About the Fundraise
Churachandpur Hill District is situated in the South-Western part of the North-Eastern state of Manipur. As per the 2011 Census, the population is 2,74,143. In terms of medical infrastructure, the District Hospital (DH) has 236 beds with 20 beds (including ICU and HDUs for critical care) earmarked for the treatment of Covid+ patients.
The DH has 14-D Type Cylinders and 5-B Type Cylinders, which have to be refilled at the Central Medical Store situated in the state capital, Imphal. The distance between Churachandpur District and Imphal is 60kms+ and the Turn Around Time (‘TAT’) between transporting the oxygen cylinder, standing in the queue for refilling to refilling, and coming back to the DH every day is over 6 1/2 hours. Further, there is no dedicated pick-up truck or vehicle to transport the cylinders to and fro from Imphal, which is readily available for the use of the hospital authorities.
As on the latest data from COVID-19 Status Report, IDSP, Chief Medical Officer, Churachandpur, on 8th of May, 2021, the total COVID positive case stands at 2477, with 230 active cases, 52 deaths, and 31 new cases in the last 24 hours.
Further, out of the 20 beds available, 19 are occupied and require constant oxygen support - The daily (on a 24-hour cycle) oxygen consumption is 97,920 lbs. To put into perspective, for a total population of over 2.7 lakhs, there are oxygenated beds available for 20 patients.
There are 7 ventilators and no oxygen plant nor pipeline facilities. No fees are charged to patients. They buy their own medicines mostly as the supply of medicine isn't adequate
To compound the extremely low number of oxygenated and ventilator hospital beds, there is not only an acute funding crunch but also a severe scarcity of those essential medicines mentioned in the ICMR issued Covid treatment and management protocols, and protective equipment for healthcare workers including N95 masks and PPE kits.
The referral centers in Imphal at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) and J.N Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) are full most of the time.
We have been informed by doctors that a lot of people are hiding their symptoms and not going for medical tests for fear of being thrown out of their rented houses or for fear of being stigmatized.
With very limited capacity to respond to the onslaught of COVID-19 second-wave, Churachandpur is sitting on a dangerous borderline where any spike in the number of critical cases can result in a complete breakdown of the health system.
Moreover, a number of the staff engaged in this fight against COVID-19 are contractual staff. From nurses to ambulance drivers, even as they risk their lives, they are grossly underpaid and work overtime with no extra incentives.
To keep us safe. To keep everyone safe.
The fund raised here will go towards
* Supporting frontline workers including setting up a community kitchen to provide hot meals.
* Mobilizing trained volunteers to assist the health workers in logistics – procurement of and transportation of oxygen cylinders, medical supplies, disposal of bio-medical wastes.
* Purchasing oxygen cylinders, oxygen concentrators and oximeters to strengthen emergency response and monitoring
* Provide safety gear for frontline workers such as N95 masks, PPE kits.
Our district hospital, which is the sole centre for critical care of COVID+ patients for a population of 300,000 people, doesn't have a single ambulance. We are also exploring agencies/funders/CSR/faith-based organisations/foundations on how to provide one ambulance with basic life support (BLS) system. The budget for a BLS ambulance is around twelve lakh rupees (Rs 12,00,000).
The fund raised through this campaign will be administered by the Churachandpur COVID-19 Response Support Team.
Your kind contribution will help strengthen our district’s fight against COVID-19 and provide support to our heroes – frontline workers.
