won because he was a good man, loved and respected by the people. His yes was his yes, his no was his no. He did not pretend nor played to the gallery. He did not like hypocrisy, sycophancy and backbiting.

“He stood for merit and candour. He loved the State and its people. He picked me as Deputy Governor not just because he loved me but because he had a vision for the young to grow. He wanted integrity, humility, confidence and loyalty to be the character of government. He made no pretence of his plan and desire for succession.

“He was deliberate and prophetic. He said it during our inauguration and repeatedly that “Lucky will succeed me. Lucky will carry on the work after me". At not one, not two nor three sessions of the Cabinet meetings had he pronounced Lucky as his desired choice to carry the flag after him.

“He was a man of vision. We will not let him down. We will not waiver. We will not falter. We will succeed. Support me to carry on the work. Work with me to bring the desired goal”, the Governor said.

Recounting the administration's initiatives aimed at improving the lives of citizens, Governor Aiyedatiwa highlighted measures such as salary arrears payment, healthcare workforce expansion, infrastructure development projects, and support for education and agriculture sectors.

Highlighting his vision for Ondo State, Governor Aiyedatiwa outlined a comprehensive development agenda aimed at addressing key issues such as poverty alleviation, economic growth, healthcare improvement, infrastructure development, and education enhancement. He emphasized the importance of sustainable governance and vowed to respect the people's aspirations for continued progress.

During his welcome address, the Secretary to the Government, Hon. Tayo Oluwatuyi, commended the Governor for his determination to run in the November 2024 Gubernatorial election, expressing confidence that the people of the State would wholeheartedly support him.

Also in his goodwill message , Rt. Hon. Olamide Oladiji, Speaker, Ondo State House of Assembly, said: “On behalf of the State House of Assembly, I extend our heartfelt congratulations to you as you declare your intention to contest the upcoming gubernatorial election. Your dedication and commitment to serving the people of our state are commendable, and we are confident that your leadership will continue to bring progress and prosperity to Ondo State.”

Earlier in the day, Governor Aiyedatiwa had received resounding support and endorsement for his ambition from elders of the APC from across the 18 local government areas of the State.

The elders commended the Governor for the recognition he has given them with the engagement and promised to give him their support and prayers.

Chief Olushola Iji, former ambassador to Togo, said: "I'm deeply moved by the Governor's emotional appeal to the elders of the party. His humility in seeking our support signifies his readiness for leadership. With his remarkable achievements in such a short time, I urge us to throw our support behind him."

Prof. Robert Ajayi Boroface, former Deputy Senate Leader, in his remark, said “Ondo state is blessed with abundant resources, and Governor Aiyedatiwa embodies the leadership needed to harness these resources for the state's greatness. I pledge my full support to him and believe that with our collective efforts, success is assured."

In the same vein, Chief Jamiu Ekungba, Acting Chairman of the APC Elders Caucus, said: "We are not just leaders; we are elders. The Governor has assured us of recognition in his administration. We have been with him during his tenure as deputy governor, and now we pledge our unwavering support to him. I urge fellow elders to continue our collaborative efforts at the local government level."

Also speaking, Chief Segun Ojo said: "We will spare no effort to ensure the Governor's victory in the upcoming election. Our prayers for his deputy governorship in 2020 were answered, signifying divine grace from God on him.”

Another elder, Baba Fapounda, said: "In the past, elders were often overlooked, but Governor Aiyedatiwa has given us the recognition we deserve. I decree success and blessings into his life."

ONDO 2024: Ondo Assembly Turmoil: Speaker Faces Impeachment Over Aiyedatiwa's Alleged Endorsement

Tensions have flared in the Ondo State House of Assembly as 13 out of 26 members have denounced Speaker Rt. Hon. Olamide Olajide's unilateral endorsement of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for the upcoming 2024 gubernatorial election. This move has prompted the legislators to pass a vote of no confidence in the Speaker, citing breaches of parliamentary protocols and the integrity of the House.

In a formal resolution released by the dissident lawmakers, they vehemently denied any collective decision to support Aiyedatiwa's candidacy and rebuked the Speaker's unauthorized public declaration. The lawmakers emphasized that the House operates on democratic principles, requiring due process and consultation before endorsing any gubernatorial aspirant.

The resolution underscored several key points:

1. Lack of Deliberation: The lawmakers clarified that the House had not deliberated on the gubernatorial aspirations of any candidate and had not reached a consensus to support Aiyedatiwa or any other aspirant.

2. Unauthorized Representation: The Speaker's purported endorsement on behalf of the House was deemed unauthorized and misleading, lacking both moral and legal authority without explicit consent from members.

3. Disrepute and Controversy: The Speaker's unilateral declaration was criticized for misrepresenting the House, sparking needless controversies, and undermining the confidence of members in his leadership.

As a result, the dissenting legislators passed a vote of no confidence in Speaker Olajide's leadership, signaling a significant rift within the Assembly. However, they reaffirmed their commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring transparent decision-making processes that serve the best interests of the people of Ondo State.

The resolution was signed by prominent members of the Assembly, including the Majority Leader, Parliamentary Secretary, Chief Whip, and Minority Leader, among others. Their collective action reflects a unified stance against unilateral decisions and underscores the importance of democratic principles and parliamentary integrity in governance.

Below is the full text of their resolution;

ONDO STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY SPEAKER’S DISRESPECT FOR THE INDEPENDENCE AND INTEGRITY OF THE HOUSE IN HIS ENDORSEMENT POLITICS.

The Ondo State House of Assembly wishes to categorically state that it has not passed any resolution to endorse the incumbent Governor of Ondo State, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, as purportedly announced by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Olamide Oladiji.

The House of Assembly operates on democratic principles, and would formally take a collective decision, follow due process and the relevant laws governing the State where it wishes to take any decision regarding the endorsement of a gubernatorial candidate

As Honourable members of the 10th Ondo State House of Assembly, we were shocked and disappointed to hear the public declaration made by the Honourable Speaker of the House, Rt Hon. Olamide Oladiji, to the extent that the Ondo State House of Assembly has agreed to support the governorship ambition of Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa.

The said declaration by Mr. Speaker is untrue, misleading, un-parliamentary, and, to say the least, ridiculous.

We therefore wish to inform the good people of Ondo State at home and in the diaspora that:

At no point did the Ondo State House of Assembly deliberate the governorship ambition of any of the numerous aspirants that have indicated their interests to contest for the State’s 2024 Governorship Election, let alone agree to support any particular aspirant.

Mr. Speaker lacks the moral and legal authorities to speak or pledge support for any governorship aspirant on behalf of the House without the explicit consent of members.

Mr. Speaker has, by his unconventional and false public declaration, misrepresented the honourable House, and in so doing, brought the 10th Ondo State House of Assembly into disrepute, needless controversies and breached our confidence in his leadership.

Consequently, we hereby pass a vote of no-confidence in the leadership of the Speaker, Rt Hon Olamide Oladiji.

The House of Assembly however reaffirms its commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that all decisions taken are transparent enough and are in the best interest of the people of Ondo State.

Gumi Urges Tinubu to Pursue Dialogue with Bandits, Rejects Buhari's Approach

Renowned Kaduna-based Muslim cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has called on the government to permit him to engage in dialogue with the bandits responsible for the recent abduction of 287 schoolchildren from Kuriga Government Secondary and LEA Primary Schools in Kaduna State. Gumi emphasized the importance of dialogue as a means to resolve the crisis and urged President Bola Tinubu to adopt a different approach from his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari, who had rejected negotiations with bandits.

The abduction, which saw armed assailants storming the Kuriga area of the Chikun Local Government Area in Kaduna State, marked yet another tragic incident in Nigeria's ongoing security challenges. The attack occurred just after insurgents kidnapped 200 internally displaced women in Borno State, underscoring the urgent need for effective intervention.

Despite the government's reluctance to engage in dialogue with the bandits, Gumi asserted that negotiation was essential for securing the release of the abducted schoolchildren and addressing similar cases. He cited past successful negotiations, such as the release of passengers abducted on the Abuja–Kaduna train in 2022, as evidence of the efficacy of dialogue.

Expressing his readiness to facilitate discussions between the government and bandits, Gumi emphasized the religious duty to pursue peace through dialogue. He urged the Tinubu administration to heed his call for dialogue, contrasting it with Buhari's approach, which had eschewed negotiations.

Gumi's advocacy for dialogue with bandits stems from his previous involvement in negotiating the release of abducted individuals on behalf of state governments. Despite facing criticism, Gumi maintains that dialogue offers a viable path to resolving the ongoing security crisis and securing the release of abducted persons across the country.

Clark and Osoba Advocate for Shift to Parliamentary System of Government

Elder statesman Chief Edwin Clark and former Ogun State Governor Chief Olusegun Osoba have thrown their weight behind a proposed constitutional amendment to transition Nigeria from a presidential to a parliamentary system of governance.

The move comes as 60 members of the House of Representatives, led by Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda, introduced bills seeking constitutional alterations to implement the shift during a recent session.

China, during a meeting with Clark at his Abuja residence, emphasized the need for a more accountable and cost-effective system of governance. He criticized the current presidential system as cumbersome and highlighted the importance of elected officials being directly accountable to the people. Clark welcomed the initiative, stressing the urgency of restructuring Nigeria for its continued existence.

Similarly, Osoba, after a closed-door meeting with the lawmakers, echoed support for the parliamentary system, citing its economic efficiency and emphasis on local governance. He emphasized the need to devolve power to address diverse cultural and security challenges effectively.

The proposed shift has garnered support beyond political circles. Kano elder statesman and business mogul Alhaji Aminu Dantata also endorsed the parliamentary system, citing its cost-effectiveness and potential to enhance stability in Nigeria.

The advocates argue that transitioning to a parliamentary system would not only reduce the financial burden on the government but also promote effective governance tailored to Nigeria's diverse cultural landscape. As discussions around constitutional amendments continue, the push for parliamentary governance gains momentum, with hopes of charting a more efficient and responsive political course for the nation.

LACO-FS Red Beret, Not a Trademark of Cultism

Lucky Aiyedatiwa Campaign Organisation Foot Soldiers (LACO-FS) is a peaceful, mainstream campaign organisation for the Ondo State Governor, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Ayedatiwa, and has never been in anyway associated with thuggery, brigandage, or anything untoward.

Joyfully, our team has been campaigning across the state among our party members in the All Progressives Congress (APC) in preparation for the governorship primary election coming up next month.

It is, however, benumbing coming across grave expressions on the social media, especially through some twitter handles (now rebranded as X), that our group is bringing cultism to Ondo State for the simple reason that we don red berets to our campaign rallies.

While those bandying the insinuations of thuggery or cultism have bombarded the net with their tar brushes, they fail woefully to prove any instance of violence in our activities, and find it hard to produce any pictorial or camera evidence of where Aiyedatiwa supporters under the aegis of LACO-FS are armed with any weapon at all, much less a dangerous one.

Certainly, such critics are only full of bile and are consumed by their giddy belicosity, in envy of the unstoppable love that the people of Ondo State have for Governor Aiyedatiwa. In simple logic of semantics, a foot soldier stands for a committed supporter in readiness to work with loyalty and dedication, which we indeed stand for, in our support for the election of Aiyedatiwa come next November.

Doomdayers and naysayers should produce proof when alleging violence; otherwise, they should keep silence and watch from the sidelines, as we march on in this show of love for a dedicated Governor whom the people of Ondo State want, for the next term of four years.

Therefore, LACO-FS comes in peace.

PRESS STATEMENT

RE: OWO, OSE APC LEADERS ENDORSE AIYEDATIWA

We have been inundated with phone calls and text messages regarding a news story with the above headline, claiming that leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Owo and Ose have unanimously endorsed Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa as the party's candidate ahead of the forthcoming primary election.

The unique standing of our ancient towns of Owo and Ose, and considering that our late respected leader, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, CON, was a son of Owo with a fervent following, the alleged endorsement has become a contentious topic amongst our townsfolk, the state, and the nation at large.

We are, therefore, constrained to quell the spreading of this disinformation, and halt this falsehood from gaining further traction within the public domain. Succinctly we assert that the report claiming APC leaders in Owo and Ose have endorsed Aiyedatiwa is both egregiously fallacious and patently deceptive and misleading.

The event that transpired in Owo was, in fact, a gathering of those loyal to Aiyedatiwa, convened at the Oba Olateru Olagbegi Civic Centre for a political meeting, as evidenced by the attendees. The assemblage included Deputy Governor Olayide Oyelami, former Chief of Staff Gbenga Ale, and Femi Idris, all of whom have since aligned with Governor Aiyedatiwa's camp. Also, Hon. Olayemi Adeyemi, the coordinator for the Aiyedatiwa faction in Owo, was present.

This group has previously opposed Aketi’s interest in the state. Chief Gbenga Ale has been with Aiyedatiwa before our late Governor passed away. Similarly, Mr. Femi Idris’s defection to Aiyedatiwa's faction was motivated by personal interest, including securing his wife the promotion at the Local Government and maintaining his position as the Chairman of the Local Government Service Commission.

Should there ever be a genuine consensus to endorse a candidate within the Owo and Ose APC chapters, it would be championed by our renowned and steadfast leaders, whose political acumen is well recognized. Such a meeting would necessitate the presence of influential personalities like; Member representing Owo/Ose Federal Constituency, Hon. Timehin Adelegbe; Member of the House of Assembly representing Owo Constituency 1, Hon. Oluwole Ogunmolasuyi; Member representing Owo Constituency 2, Hon. Morenike Witherspoon; former Special Adviser to the late Governor on Union Matters and Special Duties, Mr. Dare Aragbaiye; former Commissioner for Infrastructure, Lands, and Housing under the late Akeredolu, Engr. Raimi Aminu; son of the late Governor, Babajide Akeredolu; Pastor Akin Olotu; former Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mr. Oyato Aribo; member of the Federal Character Commission, Chief Olufemi Omosanya; Chairman of the defunct ANPP, Chief Yinusa Adeola; Chief Tola Awoh; among other stalwarts of the party.

Footage retrieved from the event highlights the local government party chairman's refusal to publicly endorse Aiyedatiwa, which led to an obvious awkward situation. This unfolding spectacle is as amusing as it is troubling. We remain vigilant of Aiyedatiwa's escalating desperation and his campaign's attempts to manufacture endorsements across the state.

Our resolve is firm in Owo and Ose, and within the broader APC family, to not let misrepresentations prevail. The loyalists of the late Governor Akeredolu's leadership in Owo and across the state stand united in their rejection of Aiyedatiwa's tactics to secure the party's nomination. It is well documented that Aiyedatiwa's treatment of the late Governor was profoundly inhumane and deeply callous.

We refuse to honour such betrayal and cruelty with our party's endorsement. As we await guidance from our revered leader and father, President Bola Tinubu, we are committed to exposing the deceit and mendacity of Aiyedatiwa and his cohort of betrayers.

Signed:

Laide Bakare Faces Backlash for Comment on Portable’s Birthday Post

Nollywood actress Laide Bakare found herself at the center of controversy after her comment on singer Portable's birthday post sparked outrage among fans and followers.

The singer, known for his outspoken nature, celebrated his 30th birthday with stylish photos shared on his Instagram page, donning traditional Agbada attire. In his heartfelt caption, he expressed gratitude for the gift of life, personal growth, and embracing his unique identity. He wished for his new age to be filled with love, laughter, and joyful moments.

However, Bakare's response to Portable's post drew criticism, particularly due to her previous comments about him in a recent interview. Using a laughing emoji, Bakare's comment appeared to be mocking or dismissive, igniting a wave of backlash from fans.

Commenters like Tunaz Kid, Adetutu Longe, Chineye Bae Headache, and Dimzzy voiced their disapproval, with some questioning Bakare's motives and maturity. Tunaz Kid expressed confusion over why Bakare was receiving criticism, while Adetutu Longe warned her against potential repercussions if Portable were to retaliate. Chineye Bae Headache called out Bakare for her apparent insensitivity, labeling her as immature, while Dimzzy sarcastically questioned if Bakare was seeking attention or conflict.

The incident highlights the intense scrutiny celebrities face on social media and serves as a reminder of the potential consequences of seemingly innocuous comments in the public eye. As the backlash continues, Bakare may need to address the situation to mitigate further damage to her reputation.

Anthony Joshua Returns to Training, Targets Summer Showdown

Former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua wasted no time returning to training just two days after delivering a brutal knockout blow to Francis Ngannou in their ‘Knockout Chaos’ bout on Friday, March 8. Joshua showcased his dominance by dropping the former UFC heavyweight champion three times in two rounds, culminating in a dramatic finish with a powerful right hand.

While the boxing world eagerly anticipates the upcoming bout between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk on May 18, Joshua has already set his sights on his next challenge. With Fury and Usyk likely tied up in an immediate rematch, Joshua is determined not to sit idle and has his eyes fixed on a summer return to the ring.

Speaking to iFL TV, Joshua revealed his tentative plans, stating, “Whether it will be in the UK, who knows? But maybe June, June/July.”

The landscape of the heavyweight division could undergo significant changes depending on the outcomes of upcoming fights. If Fury or Usyk are stripped of their IBF title due to the rematch clause, Joshua, as the number one contender, could find himself in line to challenge for the belt against interim champion Filip Hrgovic.

Despite initially signing on to face Deontay Wilder, Joshua’s plans shifted after Wilder’s unexpected defeat to Joseph Parker in December. Parker's subsequent victory over Zhilei Zhang at the ‘Knockout Chaos’ event further solidified his standing as a potential opponent for Joshua’s next bout.

Considering his options, Joshua expressed interest in facing any of the three heavyweights: “Wilder, Zhang, Parker. All of them. Let’s go!”

As the heavyweight division gears up for a summer showdown, Joshua's return to training signals his readiness to reclaim his status at the pinnacle of the sport.
