Infosys co-founder Kris Gopalakrishnan is among 18 booked under the SC/ST Atrocities Act
The complainant who belongs to the Bovi community (scheduled caste), was a faculty member at the Centre for Sustainable Technology at the Indian Institute of Science. Gopalakrishnan serves as a member of the IISc Board of Trustees.

The Sadashivanagar police have registered a case against Infosys co-founder Senapathy Kris Gopalakrishnan and 17 members of the Indian Institute of Science under the SC/ST Act based on a private complaint filed by a faculty member accusing them of dismissing him from service through a fake honey trap case and subjecting him to casteist abuse.

The complainant, Professor D. Sanna Durgappa, formerly with Centre for Sustainable Technologies, had approached the 71st city civil and session court. The court directed the jurisdictional police to register a case and investigate the matter. The case was registered on January 27.

The complainant, Durgappa, who belongs to the Bovi community (scheduled caste), was a faculty member at the Centre for Sustainable Technology at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc).

According to the complaint, the accused used a fake honey trap case to dismiss him from service in 2014. He further alleged that he was subjected to casteist abuse and threats.

The accused in this case include Govindan Rangarajan, Sridhar Warrier, Sandya Vishwswaraih, Hari K V S, Dasappa, Balaram P, Hemalata Mhishi, Chattopadyaya K, Pradeep D Sawkar, and Manoharan.

There was no response from the IISc faculty or from Kris Gopalakrishnan, who serves as an IISc Board of Trustees member.

Police shouldn't serve Notice of Appearance under Section 41A CrPC / Section 35 BNSS through WhatsApp or Electronic Means: Supreme Court – 27.01.2025.


The Supreme Court has directed that police should not serve notice for appearance to the accused/suspect as per Section 41A of the Code of Criminal Procedure (Section 35 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita) through WhatsApp or other electronic modes.

The Court made it amply clear that the service of notice through WhatsApp or other electronic modes cannot be considered or recognised as an alternative or substitute to the mode of service recognised and prescribed under the CrPC, 1973/BNSS, 2023.

The Court also directed those notices under Section 160 of CrPC/Section 179 of BNSS, 2023 and Section 175 of CrPC/Section 195 of BNSS to the accused persons or otherwise can be issued only through the mode of service as prescribed under the CrPC/BNSS.

In this backdrop, the Court issued the following directions :

a) All the States/UTs must issue a Standing Order to their respective Police machinery to issue notices under Section 41-A of CrPC, 1973/Section 35 of BNSS, 2023 only through the mode of service as prescribed under the CrPC, 1973/BNSS, 2023. It is made amply clear that service of notice through WhatsApp or other electronic modes cannot be considered or recognised as an alternative or substitute to the mode of service recognised and prescribed under the CrPC, 1973/BNSS, 2023.

b) All the States/UTs while issuing Standing Orders to their respective Police machinery relating to Section 41-A of CrPC, 1973/Section 35 of BNSS, 2023 must be issued strictly in accordance with the guidelines issued by the Delhi High Court in Rakesh Kumar v. Vijayanta Arya (DCP) & Ors., 2021 SCC Online Del 5629 and Amandeep Singh Johar v. State (NCT Delhi), 2018 SCC Online Del 13448, both of which were upheld by this Court in Satender Kumar Antil v. CBI & Anr. (2022) 10 SCC 51.

c) All the States/UTs must issue an additional Standing Order to their respective Police machinery to issue notices under Section 160 of CrPC, 1973/Section 179 of BNSS, 2023 and Section 175 of CrPC, 1973/Section 195 of BNSS, 2023 to the accused persons or otherwise, only through the mode of service as prescribed under the CrPC, 1973/BNSS, 2023.
