Nothing could be more devastating for a family to have all its kids affected with a life-threatening disability. It was painful to meet one such family in Koppal district of Karnataka where the three kids Krishna, Praveen and Sachin are affected with muscular dystrophy, a symptom that causes muscles to deteriorate and the child loses the ability to do things like walk, sit upright, breathe easily, and move the arms and hands. This increasing weakness can lead to other health problems.

Thanks to SAMARTHYA (SAMUHA’s Disability Resource Group) and the community support, children got early intervention treatment and are provided with wheelchairs but the struggle and pain for the kids and family
is never-ending.

Koppal district is one of the worst affected areas with the disability. It is devastating to see the impacts of disability in the kids of almost every family. Insufficient nutrition, water contaminated with fluoride and age-old traditions like endogamy are the primary contributing factors for disability. Low family income and poor medical facilities in the region makes it even more difficult for families.
