United Nations: The World's Most Expensive Keepsake?

Every year on United Nations Day, we raise a toast to an institution created for peace—but is it the ultimate paperweight? With ongoing crises, the UN often appears more like a spectator in the game of international relations. Take the Russia-Ukraine conflict; as NATO stands firm with Ukraine, the UN seems content to issue statements from the sidelines, contributing more to the noise than to the solution.

Let’s not forget the Middle East! The plight of the Palestinian people continues as the UN’s response mimics a broken record. And while Africa battles its share of turmoil, the UN’s influence barely registers—a whisper drowned in the chaos.

The US invasion of Iraq is a painful reminder of the UN’s failed opportunity. Despite passing Resolution 1441, the UN did nothing as powerful nations went ahead without additional authorization. Millions of Iraqis have suffered, and we now face the rise of groups like ISIS.

If the UN craves respect, it must reform its Security Council, implement independent peacekeeping forces, and prioritize humanitarian needs. Can it regain relevance or will it remain the world's most expensive keepsake?
